In the den...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Tuesday, 23 August 2011

Studio discussion tonight: Me: " I think Carmina Burana would be great..." Producer Paul: " Whaaat - singing Mack the Knife?"

Just look at what I am working with here!

Tomorrow I'll be asking you to pitch your songs in the style of Dragons' Den and our 'dragons' will vote on which ones make it to the show. Use this as an opportunity for the rarely heard bands and the ones that don't fit in any other theme. All you need is a winning pitch so the dragons just can't say no.

Never having watched Dragons' Den, I dunno what the style is. But I'll have a go!

    :o)

  • Comment number 2.

There's millions of people out there who want to hear The Rolling Stones New Faces and you've never played it once on your show. Get It On or I'm out!!!

  • Comment number 3.

Boring? Repetitive? Lacking humour and imagination? Pandering to the lowest common denominator? Digging itself into an ever deepening rut?

Get It On doesn't have to be like this.

We're All In It Together - The Pirates

  • Comment number 4.

#1 Scotch, just get them telt (TM).

  • Comment number 5.

    Ìý
What is the most effective way for a man to express eternal and undying love for his woman?

    Flowers? Jewellery? New outfit/handbag/shoes? Non.

"If you want to sayÌý I ♥ Love ♥ YouÌý put that toilet seat down."

Ode De Toilet - Brad Paisley

Producer/Dragon Mandi knows that Brad Paisley knows whereof he speaks...

  • Comment number 6.

now I'm confused - again. Does the 140 characters rule still hold?

  • Comment number 7.

You just beat me to that question Gaie. And for clarification Henri it's 140 characters not 140 lines....

  • Comment number 8.

    #6, #7

Bryan specifically said that the 140 character rule only applies to tweets.

I think the idea is to be brief and to the point with compressed concision, including economy of words in compact sentences. And that's the long and the short of it. In a nutshell...

  • Comment number 9.

Thing-Fish likes Amanda Palmer!! That's a recommendation and a half, Dragons.
    Dresden Dolls My Alcoholic Friends
Pity their best song Missed Me won't be played...........

  • Comment number 10.

    Tweet? Schweet!

How can we have meaningful discussion about music in 140 charaters? I mean, you could get cut off mid-senten

  • Comment number 11.

One of the cleverest pieces of mixing in human history: the Swingle Singers singing Bach as the backdrop to a club beat: The hugely talented and under- played :

    (a) i've never watched den's dragon also.
    (b) i've never watched the other one where you get fired. YOFYED!!!
    (c) i've never done a tweet so it is right to assume ah huvnae a clue what thon stephen fry's on aboot when he says he's no gonnae tweet any more.
    (d) point of information...is a SPACE a character. i know thats a bit of a technical question for a tuesday but it could be crucial,or not.
anyway i feel i'm a bit off task at the mo.
so its a sort o' snappy manifesto then.

cheers frae the dale ( ah um thinkin' now)

    1) It doesn’t take 140 characters to convince those that know. Joe Bonamassa’s the man. Dust Bowl please. You’ll wonder why you waited so long.

  • Comment number 14.

    2) Oli Brown – no relation – new kid on the block, 'Best Male Vocalist' and 'Best Young Artist’ in 2010 British Blues awards. Supporting John Mayall in November. You need a list of other people who’ve been associated with John Mayall? No Diggity please

  • Comment number 15.

    3) Third time lucky – Airborne Toxic Event – Welcome to Your Wedding Day – turn up the volume, arms aloft, dance around the kitchen if you really, really must.

  • Comment number 16.

    4) Another cheery wee tune to get jiggy with – Grace – the View. Can’t resist it.

  • Comment number 17.

    5) Too busy to play this on Tuesday night? Monkey – Low, good enough for Robert Plant to cover, good enough to be played on Radio Scotland on Wednesday. Music for chilling to.

  • Comment number 18.

    6) Remember Charlie Darwin? Went down a storm I believe. Time then for another by The delightful and talented Low Anthem – Boeing 737 for our friend overseas.

  • Comment number 19.

Are there another 134) gaie? ;o)

  • Comment number 20.

I would like to offer the Dragons 40% of my company which specialises in recommending new songs and artists to GIO, in return for £30,000 with which to bring my record collection up to the standards of those of norrie and henri.

  • Comment number 21.

yes, mary-doll, but I have to go to bed now so will get up early and post them tomorrow

  • Comment number 22.

    #20/ 21 Love it! I'm in!

  • Comment number 23.

#20 Gaie - you make me feel bad. I certainly hope Ive not been bragging about my record collection and if I have I sincerely apologise.

To convince our Bryan that Neil Young is all that we know he is:

Cowgirl In the Sand - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

from their album 4 Way Street (Live) - this almost certainly won't be in the library and will have to be ordered up.If impossible I'll deliver it.

norrie, of course you haven't, it was a wild guess.

