Dining room ditties...

Bryan Burnett | 20:07 UK time, Thursday, 11 August 2011

Look out your apron and recipe book and dust down your crystal glasses bloggers, as tomorrow on Get It On you're hosting a Come Dine With Me style dinner party. Which pop star would you like to invite round, and what would you cook?

Tell us the name of the artist, the song you would like them to serenade to you across the dinner table, and the dish you would serve up.

It should be a bit of Friday night fun and hopefully we will get an interesting musical menu as well.

I would invite Morrissey and serve him a starter of Chicken Liver pate followed by a 10 oz sirloin steak with a garnish of ham and chorizo. I think it's disgusting that he kills vegetables and plants for food. They live and breathe and reproduce and I don't think they should be harmed. Plants are our friends!

  • Comment number 3.

By the way the guy at the traffic lights beside me tonight was listening to Get it on.

I only know cos he was keeping perfect time to the drummin of Glad all Over on his steering wheel!

Capt Ramius will be on in a minute with a list of at least 20 other songs that have the same beat.

  • Comment number 6.

#2 Paolo - he managed to persuade the restaurant opposite the Horsecross Theatre (and the restaurant within the theatre, too) not to serve any meat the night he played there. And then subjected his audience to a video backdrop of abattoirs and animal cruelty as if they needed that graphic nudge out of their blind, thoughtless meat-eating ways. He's without doubt passionate and sincere, but he took it just too far when he stated that what happened in Norway was nothing compared to what happens in MacD's every day. Sorry, Morrissey - you're not going to win any converts with that one. So, paolo, he's all yours - good luck, but dinnae be too harsh.

I'd quite like to invite Robert Smith round to swap make-up and hairdo tips and ask him to bring his pal Spiderman to sort out dinner. Oops, that would be me on the menu.
    The Cure Lullaby
Maybe Morrissey would be a safer bet after all.

  • Comment number 7.

#2 @ ya paolo.............he is second of 2 on my blacklist.
    dangerous and cynical.

anyway..................i'm still making up my mind who tae ask...........got a few e-mail addies here.
ah cannae make up ma mind aboot food either.........noo if it had been last monday the new chipper on gt western rd was sellin' everthin' for a quid.....that would hav been good.

i'll awa' over tae tesco's an' get some stew, mibbe.

    cheers frae the dale

Roast Potatoes with Brussels Sprouts & Broccoli.

    The highlight is;

    Colcannon! (Mashed Potatoes with Cabbage).

    And for Dessert;

    Chips & Baked Beans

All washed down with Gallons of Guinness! (Other Irish Stouts are available).

    Now, what song should I request? Mmmm..... whit aboot;

Until last Saturday I'd nearly forgotten how much I enjoy going out and socialising so I'm going for 3 nights in a row

Monday, those Kassidy lads are coming to tea. At least two of them look as if they need a good feed so we'll have
    red pepper soup,
steak pie, mash, stir-fry mange-touts and carrots,
    home-made ice-cream with toffee sauce.
Lewis's Mum rescues injured bats so what with my dad having been a vet we'll have plenty to chat about.

    Waking Up Sideways - Kassidy

Tuesday, pushing the theme guidelines a bit from pop-star, I'll be inviting Arlo Guthrie for dinner and we'll have veggie curry with brown rice and lentils followed
by #brownies. I don't suppose he'll be able to remember much about Woodstock, but it would still be great to talk to someone who was there.

City of New Orleans - Arlo Guthrie

    Wednesday, Tom Petty's coming over.

We're going to have oysters and champagne and he can have whatever he likes for breakfast.

Running Down a Dream - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

  • Comment number 13.

I'd be happy to have dinner with a down-to-earth singer, not some mega-rich 'star' with an over-inflated opinion of him/herself.

Rab Noakes springs immediately to mind.

I would serve something easy like East Neuk scallops on Stornoway black pudding for a starter, followed by lobster with mayonnaise and a touch of pepper with a fresh salad and tomatoes from my garden, dressed in a good extra virgin greek olive oil, as an accompaniment. A chilled Chablis would wash down the main course.

The chat would be about food and music.

Don't keep passing me by - Rab Noakes

#4 - Adam - apologies, but you're right: MotR is the cheese course!

    Other options:

I'd cook tapas and mexican dishes for Emmylou Harris, and ask her to sing "Pancho and Lefty".

I'd cook meatloaf for Meatloaf and ask him to sing "Heaven can wait" for my better half.

I'd serve beef carpaccio, conchiglioni ripieni al forno with my extra special onion focaccia, and tortoni with chocolate truffle cups to Steve Earle and Allison Moorer, and ask them to sing "Goodbye" as they leave.

