Welcome to the 主播大秀 Nature UK blog

Jeremy Torrance web producer Jeremy Torrance web producer | 15:19 UK time, Monday, 17 May 2010

We used to pop up in spring and again in autumn, but nature merrily perseveres whatever the season and we thought we should too. So out with the old Springwatch and Autumnwatch blogs and in with the new Nature UK blog.

First of all let me introduce myself. I'm Jeremy Torrance, the web producer for this blog and website. I'll be sharing your stories, answering your questions and chairing your debates, as well as keeping you in the loop with all the happenings across the 主播大秀's natural history output from the UK. There's a lot of fun that goes on behind the scenes and plenty of interesting people with amazing stories to tell...

But enough about me. Over in Springwatch Towers the office is a-buzz with activity and there are loads of exciting things coming up for you to look out for...

This week the Springwatch Season begins with three one-hour Springwatch Specials on 主播大秀 TWO from 8pm. Chris Packham kicks the season off with Springwatch Signs of Change, an investigation of one of the biggest issues of the day - climate change. Simon King takes us on an urban adventure in Springwatch City Living on Wednesday using his field craft skills to explore wildlife in our inner cities. Then Gordon Buchanan discovers the riches of our marine environments and shows us more of his dramatic encounters with killer whales in UK waters in Springwatch High Seas this Thursday.

flickr-faves-grab.jpgOur famous webcams will go live next week (we're hoping Thursday) bringing you an intimate observing point into the daily lives of some of our UK wildlife. The much loved messageboards return very soon for you to catch up with your fellow Springwatchers and share your spring stories from around the country.

Springwatch live is just around the corner. Chris and Kate will keep you updated with everything that's been happening with our wild stars from 31 May every night from Monday to Thursday for three weeks.

And the fun continues onto Red Button and online with the and our Springwatch Photo Club on Tuesday and Wednesday nights respectively after the main show. And of course Springwatch Unsprung returns with its own slot on 主播大秀 TWO on Friday nights.

Keep up-to-date with everything that's happening now by following our live tweets from and tell us what you've been up to using the tag. And don't forget to check out the incredible photographs and share some of your own in the .

Hello Jeremy - Nice to be able to put a face to the name now!

Will Spring Watch Unsprung be live on Fridays? Hope so.

Cant wait for the show to begin!

Hi natureDeirdre, how kind of you!

Unsprung will be shown 'as live'. This means it will be recorded live on Thursdays after the main show and then broadcast on Fridays. That way we'll get the same feel as before.

    Hi Jeremy,

I'm really excited that the webcams are going to be up and running next week. I was wondering whether it will be possible to monitor them on the iPhone? I use the app 'Live Cam' and would like to know whether I would be able to add the cameras (using a method like this: [Unsuitable/Broken URL removed by Moderator]) so that I can observe them from the phone.

... Unless Springwatch have got their own iPhone app comming out?

    Thanks!

@iliauk We're working hard on improving the webcams. We'll keep you posted on developments.

Hi Jeremy - I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that a new dedicated website has been set up, to run throughout the year. Springwatch is my favourite 3 weeks of the year, and the webcams keep me glued to my computer - can't wait! But it will be lovely to know that when it finishes, the website will still continue. Great stuff.

There is only ONE Nature Uk that has been up and running since April 2008

If you want to join our friendly nature forum please do :-)

I'm sure not related to the weather, but there has been a bird singing outside my house for the last few evenings (haven't seen it yet) but part of it's tune is exactly like one of the lorry-reversing warning noises that I've heard in the pub car park across the road!! Wish i could record it. Anyone know which bird it is most likely to be? I assume song thrush but.....

As Daisyjan has said if you want Nature Uk come to the original we are mad about wildlife and unlike the 主播大秀 we do make the time to reply to any query or qualm Personally.

If you wish to see the real Natureuk, check out Daisyjan's link.
We are a friendly bunch and have an extensive range of topics. We all love nature and are always posting lots of great photos.

Why settle for the imitation when you can belong to the original
    Natureuk.

I am looking forward to the live webcams, last year they were brilliant, a year round blog is great too, just a great shame about the ID theft ,the other fella just ignored all the comments so Jeremy PLEASE take us seriously ,the 主播大秀 have upset many genuine nature loving people over this issue, maybe YOU can help to sort the mess out.
Please please change your name and don't pinch ours!
A lot of hard work went into making NUK the great forum that it is today .

Whilst watching Simon King tonight, and with my windows open, there was a piece on blackbirds. Suddenly, there on the roof was our resident blackbird who was very interested in the recording! He didn't leave until the piece had finished!
    Brilliant!

