Did I say I enjoy a bit of camp? well, the guy lines don't stretch to the New York Dolls. Tight trousers and gender quirks don't quite do it if the songs are pish. Cheap Stones rip offs who thought they were punk, but glam, too.

Some great stuff already above, not least Sting, Don Henley, Lennon (I'd have gone for Mother myself, iirc there's a recording from the Madison Square Garden gig), Tom Waits and Springsteen - City of Ruins is essential.

My suggestions though are
* The Pogues - Thousands are Sailing
which namechecks half of Manhattan.
* Bob Dylan - - not all NYC immigrants come from overseas. This is from the time when he was sitting in Greenwich Village, not getting the gigs.
* Matthew's Southern Comfort - Woodstock
as that was in New York State. Which also opens the door for .

Completely agreeing with Glen for O is for Orchestration.

I can think of a full show's worth off the top of my head, starting with
Fiction Factory - Life in a Northern Town
and carrying on with Strawberry Switchblade (and their Sibelius steal), Modern Romance, The Beatles (multiple options there), Blur etc etc.

Great suggestion by Joe though it is quite interesting that My City of Ruins by Springsteen is not about New York. It is about Asbury Park and was played live by him a year before the 911 attacks.

That said it is a great song and most people will rightly assocaite it with New York. Wonder if there is a theme idea in there songs which have become linked with events...Cars and Drive being an obvious example.

#62 You just spotted the flaw in the concept. Someone would be bound to notice and there'd be outrage at why he only ever played Cage or something. Best stick to something safe. Like Space. ;o)
BTW - I think Vic's doing a great job. A good mix of stuff getting played. And he's got the patter - can't remember who it was that filled in a while back - he didn't seem at all comfortable with reading out comments or creating a flow or ambience, he just announced the songs.

I think the last guy's speciality was commerce. His knowledge of the Beatles would not have covered a postage stamp.

The final front ear.

Even if his knowledge of the Beatles was patchy, it could have been made up for by sounding like he was engaging with the listeners and enjoying the process. That's another reason I listen in - I don't always enjoy every song, but the banter and feeling of being part of something where everybody has a shot at a shout makes it for me. That other guy didn't do it. (His final front ear must be burning)
Now I sound a bit needy. Have we done N already? ;o)