Steak frites and ginger cupcakes for Shelby Lynne in return for "Leavin'" as she haeds for the door

Springsteen could have anything he wanted, and sing anything. My choice would be caprese salad, curried mussel soup, spezzatino di manzo alla toscana, a trio of lemon desserts, and a Scottish cheeseboard....and a duet with Tom Waits: Jersey Girl.

Pizza and chips and a mars bar - all deep fried - for "his old heart of mine" by the Isley Brothers.

Who thought of this theme? It's super.

    Joe

Since I haven't officially handed over the baton to Adam yet for next years Blog night in Rio, then as social convener you should be aware that I am taking notes in case we squeeze one in before next summer.

Gaie, we were almost comin to yours but I think Joe is just shading it at the moment.
Scotch you really need to improve your desserts.
DC can you clarify what the lobsters are carried in.

Ha, paolo, I'm just a down-to-earth gal who still cooks lentil soup and mince & doughballs - Joe's menus are fab.

  • Comment number 18.

Coffee Ö÷²¥´óÐãground followed by samplin' some Black Bush!

  • Comment number 19.

Pride - Paul Hewson - Humble pie followed by sour grapes

  • Comment number 20.

Roxy Music 'Serenade' the best Roxy Music single never released.

  • Comment number 21.

Anyone who wants to contribute to my food blog is most welcome!

  • Comment number 22.

#2 Is your choice of song Lighten Up Morrissey by Sparks?

  • Comment number 23.

@2 as the rearer of fine Aberdeen Angus beef on my wee farm I don't think Morrisey will want to come to me for tea even though they are reared on grass and I love and care for them from cradle to grave and don't pump them full hormones etc I take them to the abattior I give them a pat and say a wee prayer and then look forward to celebrating their life weeks later(after its matured) when its sitting on my dinner plate

So an open invite to any musical artist that likes good honest food and can play my piano/guitar and sing because I cant

Please organise a night out as I was away and missed the last one

  • Comment number 24.

I would like to invite Steven Lindsay for dinner. We would obviously have home made soup in a Big Dish ☺

Steven would serenade me with his plaintive voice and I could accompany him rather badly on guitar. I would make sure that he sang Kite as that's my favourite of his solo tracks.

    Mary-Doll,

    Is it September already?

  • Comment number 28.

I think it would be great fun to invite someone I know almost nothing about and go a voyage of discovery.

Recently, I've been stumbling across things I didn't really 'get' at the time ( Dave & Ansell Collins etc)and have started to become intrigued by.One of them is Donna Summer's - Bad Girls album. World class.

I've realised that in her 'Bad Girls' persona, Donna and Moi could have a fine old time to ourselves. She can tell me about making 'Love To Love You,Baby' and I can tell her about the excitement of underwriting commercial insurance.

Booze: As many bottles of decent Chablis & excellent Margaux as required.

    Dinner:
    Starter
half portion Penne Arrabiata (as you know, all great realisations occur whilst eating Penne Arrabiata)

    Main:

Scallops cooked with hint of garlic, lemon and chilli served on freshly cooked spinach with strips of mozzarella.

After that, anything can happen..Will there be a pudding?.. who cares...it'll be time to Dim All The Lights - Donna Summer

    regardez - youse

    Billy great Steven L song!

  • Comment number 30.

ps Capn I like your Blog - very good.

  • Comment number 31.

I'd be looking for someone of the same vintage to share musical reminiscences. Of course it would be nice to have someone "easy on the eye" to look at across the table!

The main course would have to be Tournedos Rossini as it's my fave :-)

To finish I would want something with all of life's essential ingredients:-

    Sugar, Alcohol, Fat and Caffeine

    i.e. an Irish Coffee

Love is Holy - Kim Wilde

    Paul from Ayr

  • Comment number 32.

    #31

La Wilde is very much of the earth mother these days (but still easy on the eye) - .

  • Comment number 33.

#15 Billy Connolly would be there to serenade the crustaceans as they were carried in.....

  • Comment number 34.

    #31-32

I'm sure all her life's achievements will pale into insignficance as her girlish heart flutters to learn that eminent bloggers consider her "easy on the eye". Welcome to 2011.

  • Comment number 35.

I would like to invite someone who had the chance to be hugely influential, play in some great bands and work with some fantastic musicians. He had a priveleged upbringing but a fairly troubled life. Going out in strange circumstances with his body stolen and set on fire by his pals. He can tell me what it was like to hang out with Keith Richards, what it was like to be in the Byrds, The International Submarine Band and the Flying Burrito Brothers, the unfluence he had on Emmylou Harris. He can tell me what it was like to record with the Elvis band.

I think the feast would need to be Southern USA food, a jambalaya, cajum shrimp and chicken. We would drink a good bottle of tequila.