Hi Jeremy,im looking forward to your webcams and blog.It would be lovely if you could respond to the complaints from members like myself about your chosen name.

  • Comment number 13.

Hi all, for those commenting about the name, Tim, our Executive Producer, responded on 17 May on his previous post: /blogs/springwatch/2010/05/announcing_the_new_nature_uk_b.html

We have also sent an email to one of the admins of the forum.

  • Comment number 14.

Well the original Nature Uk have not received have received an e-mail!

Can you say who you sent it to? It wasnt me!

  • Comment number 15.

I'm really looking forward to Springwatch again this spring, I've enjoyed the last two springwatch specials, looking forward to the last of the three tomorrow night.

I must admit though that the 主播大秀 has really gone down in my estimation by carrying on calling their new blog Nature UK, regardless to the fact that they were stealing the ID from a forum that have had that name for two years.

Why has no-one responded before now, and as far as I know there is no email!! so what are you talking about.

As Daisyjan wrote, could you please confirm as to who you sent it to please.

Well I say - what a to do !!!! (as my Nan would have said)

I do have to congratulate Nature UK (the 'original') for a great marketing exercise :-)

I hadn't heard of you - I have now. Did you know that if you use a popular internet search engine for Nature UK you are top of the list - a well used active site then.......... bless those little bots eh!

On the other blog someone suggested Naturewatch - good name, but do a search for that and you will see why it was not chosen......

    I don't see it as stealing - this site is somewhat different from yours and you have some years under your cyber space belts anyway, maturing and evolving in an alternative way ( I see no forum on this site.....) - I would take it as a compliment, I expect the 主播大秀 thought that an association with you would not be a bad one since both sites will compliment each other don't you think? Thousands of nature sites out there because Nature is such a well used word sometimes for all the wrong reasons :-{

Hmmmmm maybe a forum is a better format than the present 主播大秀 messageboard system????? Hmmmm maybe peoples should be in discussion quick smart?????....... just a thought.....

See it as a growth opportunity - and all the best to you.

  • Comment number 17.

Thanks Barney for your comments.... I like the one about marketing exercise! And yes we DO know we are top of the list..... yay!

We have found the e-mail now and watch this space....

  • Comment number 18.

A big thankyou to everyone who has supported the original Nature Uk during this unfortunate problem.
We all felt very strongly about it as a lot of hard work has gone into making ours the fantastic forum that is today.
We came number 5 last year in the top 50 forums in the 主播大秀 countryfile magazine.

We will get back now to what we enjoy doing enjoying the wildlife and sharing our photos and nature in general.
If thats what you enjoy pop in and see us sometime.

Oh, now I get it - thanks to Chris Packham's, 鈥淪igns of Change鈥. When it鈥檚 cold,鈥 it鈥檚 weather - and when it鈥檚 hot,鈥 it鈥檚 climate.

But I鈥檓 going to miss him so. As a wildlife presenter he had a rare gift, but he鈥檚 surely destined for far bigger things now that he鈥檚 assumed the role of climate science arbiter. Is the Nobel prize too much to ask for the man who has succeeded where all the professionals have failed for so many years - in establishing, beyond question, that climate change is man made?

I have a question for the team.

I鈥檝e a nest box with camera and I noticed something regarding the feeding habits of the parents.

Particularly when the nestlings were quite young the adult would come into the nest with a caterpillar. Instead of giving it to one beak it would 鈥渟hare鈥 it round without actually breaking it up. Why are they doing this? Would they be squeezing the juices out of the caterpillar into each beak?

Here is some footage of it @40 seconds the male enters and puts the same food into three beaks!

Hi guys, don't know if this is the right spot but can I whinge please?

Whilst SW is great it lacks in one aspect.

What about us folk who live in flats and have no gardens to speak of and are not allowed to hang bird feeders from our windows. What can WE do? It is always assumed that everyone has a garden(not everyone has a computer either)and can do all sorts of worthy stuff but some of us have no gardens in which to be worthy. Please do not forget US!

For those of you who believe the pen is occasionally mightier than the sword, in our attempts to help wildlife and the planet, you might like to know about the Earth Vision Nature Writing Contest. It's held annually, with a closing date of October 15th. Just google it. No-one else is using the name - yet!!

I'm not uderstanding the moderation and display process. I posted a bit of a rant yesterday and it seemed to have appeared straight away on the blog. Today it is no longer visible. Was I looking at some preview site, or is there a delay in the moderation process, or has my posting been taken off for some reason? I was registering my frustration about Chris and Kate not mentioning the names of the species, but unhelpfully merely refering to the BIRDS, the CHICKS, the ADULTS .... etc, but never what type of birds.
