What makes a great show! In all honesty I imagine it's one that attracts loads of interest with lots of requests from all sources. That's probably what the team set out to achieve. Tonights Scottish Voices was one such show so yeah it was a great show.

The fact I only enjoyed about three of the songs probably puts me in the bah humbug category but much of it felt like one of those Scotland the Brave cds you used to get free with the Sunday Papers. Still, liking wednesdays theme so off to give it some thought1

#4 hate to disagree with anyone on this blog (aye, right) - but I think you're playing to the gallery a bit here, paolo. With the exception of a couple of songs, I thought tonight's show was actually pretty damn good. I was very glad not to hear Clare Grogan and Subo, too.

I've been in touch wi an awld school pal o' mine who is now a Doctor in Australia, by the name of Donald MacGeachy. He is the cousin of the late Ian MacGeachy also known as John Martyn.

I copy his mail here:

"His mither wis fae London. She met ma Uncle Tommy whin they wis singin fir the troops durin the war. Uncle Tommy was Eddie's (ie Donald's dad, who was our PE teacher at the Waid Academy) brither and definitely Scottish. Split wi his wife early efter Ian wis born and Ian spent maist o' his childhood in Glesgae, brocht up by ma Granny MacGeachy (also definitely a Scot, despite the assertion on the previous posting!). He did frequently go doon tae stay wi his Mum in London, usually Summer hols. Get his autobiograpphy" Some people are crazy", it's all in there".

So there ye go. You can take the man oot o' Scotland, but ye'll never take the Scot oot o' the man.

I just gave my honest opinion, it wasn't a show I enjoyed that much personally, and tried to balance it by saying that it was probably a great show by the shows objectives. I'm well aware many would have enjoyed it, yourself included Mary Doll. There'll be shows i'll like that you possibly won't. Different tastes and all that. I thought we were allowed opinions without the implication that it's just for effect.

For the record I enjoyed John Martyn, James Grant and Frightened Rabbit.

#14 sorry, mary-doll, but I'm with Paolo on this one. Always happens when it's 'very, very busy tonight'. It was a real happy surprise to hear Frankie though and given the ominous 'we'll be having Caledonia, but not necessarily by FM' I was pretty sure he was going to be by-passed, so while Darlin's not my favourite, it's a step in the right direction and the team could be forgiven for thinking 'there's no pleasing them'. Encouragement's the key - well done, team, it didn't hurt that much, did it. And there's loads more Frankie Miller songs for you to work your way through. Paolo & me will be happy to advise.

It's all pretty subjective stuff, but for me, the demon word is 'Scottish'.

People who are otherwise thought clinically sane at all other times become utterly irrational as soon as 'Scottish' enters the frame. I'm afraid I'm with Renton from Trainspotting on this one.The results were entirely predictable.

At the end of the programme did we rush to download 'Fergus Sings The Blues?' - another dreadful lyric which plays on nationalist populism, is not greatly sung by a singer of no great note and is a salutory reminder that the idea that 'white men can sing the blues' is not one worth pursuing.I am not a purist, but I doubt it's 'Blues' either.

Yet, there it is: first song of the night on great Scottish voices.

#19 The gallery of those who spend blogs prior to themes prejudging what the show will be like and why it could be full of so much tripe and who then, once the show is over and they've played a few of those songs thus anticipated, go on to say they had expected as much and how disappointing the show was. Occasionally (?) it seems like it's "the bloggers v the producers" here - maybe that's what this place is all about (and why I don't really fit into the community all that well because I come across as a complete brown-noser and offensive to fellow bloggers who don't mind voicing their issues etc.) As you say - it's all a matter of taste. But I, too, qualified my comment, with "a bit" - no need to be overly defensive. I thought I was in keeping with the spirit of the theme.......

For the record, I'm with gaie on the encouragement bit. Sugar works better than salt. Mostly.

And the songs you did enjoy we both agree on, so there's a thing. ;o)
