Next week's themes

Bryan Burnett | 20:00 UK time, Friday, 14 May 2010

calpton.jpgHere we go then with another week of Get It On themes. I'm trying to persuade Miss Babs to get me a guitarist in the studio for Tuesday's theme but she's not playing along with my demands. I might just have to get you to send me the chords for your suggestions and have a go myself. Mind you I did learn to play using Bert Weedon's book so I don't know how familiar I will be with today's pop riffs!

Monday
Tonight's show is a celebration of all things wee. Plenty of appropriate songs for this one. You could ask for Tiny Dancer to Short People or maybe Reet Petite. I would imagine that Little Boots and Heather Small will also feature on tonight's playlist...

Tuesday
I'm hoping we get lots of musicians getting in touch tonight to pass on their experience. That's because the theme is 'great songs to learn on the guitar'. What are the six string anthems that all would be Claptons should learn?

Wednesday
Real Gone Kid
Take on Me
Love Me Do
Young At Heart
Three word titles
That's tonight's theme

Thursday
50 years after The Silver Beetles came to Scotland we'll mark the occasion by returning to the theme of Beatles covers. We were out the door with suggestions last time so here's hoping there's still plenty left to suggest!

    Hmmm...

  • Comment number 2.

Oh, forgot there would be a new thread up and wrote on the last one. Well surprisingly enough it wasn't important. However, the other thing I was about to say was
I still don't get how Last fm works. I keep on trying, but continue to be baffled. Last night suddenly out of nowhere there was a really stonking track playing, sounded like Stevie Nicks with a great bass riff going on, no not Stevie Nicks doing the bass, well maybe it was, but anyway, could I find out what the track was? Could I expletive. Then I'd get two tracks on at the same time and I was quite demented. Even more than usual.
    Where am I going wrong?

  • Comment number 3.

and have we really run out of new themes?

  • Comment number 4.

and other brands of guitarists are available.

Uncle Vic did an excellent job this evening I thought, she said, not wishing to be negative on such a lovely evening.

  • Comment number 5.

    Well, this will be interesting.

Momentarily, I was jubilant when Vic announced the theme for Tuesday -I've longed for the opportunity to hear some really great guitar work on GIO, but Bryan just doesn't seem to be interested.

I had to chip into Children In Need to get Blackmail, Eric Stewart's finest moment, played.

But inevitably, we're slightly stuffed: great songs to learn on the guitar isn't quite the same as great things to hear on the guitar - it could even preclude great guitar playing.

So prepare for another outing for the obligatory early Beatles and the obligatory 'tears in heaven' token Eric Clapton track.

Miss Babs, can you clarify what's going on here?

If it's as per the blog description, I'm with one of the two things that everyone attempts - Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream. The other, I could do without.

OK Paolo, a challenge for you (given Wednesday's theme).

What's the most words in the title you can come up with?

Purely co-incidentally, I have been listening to an eleven word titled track (as I tucked into the first lobster of the season).

    (Braw by the way)

    or possessive

  • Comment number 29.

As long as it's music and not a direct insult aimed publicly at another blogger I am sure we will all be very happy with your 'pick'.

  • Comment number 30.

Backtracking now, DC? Tell us all just what kind of 'pick' you had suggested?

  • Comment number 31.

    MONDAY

'Oui, We Wee-Wee' - Soggy Bottom Boys

  • Comment number 32.

Believe me, the mods are stricter by far on some of the English blogs. If we don't stop attracting their attention they'll take all of the fun out of this one. Be careful what you wish for!

  • Comment number 33.

And over live to our match reporter...

....Well no goals yet but in what is shaping up to be an interesting match, we've already had two yellow cards. The first, when DC of Cellardyke was carded for a remark believed to be aimed at one of the Erskine Team. Our trackside reporter believes it was directed at the Erskine Captain's playing ability and despite his protests of innocence that it was tongue in cheek, he has now picked up his 2nd yellow of the season. The second yellow was for Jim the Erskine captain, which I presume was for retaliation although will need to watch the replay first as I was sound asleep at the time. Still Goalless here.

  • Comment number 34.

