My first job was stacking shelves in Fine Fare Supermarket after school (other defunct supermarkets were available. I bought Steely Dan's greatest hits with gatefold sleeve from my wages cos the band hired for the end of school disco (a prom in them days was somewhere you got blown to bits whilst eating candy floss in Largs) were pals of our physics teacher and played a lot of steely dan. The album was brill the band and disco were superb and my bright fluorescent yellow shirt was the business and I paid for it all from my nights stacking toilet rolls.

In the summer before Uni, I worked for a major electronics company, in the UK returns dept. This was the dept that took in, repaired & returned the duff stereos.

My job was repacking in the outshipping area, but before they were packed, there was a last minute check. And the record that 2 parallel packing lines used was Fleetwood Mac: Everywhere.

So I have the first 16 seconds of tinkly bells, up to where the drums come in, burned into my brain as it was played every minute or so, for 8hrs a day, 5 days a week, over 10 weeks.

both from the jukebox in the bar I worked in back in the day. Skyline Pigeon is the one that most reminds me of this as I'd never heard it before and we played it over and over when there was no-one in.
There was also Tumblin' Dice, All the Young Dudes, and most definitely not requested, Puppy Love and an electronic thing I can't remember the name of but which drove us nuts. The bar was an annexe to a large hotel which catered for Wallace Arnold coaches. To amuse ourselves when there were only a few OAPS quietly sitting in a corner we liked to put on Maggie May and just before the boom boom bit turn the volume up full blast. Come to think of it I now know how they felt as the last track on the Unwinding Hours album goes on forever really really quietly, so much so that I kept turning it up in my car and then nearly blew an eardrum as it hit fortissimo without warning. Other words beginning with F were available.

which hotel did you work in - I also spent my summer catering for the needs of Wallace Arnold's tourists. We also had Glenton Tours and Ribble too, I think. I remember Glenton because my uncle was a coach driver for them and got me the summer job in Braemar.

The entire working population of Braemar were students, it was totally mental. I couldn't repeat the stories without the moderator getting involved.

I felt sorry for the tourists, they were half dead before they got on the bus and one of them actually died shortly before arriving in Braemar.

It was an incrdible experience when I think about it

#24 It was the Glenburn in Rothesay. One of the Wallace Arnold drivers was an alcoholic and took his bus into a ditch on Skye - didn't seem to have any effect on his job. You could tell in the evening what state of intoxication he'd reached when he put Puppy Love on on the jukebox. The coach tourists only came in our bar during the day when there was no-one else there. It was the 'in' place for the Bute youth those 2 summers I worked there, in other words I'd have been there one way or another anyway so better getting paid than spending all my money and it was pretty lively in the evenings - till 10.00pm of course when it shut.

I've only ever stayed there during the Jazz festival. Very colonial. Rather manic.
Kinda like the Raffles Hotel in Singapore meets Fawlty Towers.

I enjoyed my time there very much. Lots of drinking and dancing.

Thanks, the other week when I was looking for a version of 'Light my Fire' that i liked, I found the Clarence Carter version on Spotify.

I thought it magnificent and subsequently bought a couple of albums of the time (69/70) on Amazon.

The CD arrived this week (along with three Steve Earle CD's that I bought after hearing Guitar Town on GIO).

Anyway, I'm just completely blown away by Clarence Carter and cannot understand why this wasn't bigger and more popular at the time. Fantastic playing, great tunes, great interpretations.

I just don't understand why I was so unaware of this tremendous artist. Maybe 'Patches' misled us all?

....and on the subject of Spotitfy - which is quite a cranky piece of software, anyone know how to fix

I'm slightly tickled that 'regular blogger' has been attached to my designation - 'regular' isn't a term that's normally ascribed to me.

Still, it introduces the concept of a kind of steady functionality if only in an etherial useless, pointless way.Hardly an achievement, I guess, but as Mary - Chapin Carpenter put it "But to be alive is to know your purpose, it's your place in the world"

And I suppose you're right enough, no doubt I'll be petitioning for Clarence in the coming days. But having given the matter some thought what I can say is that, in common with a number of bloggers, I never ask for music to be played simply because it fits a theme.

I only ask for songs or artists that I think deserve to be heard by a wider audience: I'm sure my being passionate on the subject is a pain.

In the background Steve Earle's 'Fearless Heart' is playing as I write - it should be given out on the national health, we need more fearless hearts, especially in expressing what you believe in.

