I'm not sure quite why I'm even posting this , but..... one of my netballing buddies and longtime sparring partners was in that crash today. She didn't make it. GRCH (Strathclyde Suite) A national treasure. If you don't get it, persevere. He's worth it.


'Locomotive Breath' - Jethro Tull

GRCH (25th. Anniversary Tour) I've been to some really duff Tull gigs over the years, but this one was perfect.


'If You Don't Start Drinkin' (I'm Gonna Leave)' - George Thorogood & the Destroyers

Armadillo. For sheer energy and enthusiasm, George is hard to beat. He claims to front "The Best Bar Band in the World". He won't get an argument from me.



'They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore' - Kinky Friedman

King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. Another perfect gig. Backed by Ratso and Little Jewford, Kinky was magnificent. The audience responded appropriately. A magical evening.


'Angel from Montgomery' - Bonnie Raitt

GRCH. Accompanied by Phil Cunningham on accordian, she had the audience spellbound. What a woman! (I am rather fond of her).


'Seduced' - Mary Coughlan

Old Fruitmarket. What a woman! (I am rather fond of her).

This week will be heaven for Scotch - Git, a week of his pin up.

Thus far, I've not persuaded Allison to play anything I've suggested on her appearances on the show so far, or anectdotally,not much from the blog has appears when we have guest presenters.

Is it that my blogging peers and myself are are a group of musical intellectuals demanding tracks of great gravitas or that Allison is a lightweight pandering to the vox pop texters in particular?

Probably neither, I guess having all this information streaming in on a live broadcast must be difficult to prioritise and you are doubtless most influenced by the person who shouted last. I always understand how fantastic our hero is when I hear guest presenters on GIO.

So, whoever is producing this week - can you remember we have a blog running here - my blogging peers do go to great lengths to come up with interesting suggestions for the show.

I've got zillions of live gigs to think about but here's one that I have always had great fondness for - and the track is a live recording!

Paul McCartney & Wings - Greens Playhouse- Glasgow May 1973

Whatever else divided them, John Lennon really admired the way that McCartney came out of the biggest band in the world, formed a new band, bought a transit van and took to the road. Me too. I didn't witness the transit van tour, but this was the first recognisable post Beatles tour and it was small, warm and itimate - the likes of which we would never see again.

At the time the Beatles assets were all frozen, so making a few quid meant issuing syrupy silly love songs like 'My Love' as singles. It's one of my facinations about Macca - how they manage to choose the least approprate tracks as singles is baffling - but there are real gems on his solo albums and this is one of them.

The Mess was originally the b side of My Love but can be found as a bonus track on the updated Red Rose Speedway album.Henry MacCullough on blistering form.

Worth hearing, I think.

Burns Night - February 9th 2007. A concert by the Silencers in the ABC, a tribute to Cha Burns, one time guitarist with the band, who was by then dying of cancer. All the (then) current and past members of the band were there, and Cha himself playing his last gig. The atmosphere was absolutely brilliant and the most requested song was

Cellar of Dreams - The Silencers

but if you can't find that then the opening track was Painted Moon.

Cha said it was the best day of his life - and he died 6 weeks later.

Kicking off with something to eat in a well known cafe full of rock memorabilia at 7pm. We can book the tables 30 days in advance if we are sure of numbers.
It's Festival time and there's plenty late trains running or failing that taxis back (5 to a taxi shouldnt be too sore). Adam is coming from Rio and has promised to buy everyone a drink that shows up. Open to all bloggers and GIO lurkers who fancy a wee swally....copy and paste the list and add your name if you'll be interested. I'll repaste the list in July before I book the tables in case there's any changes.

The Low Anthem at Òran Mòr this year - people talking their way through gigs seems to be a real problem now though it beats me why you'd pay good money to have a chat while a band does its best to burst your ear-drums - so it was a delight to be at a concert where the audience gave not a sound throughout TLA's several quiet, atmospheric songs, but responded more than enthusiastically at the end of the song. A great concert and a talented band

Ghost Woman Blues - The Low Anthem

can't leave out Runrig - so many brilliant gigs and the one in Greenock Town Hall heralding a new era for us, with Bruce Guthro at the helm. However, ye cannae whack Barrowlands and last December I had one goal in mind while laid out with a sore back - to be on my feet and fit to jump up and down on the 18th. Snow fell, trains were rumoured to be off, but we made it, son, daughter, daughter's boyfriend and me and it was an absolute cracker.

Running to the Light - Runrig

and by way of nothing, I bought Joe Bonamassa's Dust Bowl album last week. What absolute stormer. If you liked Gary Moore you'll love this. And the sooner he gets his ass to Glasgow the better.

Sorry for this overly long list but could not help myself! I actually think I am only skimming the surface but hope I have managed to suggest a few of the less well recognised venue as well as the obvious ones!

King Tuts – The Bible Graceland

One of the best gigs I have ever been to was The Bible at King Tuts where the band really did run out of songs to play. More recently the Lost Soul Band was a fantastic gig.

Barrowland – The Waterboys

I think the first band I saw at Barrowlands was The Waterboys at the height of their pre Fisherman’s Blues magnificence. Came home soaked through but happy.

Cottiers

Imagine a bill of Eddie Reader, Boo Hewerdine and The Cranberries in a converted Church. Not bad! Boo Hewerdine and I Remember / The Ship Song

Inverness Ice Rink

Was this the worst venue in Scotland. Quite possibly but The Clash, SLF and Siouxise still managed to put on great shows. The Clash one was after Strummer had gone missing!

Eden Court theatre

Oh yes The Smiths, Mozz with flowers and hearing aid. Hand In Glove.

Edinburgh Playhouse

I have seen a few great gigs at the Playhouse, David Byrne, Tom petty, Lou Reed, Kid Creole, Jackson Browne and Springsteen are the most memorable.

Clyde Auditorium

Not a favourite venue at all, far from it. However Leonard Cohen was out of this world a gig I will never forget.

The Pavillion

Robert Cray was good, 10,000 Maniacs supported by Indigo Girls was better. Who was that poor soul that Natalie Merchant took on stage to sing Michael Stipes part on campfire Song.


Apollo

Where to start? The Clash, The Skids, The Jam, Kid Creole, ABC, Toyah, Numan, Peter Gabriel, Dire Straits. Real soft spot for the Skids but the Jam and The Clash really knew how to put on a great gig.

I saw U2 here many moons ago but my favourite had to be Big Country gig 4 July 1983. Fantastic band and Chance would be my choice of song, preferably the live version from that gig!

The Garage

I saw the late great Kirsty McColl here and she was just brilliant, better than I had hoped. Days would be good.

Old fruit market

A recent gig really stands out, love this venue and Teddy Thompson was infinitely better than Martha Wainwright. In Your arms!

Theatre Royal

Colin vearncombe in his Black guise played an absolutely superb concert here in his only major tour. Should have been a massive success. The Big One.

Just going to mention a singer I've seen a couple of times recently who is a fantastic live performer. Great soul/blues voice...great band (even better when the horn-section is included). Puts you in mind of Otis Redding or other Stax acts. I took a friend who is very picky about her music to the gig at The Arches, fully expecting her to be a bit disappointed after my having raved about how good he is...not at all...she thought he was wonderful and will absolutely be going back to see him the next time he comes over here.

Murrayfield August 1987 U2 supported by Runrig, The Pogues, Love and Money and The Mission. Superb weather and great atmosphere, magic.