    What's all this fuss about?
There's alway been an issue on this blog by those with a greater sense of self perceived style than substance! Also the whinin' is so cyclical you can set the seasons by it!
Look, what to do is buy yer shout on Amazon, cdbaby, cduniverse etc. have it sent direct to Pacific Quay, embarrass the GIO Team into playing your exclusive pick of the day... sorted, just ask 'enri!

  • Comment number 35.

#34 better not use the word "pick" for a few days.....

  • Comment number 36.

    Might make the ears burn!

  • Comment number 37.

Hello bloggers hope you are all having a great weekend.

A wee bit of disquiet about the themes but hey:

From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come) - Dave Edmunds or Springsteen

    as suggested by Joe K.

Reminds me of the Boss in Cardiff one of the best gigs I have been at, took my blind nephew down and the Springsteen people were incredibly helpfull and generous. Springsteen opened the show with this track as a nod to Welshman Edmunds.

  • Comment number 38.

Haven't looked at the blog for a few weeks but nice to see nothing changes.

JfE has been playing a blinder with references to the "guidelines" and frequent references to the inner thoughts of the production team. The regular bloggers take the bait and the paranoia really kicks in when he scores a perfect five during one of last weeks show.

Now all the toys are scattered all over the nursery and all the players are throwing tantrums. You couldn't make it up.

Oh and as an aside could you play anything by Kylie on Monday night as she is a "WEE" cracker. [Maybe that's too obvious or perhaps not close enough to theme to count]

  • Comment number 39.

    MONDAY

    'Bantam Cock' - Jake Thackray

    'Minute Waltz' - Frédéric Chopin

  • Comment number 40.

    TUESDAY

'On Again! On Again!' - Jake Thackray

Jake insisted on nylon strings. Not being a guitarist, I don't know why. Just play it coz it's great.

  • Comment number 41.

    WEDNESDAY

'Angel from Montgomery' - Bonnie Raitt and/or John Prine

N.B. The duet can be found on 'The Bonnie Raitt Collection'

Probably on other compilations also. Norrie will know.

if I remember rightly someone out there's learning mandolin - is it erlando?

    - Jimmy Ryan

    TUESDAY

have to ask my son, who's learning guitar allegedly. Just think, if I still had all the money I invested in piano and guitar lessons, never since having heard a note to prove it, I'd be able to buy enough CDs to have for myself and give a duplicate of each to Pacific Quay.

    WEDNESDAY

  • Comment number 55.

aha! I knew there was someone. Now if I was to put you in touch with a banjo-player, and Henri, who's always banging on about something therefore could be the drummer - hey presto! That's the band's name BTW. I get the royalties.

  • Comment number 56.

I've already been in a band. I got kicked out by the rhythm guitarist, a sub-postmaster, who was jailed for embezzlement shortly thereafter and has subsequently died. Promise me this will be better.

  • Comment number 57.

Well you didn't die and surely getting kicked out was better than going to Barlinnie? What's the problem? Now we have half a movie script as well as a band. This can only mean success. Just keep practising. I'll get some songs down - it can't be that difficult, all you have to do is find one familiar-sounding line and then repeat it. It says so in the Bruce's Guide to Songwriting.

  • Comment number 58.

#52 DC it was personal. It was an insult and defamatory to one specific individual on a public forum and you clearly condoned it, see #278
    /blogs/bryanburnett/2010/05/next_weeks_themes_121.shtml

Can you clear up why you thought 'ers pick' was such an appealing idea?

  • Comment number 59.

    Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzz..........

For the record, I did not refer to Jim in any way at all. An idea had been posted on a previous blog & I kept it going.

Now, if anyone felt a need to relate to that term, it's up to them.

I did not insult anyone. If you must know, I have since received an insulting private e-mail from the person who wished to reprimand me.

Now can we please move on without further stirring?

    DC

  • Comment number 60.

For those who can't be bothered looking it up:

"Graaayyyyttt idea Adam, but at the end of a thread unfortunately. What about pasting onto the new thread?"

I've re-read it but can't find the insulting bit, nor which name I referred to nor why it is a personal message to any individual.

Nor why you are getting involved

    Have a nice evening

  • Comment number 61.