The "product" I would like the Dragons to invest in is relatively new but has a proven track record, some firm orders and has some innovative marketing techniques. These include performing in the Scottish Parliamnet building, organising a Bob Dylan tribute night with many superb acts and acting as the house band, printing up your own vinyl lp and marketing it directly and even presenting on Radio Scotland now and then.

A fresh, young, exciting local "product". With your help Dragons we can expsoe this to a wider market:

    Roddy Hart - Boxes

I want for my share of bringing this product to you a single nougat, packet of salt and pepper crisps and three bottles of sauvignon blanc.

  • Comment number 29.

From the album that's thrilled me most this year:

are we supposed to present a business case for the track/artist or a musical appreciation/ merit case?.

#27 I thought you'd retired to the boudoir for the night - anyway, you got me thinking and if you can get £30,000:00 out of this lot for the equivilentof my record collection, you should be on The Apprentice - though I've never seen either. Because I run a business, I hate business programmes - apart form the one on Radio 4, 'In Business' which is genuinely facinating whether you run a business or not - The Bottom Line is quite good too.

It wouldn't cost £30,000:00 to replace my record collection.

Do you fancy a drink, I know a place called The Brink, d'you wanna go there.

To the Brink / I Am Kloot

Produced by the Elbow Boys but much better than Elbow ever were. their album sky at night is wonderful late night listening. For turning you onto I Am Kloot, I will accept an investment of a Nutty Bar, a chelsea log and a packet of pacers.

  • Comment number 35.

    #34

...and a personal introduction from Patrick Moore I believe.

  • Comment number 36.

Dragon's den? I have never watched it; me neither. I have nonetheless made two suggestions:
'Magic dragon theatre' by UTOPIA and 'The pitchman' by SAGA

[ yes there is a Canadian prog rock band by that name, you can find an article on wikipedia about them they are from Oakville]

  • Comment number 37.

The attraction of Dragon's Den.....Dragons Den?.....is that it's "REAL LIFE". It all starts with a ray of LIGHT , an idea, but you need to FEED it.....with Money!

Feed the Light - Joan as Police Woman, from the album "Real Life"

Good value at just about 3 minutes. Joan Wasser is coming to Embra a week today, help drum up some support for the gig and provide a worthy atmosphere for this under-rated artist.

    Paul from Ayr

  • Comment number 38.

    #36

I have a friend in Oakville. He's eligible to tour with SAGA.

    This theme's really catching fire.

  • Comment number 39.

as this show is about gettin money...how about "IF I WERE A RICH MAN"..from fiddle on the roof..as the dragons can usually sort out the fiddlers !!!!. or STAND AND DELIVER (cause they have to stand and deliver a beggin speech in order to get the cash..and once again the dragons usually shoot down the robbers!!!

  • Comment number 40.

Credit where it's due - last night's show was the best I've heard in a long, long time, with a distinct reduction in overplayed Klaxon material. I mean - avoiding the Monster Mash (which I love anyway) for Elvis Costello's Psycho? What a discovery that last one - I hadn't heard it before.

I also haven't heard Thomas Dolby's I Scare Myself in a very very long time, and had forgotten just how good it is, especially that trombone solo.

  • Comment number 41.

I would like to offer 20% of my listening time this evening in exchange for one of my requests actually being played for the first time ever (or £100,000).

    My request is

CREEP from AMANDA PALMER PERFORMS THE POPULAR HITS OF RADIOHEAD ON HER MAGICAL UKULELE by AMANDA FREAKING PALMER

    The reasons are

    1) This is the third day in a row that CREEP fits the bill
    2) AFP is brilliant
    3) AFP is appearing at THE ARCHES on Friday night.

It appears to me that no matter what the theme of the night is, you play the same old same old and if you don’t get your act together and play something interesting for a change I’M OUT!

  • Comment number 42.

Capn you insopire me to suggest a theme, which may have been done before:

Theme: Great musical performances on the TV e.g Bowie on Top of the Pops, Thomas Dolby on The Tube, loads on OGWT etc

  • Comment number 43.

    #42

Can't recall that theme. Sounds like a cracker, mind.

The Pogues on Christmas Day ToTP and Shane falling over the drumkit

Sting on Live Aid with Branford Marsalis.

    Tinita Tikaram on Mandela Day

Tom Jones on Live with Jools

  • Comment number 44.

Some Other Guy - The Big Three - Links Liverpool, Leiber and Lounge Lizard

  • Comment number 45.

    hello Dragons

tonight i'm here to offer you a 'once-in-a-lifetime' proposal ... asking for didley squat ... in return for a 100% show of willingness to play this suggestion

it is with interest (and no little delight) that i note you're business requirements:

    i) use this as an opportunity for the rarely heard bands, and
ii) ones that don't fit in any other theme

matching this exact criteria, i am therefore delighted to be able to present this proposal to you, safe in the knowledge that you should find it difficult to say no

i therefore do accept you're offer of 0% finance, and 100% willingness, thereby complying with your own specification

accordingly i very much look forward to listening with you when you give the discerning GIO listners an equal share in

'Magnetic Baby' by Semi Precious Weapons (one of the most exiting acts around)

Thank you for this opportunity, and for your resulting endorsement of the aft neglected.

