Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 17:11 UK time, Sunday, 28 February 2010

It was an exciting night on Friday's Get It On as I had thought it would be great idea to get you to come up with next week's themes and submit them during the show. I thought that perhaps we might get five or six really strong ideas and get them down to the final four. Wrong! We were inundated with good and really creative ideas for future themes. Myself and the team will be going through them all properly this week and you can hear some of them on air in the coming months.
In the meantime here's the four we have gone with for this week.
animals_2.jpg
Monday
Ross from Larkhall's idea is one happy song followed by a sad song. " An emotional roller-coaster of a show" said Ross. I don't want to ask for ideas in advance as I think it would be better to do it 'live' on Monday night when you have had the chance to hear the preceding song. We will of course be checking the blog/Facebook etc throughout the show. Feel free to suggest one to get us started though...

Tuesday
First time ever I saw this theme I knew it was going to be a nice one. First attraction is the theme which has been suggested by Paul Handley. Looking forward to seeing the romantic side of our bloggers...

Wednesday

Get It On goes on safari tonight because, Kira who is 10 has suggested 'animals' as a theme.

Thursday
Anne in Plean chooses the final theme of the week. 'Which ringtone would you assign to your loved ones and why?" Maybe best if your partners/bosses/mother in laws are not listening!

    Monday

Laughing Blues - Bonzo Dog Band
    Both are happy and sad
Here Comes My Baby - The Tremeloes

It's all subjective. Some happy songs are depressing (Agadoo) and some sad songs are hilarious (Old Shep)

    Tuesday

Do Wah Diddy Diddy - Manfred Mann - Instant mutual attraction over three chords

    Wednesday

Gorilla You're A Desperado - Warren Zevon - At the zoo, keep your car keys in a safe place.

    Thursday

You Were Meant For Me - Gene Kelly - This song from Singin' In The Rain coincidentally uses the same notes as the Nokia ringtone, itself based on a Spanish composition from 1902.

    Monday
D:ream - Things Can Only Get Better
Yazz - The Only Way Is Up
    happy and sad?

    Tuesday/ Wednesday
    The Monkees - I'm a believer

    Wednesday
Yello - Great Mission a whole jungle full of animals in there
Survivor - The Eye of the Tiger
    no wonder he's hitting those
The Beatles - I am the Walrus

  • Comment number 3.

damn - forgot to add in for Wednesday - the cat in the hat Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity. one for the blog.

  • Comment number 4.

Don't know if it's the tilt of the theme but I've went for songs about being happy or sad (rather than ones that evoke those emotions) and in most cases, obvious in the title

    MONDAY;

    doubles

Sad Sad World ~ If It Makes You Happy - Sheryl Crowe
Happy ~ Disappointed - Public Image Limited
I COULD Be Happy ~ Happy Birthday - Altered Images
Glad To Be Unhappy ~ Sometimes I'm Happy - Billie Holliday

    other happy songs

    Happy Birthday - Stevie Wonder
    Happy - Travis
    Everybody's Happy Nowadays - Buzzcocks

    other sad songs

Sentimental and Melancholy - Billie Holliday
Sad Songs and Waltzes - Willie Nelson
I Just Can't Be Happy - The Damned
Superstar - The Carpenters (...loneliness, is such a sad affair...)

Bet i ken 2 happy songs Henri'll ask for :D

  • Comment number 5.

Further proof of the vox pop tendency - don't blog in advance for Monday's show - except the opening number - bit of a disadvantage for the blogotariat leaving work etc...

Glen is right, it depends on how you hear it.Therefore, I think the opening number should be both happy and sad and 2nd the suggestion of 'Here Comes My Baby' by The Tremeloes although there is a digital remake that is a huge improvement on the original - which was very badly recorded, particularly the bass.

Another song which has a really upbeat happy disposition but is accompanied by a truly miserable lyric is 'The Happening' by the Supremes.

#4 good on you, erlando - what did you have in mind?.

    #2/3

good to see you back in the blogosphere, thought you'd left us on Friday.

Not being able to contribute in advance for Monday is a pain - I've got lots to suggest, but will they be disregarded because, like Friday, we can't start until 6:11 on Monday?

Although blog tracks were played on Friday, they were prior submitted, which doesn't make me feel confident about Monday's outcome.

    regardez youse

One was your antidote to "Sunshine on Leith" and the other was a track by a band your young lady got you into as you've mentioned before.