No, why don't you move on!

  • Comment number 62.

It just gets better and better. Did none of you think of standing as MP's during the last election? Claim and counter claim and more spinning than an old 78 and so easily offended.

Get aboard the real world and move on, it's getting boring.

  • Comment number 63.

    #59 / #60
DC for the record, the insulting and derogatory comments had been posted on #271 / #272 (clearly aimed at JFE) of said blog and you clearly condoned it, understood it and agreed, asking for it to be continued in #278.
Why you thought it appealing to continue the insult is childish and bullish.

I will get involved when I like especially if cyber bullying involved. It is a public forum.

The comments posted recently sour the good atmosphere of the blog.

Katty Mattea has a fantastic version of

    I Will

which ws recorded for a TV special on the beatles and included on her Ready For The Storm cd.

By amazing co-incidence I saw her perform this in the Kings Theatre exactly 13 years and 38 days ago! What a coincidence!!

  • Comment number 68.

Oh sorry thats only 2 words. Pity...

  • Comment number 69.

    Strewth!

You go out with your mates for a boys day out around Glasgow incorporating attending the world's most boring cup final, have way too much to drink, end up having a fish supper on Byres Road cause you're too drunk to behave in a restaurant and saunter back to Milngavie in a taxi at enormous expense.

    Guess What?

All the action was on the blog.

Still, it was a great day out with old friends. It's decades since I ate a fish supper on the street. It was a surprisingly difficult thing to do. I had to hold this burning hot supper with one hand and bite open the tomato sauce sachet whilst holding it with the other.

Despite being completely plastered, I can confirm that it was a truly excellent fish supper - Mario's Plaice (formerly MacPhee's).

We're thinking our next away day might be Leftield at Rockness... that really would be old men behaving disgracefully.

Cheer up everyone....I know what you mean, Jan, but i feel certain Adam's comments were supposed to be a light hearted bit of fun and I'm certain DC intended the same, - it's easy in a format like this to be misunderstood because you can see the words but not hear the tone nor the intention.

JfE is a great contributor to GIO, understands the guidelines and even gets a mention in the promotional video about the programme -this blog is absolutely in a class of it's own,I think, something we all contribute to in our own eccentric way.

Guess What - I've just down'd a double dose of 'Resolve' - and I thought it was for hangovers... obviously it fools you into thinking you can fix anything.

This is a music blog but it's also a wee community full of banter fun and discussion. As a result of that we occasionally poke fun at one another. We've all done it and probably all been on the receiving end. If we all took offence and called the moderators there wouldn't be a blog. DC and Adam are always slagging each other, Norrie gets it off everyone for his typos, Henri gets it for his long winded posts and cd deliveries to pacific quay, I get it occasionally for my lists, etc etc. This has all kicked off cos Jim who has joined in the 'Klaxon' gag was pleased to have 5 songs on his list played one night. So adam suggested having an ers pick. Obviously poking fun at his selections. Now if Jim wants to take offence at that then why is he joining in the Klaxon gags that run from week to week. This is a fun place to be if everyone's willing to chill and take as well as give. Yes it's a music blog but if you just want lists of suggestions then they can be found on facebook. Not a criticism by the way, just an observation. I'm on facebook but prefer the blog. Jim,lighten up a bit. You're much more fun when you're joining in the fun.

My thoughts for the coming week:

    Monday - all things wee.
Little Red Rooster – The Rolling Stones
    Itchycoo Park – Small Faces
    Rock Follies – Little Ladies

Please, please and thrice please do not play Tiny Tim’s tip toe through the tulips as it reminds me of all that was bad with family favourites.

Tuesday - 'great songs to learn on the guitar'
Little Red Rooster – The Rolling Stones
    Radar Love - Golden Earring
Sweet child o' mine - Guns 'N Roses
Sultans of swing - Dire Straits
Smoke on the water – Deep Purple

    Wednesday - Three word titles
Little Red Rooster – The Rolling Stones
Black magic woman - Fleetwood Mac
Black magic woman – Carlos Santana
    Hold the line – Toto
Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin

    Thursday - Beatles covers
What’s this with the Beatles the Stones have been as influential as they have so how about the same theme for the them, but anyway the fab four did write some great stuff which was better covered by others like

With a little help from my friends – Joe Cocker
    Day Tripper – Jim Hendrix
Deer Prudence – Siouxie and the Banshees
    Every little thing – Yes
Here comes the sun – Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel
I saw her standing there – Maggie Bell
I wanna be your man – Rolling Stones

How about these for themes, if they haven’t already been done,

Coalitions i.e. artists or bands that, while being from different musical genres, have joined up to record a sing..

