The man with the midas touch...

Bryan Burnett | 09:23 UK time, Monday, 31 January 2011

Following the sad news about the death of the composer John Barry, we have decided to change tonight's theme to 'film music' . Barry was best known for his work on films like Born Free, Midnight Cowboy and of course, the James Bond films. I imagine we'll play lots of his music tonight. The Bond themes will feature heavily but there are so that he was responsible for. I was very fond of the music in Dances With Wolves and thought it was a huge part of the film's appeal. As well as John Barry's finest work, what were the other stirring soundtracks that you remember?

*We'll run the 'opening album tracks' theme on Tuesday and do 'closing tracks' on Wednesday.

Pete's sake, after all that thought at the weekend I have to start over???

Blue Skies Forever - Frankie Miller (All The Right Moves)
if it was good enough for Tom Cruise.....

Just Like Honey - The Jesus & Mary Chain (Lost in Translation)

  • Comment number 7.

Dark Night - The Blasters - Anything from From Dusk Till Dawn would do

  • Comment number 8.

Are we talking music written specifically for films or any song that's featured in films?

Theme from Shaft / Isaac Hayes (full length version if possible)

Also Sprach Zarathustra / Deodato (full length version if possible)
A top ten hit in 1973 for this funked up version of the 2001 space odyssey theme. Richard Strauss would have loved it.

The Blowers Daughter / Damien Rice
    From the film Closer

For all the prestige exposure and hype surrounding Bond themes, none of them have ever topped the the uk charts.

  • Comment number 9.

These songs are all on the soundtrack of 'The Secret Life Of Bees'...

    'Keep Matchin'' - Raphael Saadiq
'Song For Mia' - Lizz Wright
'Doncha Know (Sky Is Blue)' - Alicia Keys
'It's All Right' - Curtis Mayfield
    'Breakaway' - Irma Thomas

    Umpteenth time of asking! Please?

The Daughter surprises me by playing me all sorts of music I didn't think she'd have heard of...even went through a wee Buddy Holly phase...thanks to the soundtracks of films like 'Juno' and 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' (yes she likes Michael Cera)...

    Juno:
'Sea Of Love' - Cat Power
    'Dearest' - Buddy Holly
'Anyone Else But You' - Moldy Peaches
'All The Young Dudes' - Mott The Hoople

    'Scott Pilgrim'
'By Your Side' - Beachwood Sparks
'I Heard Ramona Sing' - Frank Black
'Under My Thumb' - Rolling Stones

#12. Hope you're lucky this time MM. It's one of GIO's success stories that it's got me to like Marc Almond...and quite like The Smiffs!

    Galway Girl -- Steve Earl

    *Earle

  • Comment number 18.

'William Tell Overture (Rossini, Abridged)' - Wendy Carlos

    From 'A Clockwork Orange'

  • Comment number 19.

Either of these 2 from 'The Rose' would be rather splendid, and rather unexpected :)

'Sold My Soul to Rock 'n Roll'
    'Stay With Me'

featuring the Divine Miss B (Midler) in her prime ...

  • Comment number 20.

At the risk of an O.G!

His Ipcress File score hails from the most liberatingly experimental period in film music, only Barry could choose an instrument such as the twanging cimbalom without worrying that it was geographically inaccurate. Get Harry on!

  • Comment number 21.

Assuming it's themes or songs written expressly for films:

John Barry - Ipcress File Theme

    Or

    Bowie/Moroder - Cat People

    Or

    Springsteen - Streets of Philladelphia

  • Comment number 22.

A love that will never grow old - Emmylou Harris (Brokeback Mountain)
Falling slowly - Glen Hansard (Once)
A little less conversation - Elvis (Oceans 11)
Nothing's gonna stop us now - Starship (Manequinn)
The waeary kind - Ryan Bingham (Crazy Heart)

    More to follow

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 23.

To make you feel my love - Trisha Yearwood (Hope Floats)
Chances are - Bob Seger/Martina McBride (Hope Floats)
A kind and steady heart - Peter Gabriel (Babe in the City)

#10 Well, although I am a big John Barry fan, I am bit surprised that his passing is deemed significant enough to force through a last minute GIO theme change.

  • Comment number 25.

All Shook Up - Ry Cooder (Cocktail)

  • Comment number 26.

If it is film music composers then here are a few greats.
HENRY MANCINI DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES,MOON RIVER
MICHEL LEGRANDE A MAN AND WOMAN,UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG
MAURICE JARRE LAWRENCE OF ARABIA,DOCTOR ZHIVAGO
PHILIP GLASS THE HOURS, THE TRUMAN SHOW,KUNDUN.Favourite songs that appear in movies would have to be(you guessed)Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" from the best scene in the dire movie "Love Actually",Laura Nyro's"Its Gonna Take a miracle"from "A Ö÷²¥´óÐã at the End of the World" and for original song written for a film then I would go for The Wind mills of Your Mind" from "The Thomas Crown Affair" by Noel Harrison though I would choose Dusty Springfield's seductive cover to his dry reading.Cheers ,Willie Bartke

Has anyone else seen Still Crazy - the (if you will) Rockumentary about the washed up giants of 70s music: Strange Fruit.

Starred Jimmy Nail, Bill Nighy (previewing his character in Love Actually), Tim Spall, The Big Yin & others.

Had a number of quite fantastic original tracks on the OST:
    * The Flame Still Burns
    * All Over the World
both of which could stand up in any band's discography

The movie had huge nods toward Syd Barrett, Keith Moon & Dave Lee Roth, and also gave its name to the Fratelli's 1st album.

And speaking of Rockumentaries, you can't *not* do some Tap. I reckon
    * Spinal Tap - Stonehenge or Gimme Some Money should be perfectly playable on teatime radio.

Laurens Van Der Post was a big man in 50s television with his programmes about the Kalahari bushmen. Along with Hans and Lotte Haas (ocean exploration), Armand and Michaela Denis (safaris)and David Attenborough he recalls an era when you could switch on the box and learn something. Ah well, back to Davina McCall.

now attenborough, there's a name to conjure up brighton rock.......i'm just going to watch the dvd before reading the book before going to see the new version set in the 60's(!).........maybe it should've been called 'brighton rocks' (sic)........from the trailers i see a few scenes perched on beachy head...........now there's a theme.........songs that take you to dangerous places.
