Good Morning Scotland...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Friday, 16 September 2011

Our week of different musical genres was a great success and actually the one that I thought might be the trickiest was the busiest of the week and the most well received. Post Nirvana alt rock was described by some as the best edition ever of Get It On. I got a nice tweet from a guy who was 'dancing around his kitchen like it was 1995'. It's a decade we don't feature much on the show but it sounds like we should.

Monday's theme is 'All Day and All of The Night' as we feature artists singing about different parts of the day. From Delta Dawn to Midnight at The Oasis, get in touch and let me know about your Perfect Day.

Is this different from Paolo's theme suggestion of specific times in songs?
If it is, is "Midnight" then considered a "part of the day" and not a specific time?

which reminds me, assume DC you knew about Ö÷²¥´óÐã4 Pink Floyd Night last night, though daresay it's been on before?

    Hunners of country songs can fit the bill but I'll try and keep it under control;

    In The Morning - Razorlight
Early in the Morning - Vanity Fare
The Working Hour - Tears for Fears (well that's as long as anyone should have to work)

When The Sun Goes Down - Kenny Chesney
American Saturday Night - Brad Paisley (come on, didn't play Brad on Country night even though he was the poster boy for the show)

Midnight Summer Dream - The Stranglers
    The Nightfly - Donald Fagan
    Tequila Sunrise - Eagles

and then back to morn with
How D'Ya Like Your Eggs in the Morning - Dean Martin & Helen O'Connell

I guess that covers 'just another day' for me.......

Was Norman Watt-Roy playing in Wilko Johnson's band?

  • Comment number 24.

Good though the show was, I suspect you Blues fans must have had a Disco Tex moment when the Mighty Wah was played.

    #11
    I'll investigate

Were your records chosen with Henri and the Fish in mind??? Even one there that suggests they might have got a lift home from SG in the wee small hours.

Norman Watt- Roy was the star of the show as far as I'm concerned. I could have watched his fingers moving up and down the fretboard all night. I know I'm a Jack Bruce fan, but quite honestly, you'd think the man and the instrument were physically conjoined and moved as one - and move they did.It was like watching a wild dervish perform a kind of guitar mating ritual, a breathtaking musical performance.

This sense of the surreal was only enhanced by Wiko. From the small raised area at the back of the ABC you couldn't see his legs, so he appeared to move about like Davros, the half- man, half - Dalek from Dr Who. Moreover, he does that insane staring thing ike the guy out of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.I believe Wilko is actually a bit nuts anyway and it wasn't difficult to tell. Great performer though.

A really happy gig, great fun and two encores.

Disappointingly, I didn't get to meet Thing Fish - there was no one who obviously fitted the description in the hall - though if I'd seen him on Sauchiehall Street later I wouldn't have been surprised.

Brad and Angelina wasted their money making a zombie movie in George Square - why did no one tell them about Sauchiehall Street on a Friday evening? Mind you after watching Wilko and Norman bouncing around the stage, the histrionics out on the street seemed almost normal.

    regardez - youse

    #20 yep and it has.

I watched it through pausing only to post on this blog. Indeed I pondered requesting Floyd's Two Suns in the Sunset but I actually prefer Maggie Bell's singing Sunset Cowboy

Here DC, Gilmour's got a shed he needs gettin rid of. Would look good roond your back door.

  • Comment number 29.

#24 hahaha! As if I'd cast such aspersions on SG's no-doubt luxurious limo.

  • Comment number 30.

#26. HH I'm so very very pleased you were impressed with Norman. He's one of my musical heroes...Wilko's played gigs in Edinburgh twice recently and I wish I'd gone to see him. I'll definitely go along next time.
BTW...did you see if he's had his teeth fixed yet?

  • Comment number 33.

well that's interesting, Adam - some of them are glorious, some glamorous and some neither. I guess that's really exciting/really expensive, depending on how rich a Killers collector you are. Anyway, thanks for looking it up, I'm away to look out my own copy no doubt to find I'm sadly option 3.

    May Morning - Runrig

Meadhan Oidhche air an Acarseid - Runrig

  • Comment number 35.

is it just me or is midnight the most popular time of day to put into song?

anyway roughly in the correct order for a good night out.....

    Twilight Cafe - Susan Fassbender

Midnight on the Bay - Neil Young

    Wednesday Morning 3am - Simon & Garfunkel

    Paul from Ayr

  • Comment number 36.

