Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:59 UK time, Friday, 2 July 2010

alphabet.jpgFor the next few weeks we're going to try something completely different when it comes to choosing our themes. Over 26 shows we're going to do the Get It On Alphabet of Themes. 26 themes, each one representing a different letter of the alphabet, and all of them chosen by you.

Just to make it that bit more exciting we're not going to pick the next night's theme until the last ten minutes of the previous show. I realise that this is going to inconvenience some of you who like to think about your suggestions a few days in advance but at least you'll have more opportunities to get your themes on and you can start thinking about them as soon as you like.

We'll start off with a alphabet themed show on Monday and then on Tuesday it's themes beginning with 'A'...

Monday
From ABC to the Q-Tips, tonight's show will be an A-Z of great pop music. It's bands and songs featuring letters of the alphabet. Plan B the singer and Plan B the Dexy's song could both feature as could Suzi Q or Jamie T. Air on a G string anyone?

Tuesday
Tonight we kick off our themes A-Z with a theme beginning with an A. Get your ideas in and tune in on Monday to find out which one we are going to go for...

Wednesday
It's a B theme so it could be bands who have split up, big sounds from small artists, or even brass bands?

Thursday
C - classic singles, classical crossover, cars...you tell me what you fancy doing as a theme.

Haud me back - this is revolutionary.

  • Comment number 2.

What's the link for Edith Bowman?

  • Comment number 3.

Life's too short for this - perhaps GCHQ would be interested.

We should all be outdoors, anyway.

    MONDAY

    Anything by PDQ Bach

    Or J.Tull

If they want to squeeze this into July we'll need a show every day, 7 days a week. Is that the plan?

  • Comment number 5.

Interesting - a couple of weeks ago we were totally astonished when Graeme Stewart admitted he'd never heard Rocky Raccoon.

Guess what - Edith's just discovered Stevie Winwood was in Taffic and The Spencer Davis Group. We've all been in love with 'I'm a Man' since 1967.

Don't you think they should get some of us auld yin's to produce these shows?

I could tell them about Family.

  • Comment number 6.

The best thing to come out of Wales, Taffic.

    Until Cerys came along...

This is our Ö÷²¥´óÐã, we pay for it, and we should get to choose who covers when our beloved presenter, (who has more holidays than Wogan ever did), is on vacation.

    I vote for Alison Craig.

Ye cannae blame Norrie for the superfluous apostrophe.

(He has a tendency to forget where that key is @).

I do, however, approve of the deliberate mistake. Most amusing.

Not that you require my approval...

    I vote for henri!

Great show from Edith tonight. Even Laurie Anderson sounded great. Can you imagine the authorities reaction if a campaign started to put that at the top of the charts?

Another example of how the less obvious tracks make great radio. Vic later played a track by a band called Broken Bells. Magic.

When will GIO get the message that a good format can be made great by paying attention to what's being requested at the margin.

The team meeting must have been something like:

'Right, so I'm off on holiday that fortnight and then Bryan's off then... and then Mandy's off when when Bryan comes back....what can we do that means we don't have to think about what to do with the show over the summer ...?'

  • Comment number 22.

how to amuse yourself while doing lengths of the Gourock Pool:

    themes
    A - All things American
    B - Blues night
C - circuses, carnivals and carousels
    D - drummers
    E - eternity, everlasting, forever
F - flying pigs night - a whole night devoted to FPs
G - game on - sports and games
H - Hi can't think of a thing for this one
I - If only and what if - songs of things that might have been
J - (see you) Jimmy - songs, bands, singers named James or derivatives
    K - knowledge
    L - lyrics - the best all-time or funniest
    M - myths and legends
N - nearly famous - new singers and bands
O - old testament - we did the gospels, now let's hear it for Delilah
P - punks, teds and hippies - which were you and what songs applied?
Q - quarrels, songs that feature, songs that caused them, either within the band or in your home
R - record shops - what we bought in them, memories such as those shared on the blog a few weeks back
    S - session musicians
    T - tales - story songs
U - under the radar - the best songs that never made it
V - very best pop songs of all time
W - what, why and when? songs that have specific memories for you - not necessarily the big things like weddings, but the small but significant moments that a certain song brings back
X - the unknown; artists we know well, but the songs that don't get played
Z - zithers and ukeleles - odd intruments used in

as you see I've shamelessly stolen other people's ideas ((M)Julie, (Z)Glen) and no doubt there are plenty that have been done before - but hey you don't really think I've got all day to do this.

I do have a life, you know.

I just don't know where I put it.

Why don't we just agree to re-convene in September?

  • Comment number 29.

#25 I can't vouch for us all thinking about alphabetic themes while doing lengths. Some people are far too busy making sure their hair doesn't get wet.

Y is of course for songs with yodelling in them.

I hope you have a fab time on your hols.

I know, though I usually get waxed before I go swimming, so I don't have to worry about my hair.

  • Comment number 32.

I must suggest this simple but effective method to the ladies down at the pool next week.
Perhaps by way of thanks they'll sign up to the HH GIO Dreadzone campaign. Though I fear some may get confused and wonder why you're running a campaign for long unbrushed hair and advocating waxing at the same time.

