Next Week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:00 UK time, Friday, 18 September 2009

cash.jpgIt's been a fantastic week of themes with a great response across the board. I'm hoping that as many of you are tempted by this week's offerings. As always you can leave suggestions on the blog, by email or on the Get It On Facebook page.
We've got one or two things planned over the coming weeks which I hope will enhance the show - look out next week for the themes on video! I'm off to make-up....

Monday:
Norrie suggests songs featuring children singing for tonight's theme. That could mean the groups of kids on Another Brick In The Wall or Circus Games or maybe the stars who can't resist putting their cute kids on the album. Let's hope I can get through the show without There's No one Quite Like Grandma...

Tuesday:
It's cheery Tuesday on GIO as we focus on songs about mortality. When I'm Dead And Gone or Tomorrow Never Comes? Almost everything on Johnny Cash's last album would qualify including his version of We'll Meet Again. Until I heard him sing it I never really thought of it as a song about the afterlife. Don't think of this a morbid show, I reckon we could get some of our most interesting suggestions yet...

Wednesday:
When you've got friends and neighbours all the world is a happier place. Or so the songs says. Tonight's show celebrates your best buddies and the folk who live next door. Living Next Door to Alice or Lean On Me? You decide...

Thursday:
It's opposites for tonight's show. That means two suggestions from each of you along the lines of Don't Go vs Please Stay, Mr Blue Sky vs Grey Day or Running Up That Hill vs Into The Valley.

    Tuesday Mortality

Loads and loads of tracks I could suggest, but there's only one that I really, really want to hear and share with the GiO listeners:
    Billy Bragg -
Whenever I hear it, I hear two perspectives - as a father and as a son.

Anyone who only knows Billy as a purveyor of political polemic will be blown away by this moving meditation.

    Monday: The Bairns

Bryan Ferry's son Otis, is credited with 'whip' on 'Cruel'. It can be heard at the end as he cracks the whip on the backbeat.

Scotch-git, norriemaclean, thank you for the kind words. I felt like the invisible man for a while there. Is there a knack to this? I find myself wondering if email is a better option. Let's see if we get one played this week.

which reminded me of what I think is Springsteen's best song since Darkness

Long Walk Ö÷²¥´óÐã - Bruce Springsteen

both of which fit for Wed even if Bruce was using neighbourhood imagery for a wider political point. Brilliant song.

  • Comment number 41.

Bryan, I've stuck a copy of the Lincoln City unreleased track Catherina in the post to you today; it would be lovely to hear it played on the radio for the first time on Tuesday when the theme is mortality. The song is about a Scottish GI bride who died young from cancer. But no mention of the D word in the lyrics. The tune has an early Simon and Garfunkel vibe to it. First public performance is in Edinburgh next month. You read it here first. Lincoln City might just be the best band ever to come out of Scotland.

Some suggestions for Tuesday's show as a fan of Deacon Blue / Ricky Ross /McIntosh Ross. Ricky's "Pale Rider" album from 2005 dealt with mortality in a few songs; the great atmospheric title track and the closing song "In The End" which was written in memory of Deacon Blue's late guitarist Graeme Kelling. Deacon Blue songs dealing with death and mortality: Riches (b-side to the first Dignity single back in 1987); Goodnight Jamsie and I Will See You Tomorrow (from Fellow Hoodlums). Another couple of great B-sides in the shape of Golden Bells and Indigo Sky also deal with the theme of mortality. And, look out for the subtle plug coming, the new McIntosh Ross album due out on 28th September has a song "Winter Is Coming" where Lorraine has said it's about celebrating the fact they are looking forward to growing old and celebrating their best years may be behind them, and Lorraine has also written a song on the album called "This World Is Not My Ö÷²¥´óÐã"... also worth a spin is the b-side to the new single - Summer. The lyrics seem to be about coming home from a funeral and not wanting to carry on after someone close has died but the music is full of life and is strangely uplifting.

I could throw in a couple of hard to get hold of Larry Norman recordings too... "The Road That Leads To Ö÷²¥´óÐã" which was recorded with just Larry on guitar singing in a hospital ward a year or two after he had a quadruple bypass which saved his life and a year or two before he finally succumbed to all his health problems with his heart condition. One of his last released recordings was "Lost Unto This World" which was an Emmylou Harris cover i think.

No one suggesting Clair / Gilbert O'Sullivan tonight? (She's heard giggling at the end) Not politically correct in an age when kids can't sit on Santas Knee, Lollipop men can't hold a child's hand crossing the road and you can't take photos of your own kids in a school play?

