as for #12 - before I started listening to this programme I had a real aversion to most things Morrissey. Having heard him and The Smiths countless times on the show, I must admit I have actually come to like a few of the songs. Maybe one day we'll have Henri say the same of The Proclaimers.... PMF.

Thanks, Norrie - however, I've inadvertently solved the problem. Before returning to the thread I went off to investigate again, found a decent copy on Amazon and bought it with 'one click'.

That 'one click' thing is really compulsive.

Well, The Smiths were a mystery to me until I started blogging: just didn't get it. My kids were small when they were about and I wasn't really listening to music that intently or tuned into the zeitgeist at the time.

Last year I took an interest in Kirsty MacColl and noticed the playing on Electric Landlady. Through listening to GIO and the ongoing debate here I began to pay attention. Then, I was listening to Steve Coogan on Desert Island Discs and he chose 'Panic' which I realised was really tight, so downloaded it.

I still don't get it - the lyrics are mince, but the band are really really tight and I love Johnny Marr's playing.

Of course 'the music that they constantly play' says nothing to Morrissey about his life - it's a disco - not a philosophy class - what did you expect? Plato? Panic? You wonder to yourself - about what?

Same problem I have with 'Dignity' - shocking lyric, which for a band named after an unbane Steely Dan track is just depressing.

So I'll give the Proclaimers this - lyrically, they at least don't grate on the nerves - it's everything else about them that does my nut in - mostly that they are revered here (on GIO) in a way which is completely disproportionate to other great Scottish talent: James Grant, Jack Bruce and countless others..

Anyway, I'm pleased to tell you that this summer I bought an album of Smiths singles - they were pretty much a singles band. There's a really neat looking boxed set of singles with original artwork that I quite fancy, too.

Jury out on The Proclaimers...long way to go...Dignity...never!

Not by John Peel and Dave Lee Travis. You are surely referring to namby pamby conservative dj’s who only want to appeal to the masses and not to the cutting edge, forward thinking types whose open mindedness has led to the great admiration and gratitude of real music lovers. Often their legacy is only appreciated years later because, like the music they played, they were AHEAD OF THEIR TIME. A good example of this is the music of NICK DRAKE who died in relative commercial obscurity but is now often played on the wireless by said dj’s and used in commercials even.

I don't think it was ever released on cd. So will not be on digital system - you should have smuggled a copy in with cake.

I managed to buy a CD version on Amazon last night, there's a few - including a German import with additional tracks.

Bryan will forget to bring his copy in - might be time to get Sister Margaret to make additional Banana loaves again. I've remembered this happened the last time The River Detectives came up on GIO but I couldn't source a copy at the time.

They don't have 'In The Land of Grey & Pink'?