  • Comment number 46.

Why are the Semi Precious Weapons leaving?

    We should be telt.

  • Comment number 47.

    #41

    Thing-fish must be conserved ...

would gladly offer additional capital injection to this intrigingly sounding proposal ...

  • Comment number 48.

    #46

something to do with the number of beer cans that are usually jettisoned their way! ...

  • Comment number 49.

Dragons... this product has nothing to prove having released 9 albums in the last 20 years. Covered by artists such as Joan Baez and collaborated with with the likes of Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky. Never played on GIO but requested several times... A huge crowd puller at festivals all over the UK... this is probably your final chance to acquire shares, cos after this (no doubt failed) attempt I am going to shut-up about him.

    I give you...

Richard Shindell: Are You happy Now?

  • Comment number 50.

The passing of Nik Ashford hasn't really been properly acknowledged on GIO.

The passing of talented and well known people (Lennon, Amy etc) is usually accompanied by a temporary hike in their sales - therefore, although Nick & Valerie were prmarly songwriters, their work is likely to be highlighted in the coming weeks.

These Dragon types are always up for a quick punt - indeed, it is the short term nature of business objectives that has done most to destroy the results of our creativity: James Dyson can testify to this.

Therefore, any dragon worth their salt would be itching to get behind:

Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross

This is obvious, but that doesn't make it a bad shout - I've listened to other versions, this is still the best - and I commend it to the juke box jury.

Why wasn't the theme 'Juke Box Jury'?

    reagrdez youse

    henri

  • Comment number 51.

Because nobody under 60 has heard of it.

  • Comment number 52.

Did Jerry Leiber get a mention?

  • Comment number 53.

    #52

Nope - although I think Elvis was played on 'don't get it' night.

I never did get Elvis either, though I acknowledge that if there had been no Elvis, there would have been no Beatles... and then where would we be?

So Jerry deserves his place in the Dragon's short- term -ist strategy.

    regardez - vous

  • Comment number 55.

#42 a timely reminder, norrie - this is on tonight - surely worth a listen.

  • Comment number 56.

#55 Thanks gaie - that looks like a really good programme.

  • Comment number 57.

Surely tonight's theme is at odds with the statement "You choose the music", when we only suggest the song and the panel can reject it?

What???? You mean it's always like that??????

  • Comment number 58.

    Theme suggestion - white goods!

  • Comment number 59.

    #57

You're right. They choose the music. Isn't this what our fathers fought in the war to prevent?

  • Comment number 60.

This is turning into a poor man's X-Factor

  • Comment number 61.

Yep thats confusing me. When did dragons den give three yesses.

Mandy mandy you should be on the stage. Rejecting barenaked ladies cos 'we play them a lot and want to hear some new stuff' and then in the next breath saying yes to queen. Brilliant!

  • Comment number 62.

We're probably just hearing what usually goes on when the records are playing.

"Townes Van Zandt - I'm not playing any of that ****."

  • Comment number 63.

    7) The Only Way is Up please, since we've now hit rock-bottom

  • Comment number 64.

Dear Dragons, you are in breach of the Trades Description Act. I quote from your own advertisment:

"Use this as an opportunity for the rarely heard bands and the ones that don't fit in any other theme"

How come the Proclaimers are on?

    Again?

    >8-D

  • Comment number 68.

    # 64 I'm with you on this one. Just a handful of the songs played would fit that description. Maybe it was just a bit too scary to leave it so open to stuff they perhaps never play, for whatever reason. :o(

  • Comment number 69.

    Chilli-willy!!!

    Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 70.

Boring? Repetitive? Lacking humour and imagination? Pandering to the lowest common denominator? Digging itself into an ever deepening rut?

    Yes.

  • Comment number 71.

#69 too much information! I thought he was talking about the (mostly) manly habit of exploring the nostrils. Lesson learned - always wash your hands before AND after handling .... stuff.

  • Comment number 72.

Maybe he was. However, that statement (innocent or not) gave me the biggest laugh of the day!

  • Comment number 73.

Even if some of the songs were old-hat but OK, I couldn't enjoy them for annoyance. Not a single new song played unless you count the Madonna ****. Ridiculous pretence of yes/no voting stuff. An insult to the discerning listener!!

  • Comment number 74.

At least there's only one hour tomorrow, Gaie

  • Comment number 75.

DC - I forgot the ;o) .... agreed, again. Eye-wateringly honest and unexpected!!

#73 Something wasn't quite right tonight, for sure. ( ;o) ) But there will be other nights for the stuff that should have been played. Won't there?

  • Comment number 76.

Of course there will. They just won't be in our lifetimes.

  • Comment number 77.

may as well no' bother then. I'm sure you won't be able to resist, eric. ;o)
