What a brilliant theme,Bryan!So many goodies that I dont know where to start so I may as well start with the best(imho).it didnt take Joni Mitchell long to bite the hand that feeds her and she says as much in the great "For The Roses"..."In some office sits a poet and he trembles as he sings and he asks some guy to circulate his soul around".It's a recurring theme as witnessed in the more famous "Free Man in Paris"and much later in the brilliant "Taming the Tiger"but it would be great to hear "For The Roses".Other acerbic swipes at the "starmaker machinery behind the popular song"are the brilliant "Even a Dog Can Shake Hands"by the great Warren Zevon,"Have a Cigar"by Pink Floyd(brilliantly sung by Roy Harper)and the extremely funny (and filthy,that's out then!)"Packard Goose"by genius Frank Zappa.

Apart from being a one hit wonder he is also a real industry all rounder. Was a journalist with melody maker, and played with the hollies everlys Olympic soul runners Albert Lee Van Morrison housemartins and Paul McCartney and Alan Parsons.

He's written hits for Olivia Newton John and the pasadenas and produced albums for the Kane gang and dexys.

I met Pete Wingfield once before an Albert Lee gig at the Ferry. He came up and spoke to us. I didn't recognise him and thought he was trying to steal our seats. He was very pleasant and is a great interpreter of Floyd Cramer.