Walk this Way – Aerosmith/Run DMC
You can’t always get what you want – Rolling Stones/London Bach Choir

Or Public Transport as a theme

Great programme and while I don't always agree with the choices its always good to hear other peoples favourite songs and bands Unfortunately I can only get to listen to you on Thursdays between 6.30 and 8

JfE re-the Zero 7 link on the previous blog - enjoyed some of the mellower, trippy tunes. Thanks for sharing!

    #69 I like you when you're tiddly!! ;o)
    & #76 well said.

    Monday
    Bronski Beat Small Town Boy

    Tuesday
    # 15 Re - Everlong - I haven't heard that particular live session, but do enjoy an acoustic version of this more. It's almost a different song - not that the pacier, noisier full-band version is bad by any means. It just doesn't get to me in the same way.

    Wednesday
    Alison Moyet All Cried Out
    REM Losing My Religion
    Erasure Ship of Fools
My Chemical Romance Famous Last Words (for the emo kid in me)

Two incredible songs dedicated to the oldest profession
    Love for Sale Ella Fitzgerald
    Sweet Painted Lady Elton John

    Thursday
Got a whole album of wonderful Beatles covers by The Swingles (this would be about 20 years old, so not featuring a current lineup and unlikely to be on any Ö÷²¥´óÐã database) I could recommend, but think that's pushing my luck.
So backing joe k's Alison Krauss instead.

#84 - A certain Mother who shall remain nameless has told her daughter to knit herself a man so often that the daughter in question is contemplating matricide as the only way to make the Mother who shall remain nameless keep her thoughts to herself.

    #67 - #68 - Norrie - Are you confusing Wednesday's theme with Thursday's?

    ;o)

    MONDAY

I Will Wait for You - Tiny Dancers

one that got away, a great wee pop song

    TUESDAY
A very long time ago a pal played us his Stefan Grossman LP, (Vinyl, kids - oops, none of them around here. Are there?) Absolutely loved the finger-pickin' guitar, went and saw the man himself in a town near Cellardyke and you'd have sworn there was more than one person playing if you'd had your eyes shut. Many years later bought a CD off e-bay and was mightily disappointed apart from a couple of tracks. Ah well, tastes change, but I'd still give anything to play guitar like this (or even at all):

    Guitar Blues - Stefan Grossman
1'38" of perfection - and there's always time for 1'38" of perfection

I was talking recently to the guy who'd brought along that original album and he said he'd grown to loathe it as his brother was determined to play all the tunes on his own guitar and practised over and over and over, very slowly...

or if you'd prefer a lovely gravelly voice along with the finger-pickin' then
New Cocaine Blues - Hans Theesink

    WEDNESDAY

Handle With Care - Traveling Wilburys

    Hi Bryan
Just found the Blog and this will give my son Connah a break from frantically typing in text requests on way to Air Cadets in Banchory . For Mondays 'wee' show how about Elton Johns Tiny Dancer? A lovely song, and especially good if you have access to a live version. Look forward to listening in on the road tomorrow, always fun.

#72 - Erlando - You might be stretching credibility a wee bit too far. Good luck!

    #79 - Ally_fae_Costorphine - Have we met before? I'll second your Joe Cocker "With A Little Help From My Friends" for Thursday. It would also work on Monday. Speaking of Beatles covers;

I'd like to request Stay Young by Ultrasound. I once saw them supporting Travis and they were brilliant. Their singer was a big massive guy ironically called 'Tiny'.

#8 DC Spring hasn't finished til the Swifts arrive which happened on Sunday in Ayr, however there isn't much foliage on the trees yet around here so I wouldn't say its Summer, don't know where that LEAVES us :)