That reminds me were you at the "Magic of Motown" show on Friday night? Lots of folk up dancing in the aisles and in front of their seats, one was an older guy with younger woman and i thought, hmm could be Henri ;)

I agree about the Monday night thing. Can't quite see what difference the previous track'll make to what you'd suggest for the next but, hey ho. I'll be at work so wont be able to participate, maybe something'll catch BBs eye for an opening track, perhaps

    - Glad to be Unhappy - as it mentions both sides in one title

    Monday:

    Happy Jack - The Who

Your Smiling face - James Taylor
Tears of a Clown - Isley Brothers

Hi how about "Old Shep by Elvis Presley, which would bring a tear to a glass eye.Followed by"Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves,a real happy song, It would also be a good one for Tuesday as it sum`s up my girl friend Belinda and how I felt when I saw her for the first time after a gap of 25 years. We are of skiing to Glencoe Monday so will be listening in the car on the way home. All the best keep up the good work Scott Ruthven.

After receiving forgiveness of biblical proportions (on the previous thread), the "prodigal" would like to humbly suggest the following for...

    MONDAY - HAPPY & SAD

Oh Happy Day - Bobby Womack, never could work out the lyrics on this one but I think it is pretty uplifting.

Sentimental Friend - Hermans's Hermits, haven't heard this since the 60s, maybe because it is just too sad! Good tune tho'.

Ok Mr PH here's my contribution for your theme on tuesday.

    Fantasising.....
I remember standing on the corner at midnight
Trying to get my courage up
There was this long lovely dancer in a little club downtown
I loved to watch her do her stuff
Through the long lonely nights she filled my sleep
Her body softly swaying to that smoky beat
    Mainstreet / Bob Seger

    losing control
When I saw you standing there
I about fell off my chair
When you moved your mouth to speak
I felt the blood go to my feet
I'd Love You to Want Me / Lobo

    out of my league
    'Cause she's so high...
High above me, she's so lovely
    She's so high...
Like Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, or Aphrodite
She's so High / Tal Bachman

    trying to resist
Just one touch, just one look
    A dangerous dance
One small word can make me feel
    Like running away
You can't say you're in it, no, until you reach the limit
I've been in love before / Cutting Crew

    ah telt ye
I was the only one who
    Offered to carry your books
Took all the stares and laughter
    With the dirty looks
    But I saw then
    What they see now
    Ö÷²¥´óÐãly Girl / The Chi-Lites

    Brilliant themes this week!

    Monday

    Kinks - Better Things

    Springsteen - Better Days

  • Comment number 26.

    For opening song I mean.

  • Comment number 27.

    TUESDAY:

THE TRAMMPS - 'ZING WENT THE STRINGS OF MY HEART'.

  • Comment number 28.

A great opening song for Monday if it is to be both happy and sad would be

Don't Give Up - Peter Gabrial (with Kate Bush)

all that misery in the man's life, yet there is still hope.

  • Comment number 29.

That was meant to be Gabriel of course. Norrieitis creeping in! :-)

  • Comment number 30.

I don't think Peter Gabriel is miserable!

  • Comment number 31.

#22 Good to see your taking this seriously Mr PP, I particularly like the Seger one.

  • Comment number 32.

Just thought of one that would do for today and tomorrow:-

    Lonely Girl - Eddie Holman

  • Comment number 33.

Monday: I think ska may very well be the most happy-making musical style ever:
'Carry Go Bring Come' - Justin Hinds and the Dominoes

Soaring vocals also have the knack of lifting my spirit:
'You Are My World' - The Communards

I'll have to away to watch some Eastenders reruns before coming back with the sad ones :o)

  • Comment number 34.

#31 Paul, you don't think I Saw You is serious? It's a tale of insecurity, social ineptitude, and unattainability. Not to mention an incipient drink problem. That's both sad and serious. ;-)

  • Comment number 35.

    Monday;

All sad and thoughtful from me...

The River: Audra Mae (Big recommendation from me here. This young lady is Judy Garland's Grandniece and wrote the only original track on Susan Boyles Album). I promise, you won't regret giving this a play.

    Angel Sarah Mclachlan

    Motherland: Natalie Merchant

    Travelin' Soldier: Dixie Chicks

    Give Me Strength: Eric Clapton

  • Comment number 36.

Monday Opening Track: Happy and Sad

    * Sting - I'm So Happy; I can't stop Crying
    * Tom Waits - Martha
    * Luka Bloom - The Man is Alive
    * Strange Fruit - The Flame Still Burns

Also JFE (#28) is bang on with Peter/Katie
(nawww, not yon Jordan burd; ra yin wi ra Bush).

Hmm, I'm seeing a theme there: the kind of 'hope mixed with loss/sorrow' thing. Or am I just bonkers..?

  • Comment number 37.

#33 Back with a couple of suitably depressing songs:

'I Wish It Would Rain' - The Temptations
    'In The Ghetto' - Elvis

    And another happy one:
'Joy To The World'(Jeremiah was a bullfrog) - Three Dog Night'

  • Comment number 38.

I bet Ross from Larkhall is singing happy songs today. Are you looking for some kind of link from one song to the next? If not I don't get the whole "request one at a time" thing.

