Aynur Dogan, Kurdish singer from Istanbul, sings Kece Kurdan, a song telling Kurdish women to unite, to rise above any past limitations on what they may do, and to show young Kurdish women what can be done with courage and ability.

There is no better song to celebrate 2011 International Women's Day with, and if you listen you will realize that even if you do not understand Kurdish that she is celebrating and telling young women - all of them, not just Kurds, as she herself has made clear in interviews - just do it, girl!

#22 - A side to Madmac I've never seen. I think I like it!

We should not forget the women who were murdered in their thousands in the name of religion and those who are still being killed for "crimes" that in this country would hardly register as "sins." Female circumcision is still widespread and women in many parts of the world are no better off than slaves. We should give thanks that we live in this place at this time.

Gaie, Jack did 'Born Under A Bad Sign' on Saturday night - with the brass section, it sounded awesome.

Well, I don't know - it's too big a question, though I did eat them sometimes - late, after a night on the town when I was going out with Miss Brighton. Still, it's an excuse to once again request the magnificent Somedays by Paul McCartney.It takes courage to decide to play keyboard and sing backing vocals with your superstar husband when you've no real track record. The irony is that their voices harmonised fantastically (listen to 'Ram'). This is a song about Linda, her illness and the fact that we all have to face mortality, no matter how strong we are - the 'one dance you will do alone' as Jackson Browne put it.It's touching, appropriate.

And then, there's that other champion - of conceptual art, risking riducule at the time and decades ahead of Tracy Emmin and Damien Hirst.

Yoko Ono - A Walk On Thin Ice

I don't think we've ever had Yoko on GIO, but this is a great track and gives a clue as to the direction of Lennon's work if he hadn't got plugged - if I'm pushed, I'd have to concede it's the only track of Yoko's I like, but it is a stoater.

I have strong neuro-associations to this song.Heard in a certain context, it can still reduce me to emotional turmoil. I regard it as the most powerful and honest expression and exposition of emotional pain ever recorded. A work of genius, but unintentionally so, I guess - to convey this intensity of feeling is presumably because it is all too real.

It is for me.

A few contenders for inspirational women in music would have to include Nina Simone whose selfpenned "Mississippi Godamn" and "Young,Gifted and Black"crystalised the feelings of disenfranchised black people in the 60s.Much as I love Aretha, the idea of hearing "Respect"for the gazzilionth time doesnt excite me much especially when in its original form by Otis Redding respect was demanded FROM the woman.!I youtubed Aretha last night and homed in on an amazing live peformance of "I Dreamed A Dream"at Clinton's inaugeration.Absolutely stunning unlike her lacklustre performance at Obama's.Lastly, (you guessed maybe,)Joni Mitchell's finest hour, in my book.A song written about one female pioneer by another."Amelia".Exquisite.Cheers Willie Bartke
