21 today...

Bryan Burnett | 20:05 UK time, Wednesday, 20 July 2011

Our batteries could do with recharging after a super-busy 'electricity' show tonight. Hope you enjoyed the music and the lessons in space exploration that came fro Norrie, Miss B and our friends at NASA. For me, Bonnie Raitt was the highlight of tonight's show although Danger High Voltage was a great way to kick off the show.
Following on from last week's theme of 'songs that were number one when you were born' Eric Zoha suggested we do 'songs that were number one when you turned 21'. I'll start you off with Dr and The Medics doing Spirit In The Sky - and if you think that's dodgy I am just glad I wasn't born prematurely or else it would have been The Chicken Song from Spitting Image.

    Oooh first again

No matter .. Just see what was no 1 when I was 21. What's tomorrows theme?

  • Comment number 2.

    *seen

  • Comment number 3.

    THURSDAY

    Nay, nay, and thrice, nay!

I do, however, have a theme suggestion. Song titles and artists which include the words MAMA and/or PAPA, e.g.

'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' - The Temptations

'Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys' - Willie & Waylon

I commend it to the House!

Do You Really Want To Hurt Me - Culture Club

  • Comment number 5.

Much as I'd like to request whatever's No 1 next week, I'm afraid it was...

Paul Young - 'Wherever I Lay My Hat'

  • Comment number 6.

3I am pleased to report that No.1 when I was 21 happens to be my favourite track, from my favourite album and by my favourite artist.

David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes

  • Comment number 7.

Nice one norrie. Your birthday seems to change from week to week.

Seconds for #4 even though i dont want to hear it

Dont you just hate themes without the ability to put in a good old fashooned list.

    Good theme mr git

  • Comment number 8.

Who'd have thunk it? The number one spot on my 21st birthday sampled my Morricone request from last night.......
Beats International Dub Be Good To Me
I'd much rather hear the Harmonica Man, truth be told.

  • Comment number 9.

    #1 - that bad?
#5 - extend to include friends and family for a better deal

  • Comment number 10.

The blistering hot summer of 1976 was dominated by one song:

Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee although looking back at the charts for 76 ther were some stunning records about at the time.Pity I was immersed in Prog like music..

I spent a few weeks in Toronto (which was very clean and had an integrated transport system that worked) where it wasn't quite as hot as it was back home.

Because it was the summer and everyone was away, I didn't celebrate my 21st until October, by which time If You Leave Me Now - Chicago was number one.

This tweeting lark isn't working out. I had two shouts ignored tonight, particularly 'Satellite Of Love' which I was keen on. When there was uproarious celebration for the intellectual brilliance of the same shout from a texter, I tweeted to point out it had been reqested on the blog 18 hours earlier. It didn't help anything.

Perhaps my new standard tweet greeting of 'mon cherie' is, as feared, being misunderstood - but I feel I have to try to entertain my solitary unknown follower.

Of course, maybe every show is now so busy (which is great) that expecting anyone to pay attention to the likes of us is too great an expectation.

Henri, adam was batteting on about the music of 76 recently. Perhaps we should have that as a long hot summer theme

    is this true?

    cheers frae the dale

  • Comment number 15.

#10 I like both of those suggestions! and don't take anything too seriously - if your song was played and you never got a mention, bear in mind there are plenty of other listeners who have never had a mention - you have AND at least you got to hear something you wanted to hear when they played what you asked for.

#12 paolo - should I bring some ID then?? ;o) I doubt the bar staff will have any problem, somehow!

  • Comment number 16.

this ole house aaaaagh.......time for some creative thinking.......

    Mama's Boy ~ T. Ramones
    Papa Joe ~ King Brillo
Fujiyama Mama ~ Wanda Jackson "one and only time they GIO they failed to acknowledge the shout" ;-(

  • Comment number 18.

'Pancho and Lefty' - Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard was top of the US Country charts!

  • Comment number 19.

The reason scotch is being so bashful about his 21st is cos it was a bigger landmark than all ours put together. Something to be proud of so go on bryan play his 21st song
Here in my heart / al Martino

thanks M-D - I wasn't complaining, I get afair crack at the whip - just an observation, and plainly, begining every tweet with Mon Cherie isn't the action of a man who is completely right in the heid :-)

My one follower has now withdrawn, as I suspected he would..

#21 - you don't have to be right in the heid for this programme - they seem to understand that normal joes alone don't make for an interesting show. But I'm a sycophant, so I would say that. ;o)
as for Twitter - aye. Well.

  • Comment number 23.

Wish I'd been born a week later & I could have asked for Rat Trap

  • Comment number 25.

  • Comment number 26.

The Housemartins - Caravan of Love

Made a pleasant change from Christmas or novelty records on my birthday.

  • Comment number 27.

When I discovered what was number 1 the chart released just before my birthday I went to the chart day after in the hope for something better but it turns out that Spitting Image's 'The Chicken Song' was number one both weeks ......... but then salvation:-

Bryan Ferry + Roxy Music's first ever Ferry/Roxy combined compilation was number one in the album charts for 5 weeks and either side of my 21st was week 4+5.

Would love Get It On to play 'Sign Of The Times' from that album.

    J.O'B.

#23 tell me more, tell me more

  • Comment number 29.

    #27 Ferry at his best.

  • Comment number 30.

Ah! there's a shock - my solitary follower has been replaced by two new followers, giving me a total of four (two heritage followers form my first attempt in 2009).

    Yipee!

I'll need to get the deliquent up to my office to take a snazzy looking photo, like the one our hero has, and start addressing the world with 'Ah, Mon Cherie' and very short comments since that reduces the available characters by about 14.

I gave up on twitter in 2009 because even Stephen Fry sounded inane - but hey - this could be fun! Let's give it a go.

  • Comment number 34.

Nena - 99 Red Balloons Go By

Or for Mr Goldberry's 21st: Culture Club - Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?

  • Comment number 35.

It is just as well the theme isn't 'What Was No.1 When You Were 22?', as I would have to request the Shakin' Stevens classic - 'Oh Julie'...and that would upset some folk!

April 9th 1971 T.Rex were number 1with "Hot Love".Boy,I hated that song.Sounding just like there previous dirge "Ride A White Swan".Tony Visconti's sawing strings and Flo and Eddie's endless coda of lalalala did my head in.That same year I was at a rock festival in Weeley ,Essex and top of the bill was..T.Bloody .Rex!Also on the bill was King Crimson and Barclay James Harvest complete with orchestra.Yes, Prog Rock had truly arrived.Same year Carole King's "Tapestry",JoniMitchell's "Blue"and James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" were released and I was happy.Touching on that ,I watched a Ö÷²¥´óÐã4 doc on the famous Troubador Club followed by "Tapestry" revisited or something.Good as "Tapestry"was methinks she has been riding on its coat tails ever since.I cant think of anything interesting she has done since.Anyway,Back to my 21st NUMBER 1,GET IT ON(Oh no,another T.Rex. song):o) Cheers,Willie BARTKE