What a great way to get the themes and blog suggestions going. Looking forward to the next 26 shows.

  • Comment number 39.

    Suggestion for Tuesday:

B backing singers. From Jagger on You're So Vain to Justin Timberlake with Blackeyed Peas. What are you favourite songs with notable backing singers. Or perhaps you read the sleeve notes and like the work of session singers such as Jeni Muladur, Katie Kissoon, Carol Kenyon etc.

  • Comment number 40.

    #39

and such as Lesley Duncan... I've still not completely forgiven GIO for going overboard about Malcolm McLaren and not even mentioning Lesley.

S should be for sessions musicians. Did you know Led Zeopplin were the backing band on the Mickey Most production of Lulu's 'The Boat That I Row'?

  • Comment number 41.

Of course Lesley Duncan would be perfect for this proposed theme!

Good trivia Henri. I am pretty sure all four members also played on a PJ Proby album and possibly a single pre Zep but I don't recall which one I'm afraid.

    Gaie,

For H you could request HEBREW BIBLE which would leave the O free for another theme.

  • Comment number 44.

    More theme ideas -
    Tuesday
    Air travel

    Wednesday
Baked goods - songs about bread, cakes or their basic ingredients
Baseball - songs about American cities with Major League teams
    Blood

    Thursday
    Celsius - songs about temperature
    Confusion - songs about uncertainty

    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 45.

    #43 Good idea.

O - zero, nothing; is that a theme or my store of ideas?

    MONDAY

Johnny B. - the Hooters *choice*

    J. Smith - Travis

    Poor Boy - R.L. Burnside

Let Me Take You There - Plain White T's (prefer it to Hey There Delilah)

time I got an MP3 player - most listening done in the car up till now with a couple of hours a day spent on the M8 (so filling one of the GIO membership criteria) but thanks to GIO a great and diverse set of individual songs building up that I'd like for keeps. Note to the work - when you kick me out in August, this would be a nice leaving pressie!

  • Comment number 46.

For Monday - Austin - Blake Shelton

"And P.S. if this is Austin, I still love you."

    Bryan will know the song.

    Roll on R - Revenge - Retribution - Reprisals - Recrimination - Retaliation - Repulsive - Repellent - Repugnant - Rancorous, Raging Resentment

    This could be fun!

  • Comment number 54.

    Monday

B 52'S - Deadbeat Club not Love Shack, been done to death

Bryan, last week you almost played a track from the 10CC album 'Sheet Music'(one of my all time favourites, because I discovered it all by myself in 1974) but you ran our of time. Monday is obviously 10CC night.

Hotel - 10CC - from the album 'Sheet Music'

Anyway the wind blows J J Cale & Eric Clapton (this is great)

    Gaye - Clifford T Ward

    Nutrocker - B Bumble & The Stingers

    Back in the U S S R - The Beatles.

any of these will do, love them all, though it would be nice to hear 10CC or JJ Cale - great tracks deserving of an airing.2nd also for El Rayo X which I've just checked out on Spotify - amazing how everyone is moving to 'Dreadzone'.

  • Comment number 55.

#51 you're very kind, mary-doll, it's just a symptom of my shallow female mind, I should probably be thinking about politics and world affairs when I'm toiling up and down the pool; that's probably what men do.

#54 2nds for JJ Cale and EC, but oh please no, not for Clifford T!

  • Comment number 56.

    #55

Well, I guess you've been getting Clifford T flung at you since 1972?

I've always had a soft spot for it because it came out just before the name 'Gaye' became eternally changed along with the changed meaning of the word 'gay'.

Listening to it now, I was taken aback that the lyric doesn't especially match the rather dreamy hippie - trippy musical delivery, I have to say - it sounds a bit attitudinaly chauvinist. Proof that it's not just common parlance that moves on, but attitudes too.

    regardez vous

    henri

p.s. Bryan, please withdraw my request for 'Gaye' by Clifford T Ward

  • Comment number 57.

#55 not at all and far from it. That was a really considered, brilliant flight of fancy - if that is really all that it was. but it wasn't. don't be explaining it away as anything less - I think most of us here would be happy to have our names associated with even just 4 of those themes. Fantastic. Stop talking yourself down, missus.

  • Comment number 58.

    #56

His band Cliff Ward and the Cruisers now also has unfortunate connotations.

  • Comment number 59.

Gary U.S Bonds - Jole Blon, there are many versions and this is a cracker, featuring of course a Mr B Springsteen. This was one of the songs Bruce sang with Terence Trent Darby at their joint gig but I digress....

    or

Sophie B. Hawkins - Damn I Wish I Were Your Lover

    or

J.D Souther - You're Only Lonely , this was a long overdue minor hit for him.

My fave Plan B track is - Stay Too Long

I'm still posting from outside UK but did not want to miss the fun with the 26 themes.

  • Comment number 60.

You'd have more fun driving quickly over a hump-back bridge.

  • Comment number 61.

#60 why is someone as smart as you always so miserable? you really don't give the rest of us much to aspire to. I knew it was a mistake to give up my subscription to the Cheeky Girls' website when Lembit got the heave ho. Very shallow of me. Should have listened to my heart instead.

  • Comment number 62.

    Monday

    ABC Poisoned Arrow
