Perfect in every way

Singers who don't need any help to sound good? I'll start with two suggestions based on my experience of live performances and incredible vocals. With my better half I saw Leona Lewis live earlier this year. It was a show rather than a concert, but her voice was simply incredible. Hence, Bleeding love - Leona Lewis. The only other singer whose voice was as good (or better) live in concert was Trisha Yearwood. Hence, On a Bus to St Cloud - Trisha Yearwood.

A final suggestion based on my own experience of seeing "singers who don't need any help to sound good": If I should fall behind - Springsteen.

Total agreement, Scotch.

50's night took me by surprise, I hadn't expected to enjoy it so much.I think it's because you only here an occasional 50's record and it's usually mixed up with other stuff, so it sounds out of place or dated.The cumulative effect of hearing them as a piece was surprisingly effective and evoctaive of forgotten, simpler times.

I now feel compelled to re evaluate my early childhood which I have always looked back on as a rather empty colourless sepia world: but last night the music brought memories back in HD colour.

It wasn't just the music, though - the studio atmosphere shone through in a way that we only get glimpses of usually - presenter and producer on great form, I thought.

A joy to listen to... some of us here, not least yours truly, are good at venting our frustrations so the least I can do is get right behind the programme and the team when it goes well.

It can't have been colourless and sepia.

As with a typical show there were few surprises, an equal mixture of well known rock'n'roll tunes and well known Tin Pan Alley songs.

The purest voice (as opposed to the best) voice I've ever heard was Karen Carpenter on Rainy Days and Mondays.

To pick the best voice is just impossible as there are so many fabulous singers in so many different styles. However one who is vastly underrated in my opinion is James Ingram. Just Once would be brilliant to hear although the single was credited to Quincy Jones even though James was the vocalist.

Feedback: not enough rock & roll; whitewash? someone's never heard of whitewash?; too much giggling.
Sorry, I'm probably not on best form at present.

well, my memory is quite faulty, I'm sure, but my understanding was that sepia is a tone and not a colour. It's a long time since I had to think about it,though, so I shall stand corrected.

It's good to have my own imprecise and careless blogging challenged.

Precision in the selection of words is an important feature of my work, so the chance to be quite careless here in a spontaneous way is quite liberating, but not good for me.

I shall pay more attention in future.

I won't win anyone over on the blog by suggesting my favourite for this, but... after an evening spent in the company of people I really don't ever want to be in the company of again, trying to plaster on a grin but managing only to get plastered, I'm going to be brave:

'Twas the gaping social differences that put the spanner in the works for me. When teenaged boys dress like their dads, there's something not quite right. And if I ever have to listen to another over-privileged, public-school educated half-wit who onlyevergotajobbecauseoftheirconnections witter on about the inadequacies of the other 99% of the populace and their lack of go-get (whilst they studiously ignore the copious amounts of alcohol being consumed by their very under-aged offspring, but it's OK - they're not upsetting the neighbours because there are none on this glorious estate who aren't tenants..........) I think I might have to punch them. Never again.

Jim Morrison is indeed a great singer, however, The Doors version of their own masterpiece has always been spoiled by that overly long hippie fest organ solo. Clarence Carter's version ( fabulous singer) allows us to hear the song as it might have been: soulful. Great voice, fabulous version,the best, imho.

I took my mum to see Frank Sinatra at Ibrox in 1988.It's wasn't a massively popular gig, as I remember it (which strikes me as incredible now) but the man himself was on great form and he was a fair age then.