But best of all Gram Parsons and I would both be kitted out in suits made for the night by Nudie Cohn. We would listen to the fantastic tribute album and I would also invite all the bloggers and GIO team (maybe better ghet more tequila):

Lucinda Williams and David Crosby - Return of The Grevious Angel

    or

The Byrds - One Hundred Years From Now (reherseal take with Gram on lead vocal)

    Good point, Eric.

It's shocking that bloggers should be drawn into this kind of stone age repartee, but wouldn't you love to have dinner with Donna?

Chaps, yes she should be honoured ;-) I saw her do some ads recently on the box and she did appear a bit more rounded than of old, but still a looker!

She did her own music show on a London based station and can talk a good game too.

She'd be welcome to bring her own fresh veg

  • Comment number 39.

Wow, I'm impressed by blogetariat and there epicurean sensibilities!I'm a hopeless cook and survive on home made soups mostly.Gaie's menu has me reaching for a big outsider to dip with.yummy.Come Dine With Me is my guilty pleasure(its not always Mongolian Road Movies, you know!)and I do remember one "Chef"was caught getting her grub from a local takeaway so here goes.I would have Joni Mitchell round then nip round to the local "Chinese Cafe" for some Dim Sum and curry and chips. As for my other guest,it would have to be Aretha,Queen of Sole but having seen that arthouse hit "The Blues Brothers"(lots of carcrashes and buildings being demolished)its a social comment movie ,innit?then it would have to be four(buckets, she's a big gal)of fried chicken and a gallon of coke and some dry white toast as requested by John Belushi! Then Aretha would blast out "Think",Cheers Willie Bartke

#31 might i respectively suggest Mr Handley that you cook it yourself to ensure your companion is fed. Theres nothing worse than expecting food and finding a door slammed shut.

#28 ah thats how you get away with it without being moderated. Subtlety was never my strong point. I would still like to hear

    narrow daylight by diana krall
And i wont mention my traditional burns night soup, my chicken in wine or my lesser spotted dessert

I'd rather watch a gladiator film.

#16 would have been rejected by a Primary 4 class as juvenile.

  • Comment number 42.

OMG, as Senga, bless her dear departed repartee would have said, I was out walking off the effects of proof-reading my son's dissertation and the iPod reminded me that Robert Plant would definitely be a welcome guest, the cuddly old so-and-so, but after I'd thought that I realised I'd left David Grohl off the list and he's an absolute sweetie-pie I would love to invite - started making up the menu and spooky or what, who comes on after Robert - Foo Fighters. So David, you're invited for some protein-packed drumming food: nettle soup; soy sauce and brown-sugar marinated tuna, stir-fried sugar-snaps and baby sweet-corn, handful of chunky chips; rhubarb crumble and taiblet for afters.

    Wheels - Foo Fighters

(sorry, canny go Nirvana or Them Crooked Vultures for the actual drumming bit)

  • Comment number 43.

Henri,Donna Summer holds a note for ever at the start of "Dim All the Lights.Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup! She's much underrated as a singer (imho)Check out the Quincy Jones produced "Donna Summer"where she does a brilliant cover of Springsteen's "Protected" and "Lush Life"Cheers,I'm off to Firhill to see the Glasgow Warriors after a hard day at the Clenny,Willie Bartke

  • Comment number 44.

#31 ha ha Paolo, even if she turned up I fear both scenarios would get me dumped!

I could just about cook the steak but the trimmings would be beyond me!

  • Comment number 45.

I cant just vask for Broooooce and bowie all the time people would get (more) bored.

Willie , padantic but in case anyone wants to look it up, the track is Protection. I believe she turned down Cover Me and so he wrote Protection instead.

  • Comment number 46.

    #38 and others.

Really Paul? Haven't seen her for a while. Did see three former Pans People when I was back this time and they were CERTAINLY still easy on the eye, even in 2011.

But it has to be Bananarama round for some stovies. Phwhoaar!

    Cruel Summer - Bananarama

  • Comment number 53.

#48 You're giving some mixed messages, Eric. Either you're a woman's champion, or you're not. Very confused. Senga's a far hotter option than Kim, Donna or any of the Bananaramas. Not because she's bonny - because she's great company and a hoot. Even if she's obviously not all she appears to be. Folk aren't as shallow as some of their comments might appear here - "been there, done that". A big mistake to take anything on face value without grasping the context.
Can I take this opportunity to apologise for getting a great bunch of folk wrong on too many occasions? I've probably totally misread you, too, Eric and you were being genuine at #48. My excuse for not getting it? I'm a foreigner. Oddly enough, I've never found that one works.
Meanwhile - welcome, Eric - good to see some brave new faces!! ;0)

  • Comment number 54.

Perhaps Eric is a Viking too!
