It must have been about eight years ago. My daughter was 13. Pop Idol was on the telly. Napster was the most visited household website at the time. One day I came in from work to be met by my excited daughter who couldn't wait to let me hear a Gareth Gates song that she downloaded cos I would love it and he wrote it himself. It was mack the Knife!



One I never realised was a cover until quite recently was Fern Kinney's Groove Me but then discovered King Floyds original which is far superior.

After the success of Bat Out of Hell the follow up album was waiting to be recorded but after months of vocal problems for Meat Loaf, Jim Steinman gave up and recorded the album himself. Most of the album has been covered by Meat Loaf on other albums since.

So How about Stark Raving Love (or at least the intro) which was rewritten as Holding out for a hero and given to Bonnie Tyler!

Oh well, I thought it was a wonderful concert, great band and David Lindley does that thing of sounding like a complete string section on his own. JB's voice is as good as ever, and my only complaint is that another half hour would have been perfect - it seemed that no sooner had I sat down than it was time to go home.

I really went to see David Lindley and would have liked more of the El Rayo-X stuff like Crazy 'Bout a Mercury. JB has a wonderful voice (and looks great) but, for me, his material has individual brilliance but a narrow stylistic range which can lead to listening fatigue.

It would not have pleased tonight's audience, but I would have welcomed a chance to hear more of DL's back catalogue.

Still, you don't often see a lute and mandola at a rock concert (see previous theme ideas).

Awesome: the worlds biggest singalong, as one classic after another poured out.Fantastic musicians, fabulous lights and graphics. Moving, in places, like the version of 'Something' for George - hilarious in others - like the spontaneous outpouring of good fun: I never thought I'd find myself out of my seat for Ola de obla da but it's surprising how well it worked on the night.

The set list reads like the aural landscape of your life and then you remember some of the things he didn't do, like 'Can't Buy Me Love' or 'I Saw Her Standing There' and given he started at eight and finished after eleven, it was a breathtaking achievement for a 68 year old man.

Highlights for me (and they were all highlights) were hearing things like 'I've Just Seen A Face' 'Helter Skelter' and 'I've Got A Feeling.'

I took my sister, ( who saw the Beatles in the Odeon in 64) Smiffy and our collective morons (age 15 - 28) and we were all totally amazed.

It really was that good.We're all completly staggered by what we've just witnessed and heard.Not enough superlatives.

#76, you're quite right about JB, I can only listen for so long then it's time for a change, whereas TP, well can listen to him forever. But unlike our regular concert-goer, Henri, I don't get out much and it was a sheer delight to be back at a concert and such an enjoyable one. As you say, Jackson looks awfully well - I took photies and his skin sure don't look like Keith Richards'.

Paul, hope you had a good holiday and spent much of your time exploring the bars and juke-joints to bring home some good ol' American music for us on GIO who are always eager for new material.