I've only ever blogged under one name but have to admit to texting in under my feminine side with wonderful dishes 'I was eating'. It was all going so well until Bryan sussed me on thursday. After discussing my corn beef stir fry, black pudding masala, upside down moussaka (akassoum) and peaches on toast over the last couple of weeks, i suppose last thursday's dish of liver and kipper risotto was just one step too far. Either that or I forgot what phone I was texting with.

You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you canny fool oor Bryan!

One of the reasons I like frequenting this place is precisely because of the passion you and other bloggers have for music. I've seen songs and artists suggested or mentioned that I've either never heard before or forgotten about and given it a virtual spin while blogging. my presence here, in certain respects, is therefore somewhat parasitic - I'm feeding off your musical taste and experience without really contributing much in the way of original suggestions myself. but I, too, would not ask for anything to be played that I did not myself wish to hear or be heard just because it's on theme (a couple of throwaways excepted).

I cycled around Bearsden with the bag slung over my shoulder and a tranny (transistor radio)in the bag blaring away as I went on my round.

There is something magical about being up and out really early on bright sunny summer mornings. I can remember one particularly brilliant morning making my way through the leafy avenues,drives, quadrants, crecs and roads (no streets in Bearsden). There was absolutely no one about and it was quite still, the Marie Celeste of suburbs.I would deliver newspapers to houses with names like 'Borneo'. As the suburbanites slumbered securily, my tranny was blaring out 'Wild World' by Jimmy Cliff.

Reggae wasn't an understood or revered musical form at the time, but the sound of this song on this morning has stayed with me ever since.(It's not all that 'reggae' really, but it's a great interpretation of a Cat Stevens number).

On the surface of it, there was absolutely nothing wild at all about the area I grew up in, but under the crust of it's 'posh' associations and appearance we were having a quietly understated riot of a time.Maybe that's why it made such an impact.

Private Hire Taxi Driver - Summer of '74

I loved this job. Driving people about, listening to the radio.

The glorious summer of '74.Scotland in the World Cup. The idea of a 19 year old driving a taxi is unthinkable now, but insurance companies were a lot less picky in those days.

What I loved about it was picking couples up sober at the start of the hire when they were all polite and restrained and picking the same couples up six hours later when they were plastered, uninhibited and very often mercilessly unkind to each other.Some of the rows were spectacular, even among the 'just married'.

I once went to pick up an attractive young lady from the Black Bull in Milngavie. As we were driving along the dual carriageway, she said:

"Listen, driver, the person I was with in the Hotel has stolen all my money. I have no money to pay the fare"

"Really?" I said bamboozled, clueless as to what should happen now.

" If you take me home, I'll give you a short time" she said.

I had no idea what a 'short time' was and not wanting to show my ignorance, simply agreed to drive her home anyway. It was a nice day and Maria Muldaur on was on the radio.

When I got back to base, empty handed and reported that I turned down a 'short time 'in exchange for the fare, I was immediately denounced as an 'idiot' by my fellow drivers and reminded by the owner that his firm wasn't a division of social services.

But worse was to follow.

We had a contract to pick up the Bar Manageress from the Ram's Head pub on Maryhill Road and take her to Killermont Street Bus Station for 10:40. If we didn't get her there on time we had to drive her to East Kilbride for free. One night I arrived and they were having a 'lock in' and it took me ages to persuade her to leave.

We raced down Maryhill Road and I got in front of the bus she was supposed to be on, by zipping down a side street, and pulling out in front of the bus at the lights, on the outside lane, on George Square.

"I'll just get out here, son" she said. I looked in my rear view mirror to see the bus coming up the inside lane towards the lights.

"NO" I shouted, but it was too late. She'd opened the door, luckily leaving her leg inside, because the bus took the door off on the way past.

The Bus Driver was distraught, his 20 year accident free bonus was shot to pieces, and my job was, predictably (and rather unfairly, I thought) at an end. Myself and a porter from the North British Hotel tied the door back onto the Granada and I limped back to base, to be dismissed.

The whole of that summer one song permeated my mind and I was always cheered up when it came on the radio in the taxi:I still love it now.

I'm still thinking the wonderful Iris DeMent's - The Way I Should, would be a stand out track for tonight.

I think this is a clever song and it has Iris setting out her values of integrity and individuality. And with Mark Knopfler assisting on the guitar how can you go wrong!
