Single albums...

Bryan Burnett | 19:58 UK time, Thursday, 14 July 2011

Katy Perry recently managed seven but still lags behind Michael Jackson's nine. I'm talking about the most singles taken from one album. Jackson's tally came from BAD and it's only when you are reminded that there were only ten tracks on the album that you realise what an achievement it was to get so many hit singles from the one album. Alternatively you might be thinking what a money grabbing rip off it was to release nine out of ten tracks as singles.

Either way, Friday's theme celebrates those albums that were packed full of hits. the ones that were so good that every track could have been a single. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Amy Winehouse's Back to Black spring to mind for me.What are your top single spawning albums?

All seven tracks on Bat out of hell were released in various edits on 45 as either a sides or b sides.

Two out of three ain't bad / Meatloaf

    Jeff Buckley - Grace

"Grace" "Last Goodbye" "So Real" "Eternal Life" "Forget Her" "Hallelujah"

to my amazement no single release of Lover You Should Have Come Over. Play that.

    FRIDAY

I nominate 'Sheet Music' by 10cc. 3 singles were taken from the album; 'The Wall Street Shuffle', 'Silly Love', and the wonderful (and previously played on GIO) 'The Worst Band in the World'.

'Somewhere in Hollywood' might be considered a tad long, but not by me. After all, it doesn't prevent 'Bohemian Rhapsody' being played.

Every track on the album is a stoater. I would be delighted to hear any one of them, but if you're forcing me to make a choice I'll opt for

    'Baron Samedi' - 10cc

    Glory Days??

Must have been a single Adam because there was a video. Thanks for that!

  • Comment number 9.

If the theme includes albums which could have had every track as a single then there is no doubt that:

    Del Amitri - Change Everything

    Would count.

"Sometimes I Just Have to Say Your Name"

I see Bryan has not specifically forbidden Greatest Hits albums.

Will this be a show where they promise not to play anything we haven't heard a million times already?

    We should be telt!

previously on the blog #86 @ ya paul h.

re tawny pipit.......this bird was hopping about the garden for a few hours in late may coming and going and over the years i've tried to become more aware of unusual birds.....i had quite a close up view of this bird and i couldn't place it.i had the books out with many pictures of pipits and still couldn't get it to fit until i turned to the back of the book to the very rare species , and there it was.......tawny pipit.
the local manual had no previous recordings, ever.
the rspb were sceptical............however the local rspb officer was less so......on discussing it with him he said that there were quite a few south easterly winds in the spring/early summer so it was possible it had blown in from southern europe.
previously in the garden......corncrakes ( a brood of 12)...........short eared owl......white tailed eagle flying overhead.......a peregrine falcon/rock pigeon chase...the falcon screaming with rage at losing the prey..............harriers.......merlin.....snipe.......and as many waders as you can shake a stick at..........and more recently in the attic..........starlings who have colonised the chimney and parts of the roof!!

meanwhile the theme of birds continues with the album.............

'mr. tambourine man'....................and its arguably not even the best single on the album....................
so how about 'chimes of freedom'........................but any from the album would do.
i still think the byrds are a vastly underrated band...........a lot a radical sentiments in their songs

BTW, they `clackers` could be his `boleadoras`. Gauchos use them for tripping up running coos.

#22 Julie great album as is his Repeat When Neccessary lp.

  • Comment number 26.

Thanks for the welcome Paulo, Henri and folk. It's a bit daunting being 'new kids on the blog'. Usually only time to send a quick email before tea so you'll probably not hear much from us. We're up in Wester Ross so blog meal on 6th not an option - plus hearing bloggers names regularly on 'Get it On' is a bit like knowing the characters in a favourite book. Meeting up would shatter what we guess you're all like!

  • Comment number 27.

#26 Nothing daunting about it. All you need is skin like a rhinos hide to get through the initiation. Wester ross is fine. We'll all come there. What you cookin that night?

  • Comment number 28.

Talking Heads - Fear of Music

I Zimbra, Cities and Life During Wartime were singles but it would be great to hear Memories Can't Wait or Heaven

Pretty Persuasion or 7 Chinese Brothers please ☺

  • Comment number 30.

