TUESDAY

After spending years and a small fortune buying my favourite albums on vinyl, I purchased a car with a radio/cassette player. Many tapes later, CDs came on the scene. Realising I was being ripped off by the recording industry, I resisted for a while but finally succumbed. (A bit like my honeymoon).

Where do I begin?

Well, I've bought lots of stuff many times over.

I think there are two albums that I have ended up purchasing at least three times: The White Album and Songs For A Tailor (Jack Bruce).

It would be kinda nice to hear something from The White Album that's less obvious:

Sexy Sadie - The Beatles

One of John's biting and sarcastic songs recording his disillusion with his Indian guru (The Maharishi).Having had them all carry out weeks of Transcendental Meditation to enhance their spirituality, it turned out the Maharishi had been trying to get off with Mia Farrow. John wasn't impressed - history doesn't record what Miss Farrow thought about it but married Andre Previn thereafter. The song, Dear Prudence,on the same album was written for Mia farrow's sister, who had accompanied Mia on the superstar spiritual quest

Tickets To Waterfalls - Jack Bruce from Songs For A Tailor.

it's hard to think of this track rationally:probably my favourite track of all time.It just seems to contain the whole world of musical possibility in two and a half minutes. It would be a great start to the year to hear this on GIO

Oh and

Tickets To Waterfalls has the most amazing lyrics, written by Pete Brown but containing some nice Glaswegian colloquialisms 'lost the place' and the superb line: "you never saw anything glittering, but you had to melt it down"

I can only imagine that this theme will make me seem foolish. I had all the Bowie records and also on tape (for discussion purposes up to Scary Monsters).

I then bought the RCA CDs. 1985 issue.

I then bought the Ryko Disc CDs. 1990. Extra tracks.

For sone you could get Au20 and:or SACD editions.

EMI 24 bit remasters which drop the extra tracks.

Japanese remasters in replica vinyl sleeves.

30th anniversary editions of Ziggy, Alladin Sane, Diamond Dogs with bonus cd gathering together an odd unreleased track and some rarities.

Remastered, resequenced, remixed editions of David Live and Stage.

Super deluxe edition of Station to Station with extra live album, vinyl of both, DVD 5:1 surround sound.....

So amongst all this any gems? Of course:

Moonage Daydream, remix from Ziggy 30th edition is absolutely stunning and a real treat for anyone who appreciates the Guitar playing of Mick Ronson.

Golden Years, from the recent Station to Station boxset, new Harry Maslin mix presents the whole album in stunning quality and you will hear things you didn't before.


Worth all that money over the years....??

I second SG's excellent theme suggestion, I had suggested medely's before but doubt that would fill a show...

I think, if any of you came to my house, I'd need to borrow several people's record collections just so I didn't feel embarrassed by how little I actually own. Still have a working record player and a handful of LPs, chucked all the tapes a while back and didn't replace very many of them - some were pretty much worn out with use I'd loved them so much at the time, but somehow - dunno, time to move on..

however, a few I couldn't leave behind and replaced on CD:

#2 I too have three copies of The Beatles aka The White Album (vinyl / CD / ayechoons). My choice would be Helter Skelter

I also have three formats of Pink Floyd's The Wall plus a CD of the live version. I'm looking forward to the 30th anniversary concert at Manchester in May. What about Mother, Nobody Ö÷²¥´óÐã or Run like hell for a change from the usually played tracks?

I've bought albums twice....vinyl/cd or vinyl/digital but have never bought digitally something I own on cd. Only cassette album I ever owned was Sade / Diamond Life and cant remember how that happened. Anyway the only album I've bought three times was Bat Out Of Hell on vinyl, picture disc and cd. So I'll second scotch's Paradise by the Dashboard Light to get those cars out there rocking.

#12 some day I'll remember to read the rules properly. So no, I've never bought anything 3 times over and the only way I'd have both a bought download and CD is by buying a track first then the CD.

#8 Adam I am a bit of a Bowie John too as I have all the Bowie albums and most of them in different formats.

I have done the same (and more) with all the Roxy and solo albums. You can see an example of this on all the albums pages on my website.

Glen, John love the pictures, certainly cannot match Glens reel to reel of the The Beatles album. And RJ does not let us down yet again!

Easy one for me... the only album I have on viyle, tape and CD: Billy Braggs 'Talking With The Taxman About Poetry'.

The ultimate soundtrack of my student years; wore out the tape on my Walkman; replaced it on CD some years later; and (don't ask me why, but) picked-up a vinyl copy in a charity shop only last week... maybe someday I will have a deck to play it on!

'Ideology'...still SO relevant 25 years on!

#17 I'm not having a laugh, I've fallen foul of the rules on several occasions. There was the one about hospitals but excluding doctors and nurses for instance. Anyway, I think this theme is discriminatory since it's biased towards those with money to burn. Yes, thank you, my flu is much better, you can tell from my sunny good humour.


I have a perfectly good working record player and though I don't use it much there is something quite special about listening to it. No doubt all in the mind.

RoxyJohn, that is an astonishing archive and amount of work - simply superb. Glad you received the recognition you deserve from the band.

Not to mention quadraphonic, minidisc, eight-track, 5.1 and cassette.

I've got the 78s, but don't have the songs in other formats. Hey, maybe if I download She Wears Red Feathers I can play too?

At the age of tapes I had a nice collection of good old staff all catalogued and in complete order.
And now I mostly buy downloadable music for listening on my iPod and there were lots of tracks I bought several times. Somehow cannot get used to put all staff I buy in one folder.

There's no comparison with the obsession/devotion* demonstrated above but the only album I have owned in multiple formats is 'Waking Hours' by Del Amitri. I had this on cassette and played it to death so decided to invest in the CD version.

Anything from this album would be good to hear but particularly 'This Side of The Morning'.

#31. I have 'The Old Music Master' by Hoagy Carmichael on 78 and CD, Have Bill Haley on 78 and CD but not sure exactly what song (Rock around the clock, Shake Rattle + Roll or something)...the 78s are in the fabled cupboard and I'm too hungover to look!

#16 I am of the same opinion - I've only ever bought something I've had in a different format if they've been misplaced. Having moved around as much as we have, it has been known to happen. And then there are all those "gatherings" my sons have had over the years when CDs have mysteriously gone missing.
Don't think claiming Queen and Elton John tapes replaced by CDs will endear me to much of the blog, but those are the only two I have knowingly bought twice, if not thrice.
and there we go, right on cue...!

As Queen has been played, I'll have to suggest something from Elton and Bernie's works instead. By no means the favourite (too many to call any that) from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, just one that rarely gets a play. Fantastic song.

#40 and #41 There's plenty good Queen and Elton John tracks, just not the ones they usually play but 'Movie' would be good to hear.

Anyway, surprised nobody's mentioned the classic free giveaway flexidiscs. Just remembered i had George MacRae's It's Been so Long on flexidisc. I also have it on digital. Get it On!

#45 Depressing reading, that obituary. It's not often you really get to see what's behind the genius - some folk overthink and over-analyse and fail to see what they have to offer, even when it's abundantly clear to others. If it's not clear to them, though, I guess all the adulation doesn't mean anything.

I always thought right down the line was his best song. Just something about it.

I remember someone once asked me to play it as the first dance at their wedding in the watermill in Paisley and I thought what a great choice. Always loved it since.