    I have a dream, Abba
One day, Bjork (baby gurgles at the start)

And I know there's still about 95 shopping days to go but it fits with the theme...

Bryan - The Wall is not about the Berlin Wall! It's a metaphor for isolation and self-protectiveness from emotion and others' ridicule, ending up at supreme callousness, and built from life events such as early death of Father, experience of WWII, mother's over-protectiveness, bullying schoolteachers, unfaithful wife etc.

Instead of playing with Shaker Maker tomorrow, why not sit down and listen to it, end to end?

    More for THURSDAY:

'Heat Treatment' - Graham Parker v 'Night Nurse' - UB40 (well, it's a cold cure innit!).

'Answer Me' - Barbara Dickson v 'Don't Speak' - No Doubt.

'Nervous Wreck' - Radio Stars v 'Harder Faster Better Stronger' - Daft Punk.

'Let Me Down Easy' - Bettye LaVette v 'It Was Easier To Hurt Her' - Wayne Fontana.

'Love That Girl' - Raphael Saadiq v 'She Hates Me' - Puddle of Mudd (would have to be a radio edit though).

'I Will Always Love You' - Dolly Parton v 'I Never Really Loved You Anyway' - The Corrs.

'Down In Mexico' - The Coasters v 'North to Alaska' - Johnny Horton.

I know it's a repeated theme but it's such a good one that I can feel a few more lists coming on.

Bryan, we raised a few glasses to Sir Bobby this evening. Will you dedicate something to him on Tuesday? Whatever you feel is appropriate. Thank yee.

    TUESDAY:

'The Passing Show' - Ian Dury and the Blockheads (this is a great track which I've asked for quite a few times...a poignant song about mortality given the expert Blockheads treatment...really funky...from the album 'Mr Love Pants')

'I Want My Baby Back' - Jimmy Cross (teenage death record parody..."Oh Baby I Dig You So Much"...ugh!)

    'Here In heaven' - Sparks

This is Stevie, DC's Welsh Wales Brother-in-law nickin a shot on his computer (don't tell him)

Tuesday show: "Patches" by Clarence Carter which is possibly the most corny song ever written!

Patches ah'm dipendin on ya son....

Hellish but hilarious. The word "schmaltz" was invented with that song in mind.

Here's DC coming back so better go....

Captain, I can understand BB making the connection with the Berlin Wall because of Roger Waters' show that was done in Germany in the early 90's which explicitly suggested that it could be about the falling of the Berlin Wall specifically and the lowering of barriers more generally.

I think at one point they also show some of the wall being demolished as part of the show.

#87. Silly me...don't think UB40 did a version of 'Night Nurse'. Better make it Gregory Isaacs or Simply Red.

Well, if you're going to use the 1990 Berlin Wall as a visual aid, then it'd be impolitic not to use it as a secondary metaphor, but that's what it is - very much secondary.

Agreed. However it's not unlikely at all that a non-hardcore, non-paid up member of the Floyd Appreciation Society would make that mistake. Bryan likes to keep it country, remember? :-)

OK - Tuesday is the day you HAVE to play the Grateful Dead. There is no choice...if the theme is mortality. Most GD songs are long and/or about tragic themes so here are some relatively short and upbeat songs that I think the passengers aboard the good ship Get it On might like.

    Cassidy
    Cosmic Charley
    Sugar Magnolia
    Mr. Charlie
    Tennessee Jed
    West L.A. Fadeaway
    Uncle John's Band

    Cheers y'all

    TUESDAY - DEATH

    Lenny Bruce - Bob Dylan,

Dylan in fine voice with a great melody about the life and death of the American comedian. Some of the lines in the song have an excellent black comedy quality about them.

    Hello.

For Tuesday was going to suggest Leader of the Pack. Looking at the blog I see it's already been requested. Are The Shangri-La's the best band with the fewest plays on the radio? Their back catalogue of singles is tremendous.

Instead I'm going for Death Disco by Public Image Limited. Can't see this making the show as the single got zero airplay at the time of it's release.

From 'Metal Box' - undoubtedley the best album of the 1980's.

    Cheers.

    LLIM.

    Tuesday: Mortality

Can't help but echo CaptRamius (#20), and JimFraeErskine (#22) – Billy Braggs 'Tank Park Salute' simply says it all...

    A few more suggestions though...

A Most Peculiar Man: Simon and Garfunkel
The Last of the Hobo KIngs: Mary Gauthier
But I May Die Tonight: Cat Stevens
    Now I'm Easy: Eric Bogle
Come Back to Me: Big Country