For Monday - (Sad) - Everybody Hurts - REM

(Happy) - Happy Days - Theme from the sitcom.

  • Comment number 39.

    Tuesday: First Attraction

OK, let's go for the QI buzzer with:
    * George Michael - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
(from his quite wonderful but woefully unknown 'Songs from the Last Century' album)

    But also:
    * Free - All Right Now
    * Billy Bragg -
Looking back to the first meeting
    * Bill Bailey - Unisex Chipshop
    * Madness - Lola
As usual, going for the lesser known version - this is from the .
    * The Passions -
    Foo Fighters cover also good
    * Hothouse Flowers - The Lakes of Pontchartrain
    * Fairport Convention - Matty Groves
    * Benjamin Zephaniah -
One of the standout tracks from the project
    * Pink Floyd - Young Lust
The live version from The Wall in Berlin with Bryan Adams' vocal would be ace.

    Was going to suggest
    * The Streets - Fit But You Know It
but it contains a few swearies very unsuited to teatime radio. Shame...

  • Comment number 40.

sadder than sad, Lorraine Ellison - Stay With Me
and saddest of all? Rachmaninov's Variations on a Theme of Paganini, the bit in the middle. Used to play it as a heartsick teenager when I wanted a good cry.
I think I'll go and have one now unless someone can come up with a happy song pronto

  • Comment number 55.

Wow, I missed the end of the show on Friday as I was out on a run for my marathon training. I thought I would have a quick peek at the blog before I jump in the car to head home and there it is: my theme suggestion !!!!

I'll give my happy song some thought, there are so many that make me smile!

My sad song would be "Something Inside So Strong"
It always makes me think of my eldest daughter Emma.
We lost her 18 months ago to Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 17.
The spirit, drive, energy and enthusiasm for life that she showed despite being confined to a wheelchair was an inspriration to everyone who met her.

It is directly due to her spirit that will make sure I get my 19 stones to the end of the Edinburgh Marathon in 12 weeks time.

    Thanks
    (and a blatent plug)

    TUESDAY

    (For Henri)

The Girl From Ipanema - Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz

"When she walks, she's like a samba that swings so cool and sways so
gently that when she passes, each one she passes goes - aah.
Ooh But he watches so sadly, How can he tell her he loves her,
Yes he would give his heart gladly,
but instead when she walks to the sea,
she looks straight ahead not at he,
Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, he smiles - but she doesn't see"

But I have no doubt that if it had been our Henri sitting at that corner bar on the road to Ipanema Beach, he would have had much more success with said young girl as she walked by....

    :)

  • Comment number 68.

  • Comment number 69.

This Woman's Work - Kate Bush

...and like Ross above, I have lived it.

  • Comment number 70.

    Yes, Bush takes some beating.

  • Comment number 71.

#69 - the persistence of blogs? good call. not a dry eye in the house. even the dog was howling.

  • Comment number 72.

#51 I youtubed that one - lacked a certain gravitas (the accent was all wrong), but a no' bad cover. Really glad they didn't inflict Paulo Nutini on us - he sounds like an old man with half his teeth missing. no offence to old men with half their teeth missing. no doubt he'll grow into his sound.

  • Comment number 73.

    #6/53

Unfortunately, I wasn't at the Motown gig, so I'm afraid I wasn't one of the geriatric jiggers - I was at a similar gig at the SECC about '94. It was fantastic! I was jigging about that night!

    #67

That's decent of you Adam - as it turns out, I downloaded this at the weekend after stumbling across Astrud when I was listening out for a version of 'Light My Fire' that I liked.

Of course, this could turn into 'Gaie's 'Dear Mr Wilbury' letter... and we don't want to get moderated again.

But accepting the Girl from Ipanema is tall and tanned and young and lovely,I've got absolutely nothing to lose...the older the fiddle, the better the tune...as they say.

As she glides forward, I look up and say

'Do your legs go all the way up to your bum?'

    She says:

  • Comment number 74.

#68 - Well in fairness the original was written by a man in the first person so Astrud and Getz had tae jiggle it a bit for a lady singer.
I think Getz may well have written "him" and not "he" (some sites back this up) however, Astrud sings "he" simply because it rhymes.

I started looking for your little MG

I started feeling kind of funny and free
    When you were around
And I began to cook up a plan to
    Take you out of town

If they can play Rachmaninov twice on Monday, they can play Handel once on Thursday.

    Sorted!

#76, Wouldn't have thought so Gaie, but why not suggest them as themes?
I can think of at least 20 with bird names.

But wait, you've used one of them already for tomorrow! Good suggestions nonetheless.

    TUESDAY

"When you sing this song in public it always works. I have five children to prove it!"

    'Seduced' - Mary Coughlan

    Bryan,

Please don't reject this one out of hand. It's wonderful. In fact, I'm gonna abandon Joe Dolan and make this my sole request.