Are songs which just mention time allowed? 3am? 4 in the morning?

  • Comment number 37.

#26 Henri - I looked out for you throughout the night but didn't see you. I agree NW-R was the star. Good gig but Wilko needs a new Lee Brilleaux as his voice is too weedy for the blues.

    See next time maybe.

  • Comment number 38.

    Rialto - Monday Morning 5.19

  • Comment number 39.

    Baxter Dury - Afternoon

  • Comment number 40.

Two for the price of one:

    Bombay Bicycle Club - Evening/Morning

  • Comment number 41.

Before the dawn - Judas Preist

  • Comment number 42.

Well after a week of diversity and ecleticism - can we keep it up?

    Dawn:

Perpetual Dawn - The Orb electronic ambient and dance music doesn't feature much on GIO - time for a rethink?

    Breakfast Time:

Breakfast in Bed - Dusty Springfield great soulful response to the world's most overrated luxury.

    Morning:

New Morning - Bob Dylan forgotten classic, deserves some airplay.
Sunday Morning - Maroon 5 unusually jazzy from this bunch, but we love our jazz on GIO..

    Afternoon

On Saturday Afternoons, 1963 - Rickie Lee Jones a huge fan of the Orb, is our Rickie.

    Evening:

Evening Falls - Enya I had forgotten how beautiful this is..

    Sunset

Sunset - Nitin Sawhney Epic stuff, the track I'd love to hear on GIO.

    Midnight:

Midnight Rider - The Allman Bothers The Paul Davidson Trojan Reggae version is better still, but doubtless not in the library..

Midnight At The Oasis - Maria Muldaur Klaxon tune, but hey, it's fantastic..

    Night:

The Night Comes On - Leonard Cohen story telling at it's very best..

The Night - Franki Valli one of the best bass lines ever?

Strangers In the Night - Engelbert Humperdick alt disco version of this guitar classic

Saturday Night, Sunday Morning - the River Detectives

    and to sum up

On Days Like These - Matt Munro

    so that's electronica,soul,folk, jazz,singer songwriter,new age, world fusion,blues,reggae,pop,disco,and a crooner....lets keep it eclectic...and play Nitin Sawhney

    regardez youse

  • Comment number 43.

For a little light excentricity, how about....
Mad Dogs and Englishmen (Out In The Midday Sun): Noel Coward

or a couple of minutes the sublime Nick Drake could close off the show nicely...
    Day Is Done: Nick Drake

  • Comment number 44.

Big second for Paul's Twilight Cafe suggestion, great wee song, sadly a one hit wonder I think.

If we're thinkin eclectic hows about

    5.15 - The Who

Good Mornin' - Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor from the wonderful Singing in the Rain OST
.........moses supposes his toeses are roses

Cowboy Junkis - Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning

  • Comment number 46.

Disagreeing with Gaie on the choice of Wilburys songs:
    * The Traveling Wilburys - Last Night

Disagreeing with Scotch on the choice of singer:
    * Dave Gilmour - The Dimming of the Day
(assuming you can't find the sublime version on the soundtrack release to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Bringing It All Back Ö÷²¥´óÐã series on Irish music, performed by Richard Thompson, Mary Black & Dolores Keane, Ö÷²¥´óÐã Records c.d., CD-844, U.K., 1991)

    Also
    * The Fratellis - Everybody knows you cried last night
    * Billy Bragg - Debris (...a Sunday Morning Market)
    * Clapton - Wonderful Tonight
    * Lennon - I'm Stepping Out
Woke up this morning, blues around my head...
    ...
I'll be in before one... or two...

Given last week's jazz fest, I don't see any danger of you playing
    * The Gotan Project - 'Round About Midnight
but it is a great version of the Miles Davis classic.

There's great mystery and speculation around Susan Fassbender - but it seems it all ended very tragically and far too young. Great keyboard player apparently.

I remember reading that the lady suffered from depression before she passed at an all too early age.

There was another record release credited to Fassbender - Russell (Kay Russell) who worked with her on Twilight Cafe.

    Anyway...here's more:

Help Me Make It Through The Night' - John Holt's version

My latest new discovery of an old-ish record...James Kirk of Orange Juice's s solo album 'You can make it if you boogie'...'Houston, Texas' opens with the words "woke up this morning".