My Best Friend's Girl and Just What I Needed from The Cars debut album are played but the rest of the album is criminally overlooked. Please play You're All I've Got Tonight.

  • Comment number 31.

Kings of Leon - 5 or 6 releases, none of them 'Closer' which is my favourite track.

  • Comment number 32.

There were five singles from The Bends by Radiohead but not the title track or (Nice Dream). Either of these deserves a play.

  • Comment number 33.

#19 - Adam - Stop playing with your boleadoras! 3 weeks to rehearse!! LOL!!!

    ;o)

Guilty - Barbra Streisand ~ The title track please!

    :o)

  • Comment number 34.

Follow up theme? The tracks that were singles only (probably now on a compilation but there are loads of great examples).

eg Bowie - John - I'm Only Dancing

The Jam - News Of The World

Clash - Whiate Man (In Hammersmith Palais)

    etc.

Ah well, that would be a Beatles night!

the fab four were not in the habit of including singles on their albums as they felt it cheated the public - mind you with that songwriting talent, they must have been among the very few who could afford to take that stance, commercially or artistically. Consequently, Beatles albums tend to be short on singles except where the tracks were germaine to the film soundtrack.

In fact,in the UK, 'With The Beatles' 'Beatles For Sale' Rubber Soul' 'Sgt Pepper' 'The White Album' and 'Yellow Submarine' have no singles released from them at the time.Astonishing - there were singles from these sessions, but they were released separately from the album.

An excption was the American releases which differed somewhat and included both Magical Mystery Tour and Hey Jude as albums with no UK equivilent - these were made up of singles to 'fill' the vinyl.

Magical Mystrey Tour includes 'Hello Goodbye', Strawberry Fields Forever' Penny Lane' and 'All You Need Is Love'

Any of these will do, but everyone knows the Beatles canon of singles so well it really would be tremendously refreshing to hear one of the many that so easily would have been a chart topper if anyone had been enthuiastic enough to be bothered to release it:

Hey Bulldog - The Beatles (which may have been subsequently released as a single)

"""the fab four were not in the habit of including singles on their albums as they felt it cheated the public""""

An idea for a theme (th eopposite of tonight's)

    Albums with no singles:
The first 2 Roxy Music albums didn't include singles either but they released singles at the same time as the albums, 'Virginia Plain' and 'Pyjamarama' respectively.

  • Comment number 42.

Another idea for a theme sort of based on tonight's theme, songs from UK hit albums that were released as singles abroad but not in UK.

    For example:
    ROXY MUSIC
Do The Strand most regions except UK
The Thrill Of It All USA
InThe Midnight Hour Portugal and USA

I remember back in '73 Johnnie Walker making a clown of himself on radio 1 by playing 'Pyjamamrama' and then stating it was from the new Roxy Music album 'For Your Pleasure' (which he had been listening to the night before).

    It wasn't on my copy.

Hmmm.. we raelly can't forget Steve Wonder's magnificent seventies albums...

Innervisions had 'Living For The City' 'Don't You Worry Bout A Thing' 'He's Mistra Know It All'..... bit not 'Higher Ground'?

Any of these would do - especially Higher Ground...

    regardez youse

    henri

  • Comment number 47.

Just checked - Higher Ground was a single in the States. De facto, it's a single form an album, and qualifies! Hooray!

  • Comment number 48.

    Sinead O'Connor - 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got'

Last Day Of Our Acquaintance - such a powerful song...gets me fair 'overcome with emulsion'!!

    The Emperor's New Clothes

There's always Nothing Compares 2U...the best known one but actually a song I never tire of...but it'd be interesting to hear one of the other 2 for a change.

  • Comment number 49.

Hmmm....songs by pop stars that weren't good enough to be released as singles. Can't wait.

Come On Come On is the fourth album by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Seven of its tracks became Billboard Hot Country Singles hits in 1992, 1993, and 1994. They were, chronologically, "I Feel Lucky" at #4, "Not Too Much to Ask" (a duet with Joe Diffie) at #15, "Passionate Kisses" at #4, "The Hard Way" at #11, "The Bug" (a cover of a Dire Straits song) at #16, "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" at #2, and "I Take My Chances" also at #2. The album topped out at #6 on the Billboard Country Albums chart.