Great suggestions all Norrie, I got nervous about the quality of the show last time I had a theme accepted, but if they just use the stuff from the blog we should be set for a good show.

    Paul,

As the Captain points out on #48, it depends who you ask. When in doubt look at a dictionary definition. Anyway, the theme is only ever as broad or as narrow as the team want it to be.

    And so to Tuesday

Well, we've all dried our eyes now and are ready to concentrate on tomorrow night's theme.

I've Just Seen A Face - The Beatles

this is one of my favs from the fab four. Great C&W song. We've had 'I Saw Her Standing There' a few times over the last six months.

Light My Fire - Clarence Carter from The Definitive Clarence Carter

Sorry to inanely rehash comments on last weeks thread, but when I heard Shirley Bassey's version last week, I realised I'd never heard a version of this (including the original)that I liked.

The trouble with nearly all of them is that in an endeavor to sound 'sexy' they only demonstrate what a hard song it is is to get right. Either too 'musical' like the original or too overblown, like Shirley.

Only one gets it absolutely spot on - Clarence Carter - a lovely soulful feel, which suggests that this is a really sexy soul number, something even the Doors didn't get.Pity Marvin didn't cover it.

    You're Beautiful - Love & Money

One of James Grant's finest, a tale of looking and longing - sadly unrequited. But it is beautiful.

Oh and, of course, You're Gorgeous - Babybird

hard to overlook, but doesn't take repeated listening - now and again, it's pleasent enough

Light My Fire is the preferred choice

    regardez youse

    Henri

#88, Good point Scotch, I have to say the captain didn't really need to enlarge the theme as Black Dog is well good enough on it's own. Well OK that makes it sound like the main course in a far eastern restaurant but you know what I mean!

#90, Henri, Light my Fire by the Doors is great so I'd be intrigued to hear the superior version you suggest.

#79 not sure I can handel Thursday's music...

Was the show good? Too busy to listen in this past few days

Did they play any Gilmour / Floyd / Tull?

    OK, stupid question...

    #55 moving story Ross.

A good pal of mine passed away a year or so ago to the same disease. We raised a fair bit of money through Edinburgh Marathon & also through the book "Great Sporting Memories" written in memory of my pal (copies still available, with all proceeds to SMNDA!)

I'm donating. Keep us in touch with your progress. I'm sure there are a few more bloggers will donate to this worthwhile cause

Another for Tuesday...a slushy song but a lovely one. The Rodgers and Hart song 'Where or When'. Recorded by lots of singers (e.g.Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Julie London and the like). I fancy hearing Bryan Ferry singing it or Dave Edmunds does a pretty version too.

    Another for Tuesday

I'm You're Man - Leonard 'Laughing Lenny' Cohen

those who know the artist well know that the nickname, although sarcastic, is actually well deserved - this is typical - quietly hilarious

    Tuesday - First Attraction:

    The Model - Kraftwerk
    - I'd like to take her home, that's understood!

Peaches - The Stranglers (radio edit!!)
    - well, it's true, isn't it?

A Big Hunk O' Love - Elvis Presley
    - from the early days when he was a DECENT singer!

See Those Eyes - Altered Images
    - oh Clare... Yes, you are sexier than Dana! sigh... ;-)

Get It Right The First Time - Billy Joel
    - how to make SURE the first time really works...

    Sexy Boy - Air
    - Partly in French but trust me, it's a fit for the theme!

I Just Want To Touch You - Utopia
    - great Beatles-inspired track from their excellent themed album

Do You Remember The First Time? - Pulp
    - remembering what that first time was like...

Feels Like The First Time - Foreigner
Love At First Sight - Styx (superb song)
When I Saw You - The Ronettes
I Looked At You - The Doors

...and - fits the theme but perhaps a little too abstract -
No. 1 Lowest Common Denominator - Todd Rundgren

    #numerous paulhandley posts

Paul, you know, once you have a theme chosen there`s no obligation for you to monitor it afterwards. I mean by all means open the Blog and just sit and stare at it for an hour or so, but really it`ll be alright on the night. You`ll see, it`ll look after itself.

I was thinking of suggesting "BIRDS" for a theme on Friday but was out so couldnae dae it but there's loads enough to make it a seperate theme (see #48 for a couple)

talking of being out on Friday
    #53 JFE
Two lassies next to us dancing at their seats, had a big fight with the folk behind them. Think there was a lot of that going on

    TUESDAY;

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Johnny Cash (tried for this last week)
Dancing in the Moonlight - Thin Lizzy (also suggested by JoeK earlier)
The Look of Love - Dusty Springfield

The Blondie tracks Atomic, Denis, Dreaming, Pretty Baby could all fit the theme but the most appropriate would probably be

(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear - Blondie
