It's April Fools for tonight so songs about fools, jokes, tricks are welcome.

Despite being caught out by at least one newspaper April Fool the most fun I've had all day has been listening to a David Essex CD which Paul ordered from the library but has no memory of why.

Just the mere mention of David Essex can still make women of a certain age go weak at the knees. Looking at this pic of the twinkly eyed rocker in his peak shows what the Ronan Keatings of this world have got to live up to.



He did get talked into recording some pretty naff things over the years though as this CD shows. It does include Tahiti ( number 8 in the charts apparently!), Myfanwy and the bizzare Me and My Girl (nightclubbing), the 1982 hit which had David going all new romantic and futuristic.

I will hang on to this CD though as one of the great themes suggested last night was artists named after place names and surely there's a space for Mr Essex in there...maybe not Myfanwy though.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with tonight for 'Prison' songs. I am sure we will get some good puns in alongside the sensible suggestions. My favourite puns from April Fools night were the texter who asked for "Ooh Ahh Jester Little Bit" and Alec on the e-mail who suggested something by "Gerry Laughferty"!

Tonight we return to one of the most popular and best loved themes. It will be manic though. At 2pm today we had 18 'must play' songs for a 12 song show....and that's before we open up the phones and texts for your forgotten Scottish gems.

Last time around there were some great memories from folk. Listeners talked about long forgotten gigs at venues ranging from the legendary Apollo in glasgow to The Copper Beech pub in Aberdeen. Both venues, like so many of the bans who played there, have long bitten the dust.

There were some great personal memories as well - DC told of the time the Beatstalkers came to stay at his mum's boarding house in Cellardyke.

I haven't planned this week very well. I should have eased gently into the week with a simple theme for a Monday. But, after taking it easy on long songs night, I'm thinking tonight will see me working twice as hard. If we play 11-12 songs of 4 mins in a normal show that means tonight we should be able to get through 22- 24 tracks!

Bob Millar in Glassford suggested a show in which the singer gets his/her message over in two minutes or less. Short and sweet is what we鈥檙e looking for tonight. I've just done a search on my computer and come up with: Born In A Storm ( 1:34), From Me To You ( 1:57) and We Will Rock You ( 2:01 ...but with a bit of editing I could probably get it down to under the two minute mark). Friendship is tonight's theme. Now that could be straightforward songs about close pals and the value of friendship. It could be songs that remind you of good friends, or in Michael Jackson鈥檚 case, a song about forming a close relationship with a rat! Mind you, we鈥檝e all come across people we thought were friends but turned out to have rat like tendencies. We鈥檝e got a couple of those kind of tunes on tonight as well.

My suggestion was going to be Me and Paul, Willie Nelson鈥檚 鈥榣ife on the road鈥� epic about him and his drummer Paul. Co-incidentally 鈥榤y Paul鈥� is also a drummer. Which reminds me of a great old joke I saw reprinted in the paper this morning :

Paul, incidentally, is very proud of the fact he has 139 Facebook friends ( which are not like real friends obviously!) but he鈥檚 not nearly as popular as Tom Morton who has 146.

I am not sure if anyone has written a song about these online relationships. I鈥檓 fairly certain that being poked, writing on your fun wall and being chomped by a zombie would not inspire Carole King to rewrite her famous anthem..

It鈥檚 London Marathon again on Sunday. For everyone running, and especially first-timers, it will be a day they will remember for the rest of their lives. Alongside Harry from McFly, a team of Maasai warriers and 40,000 members of the public, Get It On listener Gavin Harvie will be using the marathon as a way to recover from an attempt at the world record for treadmill running.

鈥淐urrently the WR stands at approx 430miles, and we hope to beat that by some distance,鈥� says Gavin. 鈥淣ot only that, but as soon as the attempt is finished (successful or not), we are belting round to run Flora London Marathon as a "cool-down"!! This will mean almost 70miles each in approx 48 hours!!鈥�

Although I won鈥檛 be running this year, I will be soaking up the atmosphere as one of the commentary team at the finish line. It will be like doing the marathon but without any of the sore bits- well maybe a sore throat after six hours of gabbing.

Paula Radcliffe has been sharing her marathon tips with and top of the list is a bit of advice I shall definitely be following:

"In the week before a race, I try to stay away from germ areas. I keep disinfectant wipes in my bag for when I have to use a supermarket trolley or something like that."

Now, you may think Paula is being a bit freaky, but if you have trained hard for three months the last thing you want to do is mess it all up by catching a cold off some manky trolley.

When I was training for London last year, I wouldn鈥檛 even let Paul touch the e-mails as he was feeling a bit sniffly. I printed out my own 鈥榩ersonal鈥� copies鈥k I now realise that was maybe taking it to far.

Hygiene will be uppermost in my mind over the weekend as the hotel I am staying at on Sunday night was featured on this week. Not in a good way.

It was part of an investigation into some dodgy cleaning practices in posh hotels. As some of the shortcuts included using dirty pillowcases to clean glasses and using the same sponge to clean the lavvie and the teacups, I will definitely be taking some of Paula鈥檚 hand wipes to London to give the room a good going over鈥�

We're halfway through the show as I write this and really getting in the mood for a night out. All that's missing here is a bottle of cider and the smell of the really cheap hair gel you used to get in Boots. Can't remember what it was called though. Any clues?

If you were wondering why I sounded a bit 'husky' tonight it was the down to the fact that yesterday I was commentating at the Flora London Marathon for a total of 8 hours. That's a lot of talking if all you are doing is chatting in a pub, but when you are screaming encouragement, shouting support and generally talking in an excited manner that puts a lot of strain on your vocal chords.

Hey at least all I had was a sore throat. All over London this morning you could see the tragi-comic sight of marathon runners hobbling around and struggling to get down a flight of stairs.



From my birds-eye view at the finish line I saw some amazing sights- from the team of Masai warriors dancing down the mall in their shoes made from recycled tyres, to the marshals reaching out to support some wobbly-legged runners who looked like they weren't going to make the last 20 yards.


I was proud to watch so many of my pals and club mates set new personal bests. I saved a special cheer for Get It On listener, Gavin Harvie who was part of a team who set a new world record for 48 hours of treadmill running at the weekend and then decided to use the marathon as a cool down run after their record breaking efforts.

Great to think that one of our community of listeners is a world record holder.

This has been one of best themes for ages. It has been tremendous fun in the studio and the tunes have been brilliant. Such a rich mix of things been suggested.

It鈥檚 music on TV for tonight. That could be theme tunes that are worthy of a play, pop songs used as themes for TV shows, or songs that have reached a wider audience after being featured in a TV show.

In the old days, the best a band could hope for would be background appearance in the Queen Vic jukebox. Now with shows like Gray鈥檚 Anatomy and The OC featuring acts like KT Tunstall and Death Cab For Cutie, TV dramas play an important role in breaking new bands and relaunching the career of established ones.

Just like in the movies, the right use of a song in a Tv show has the power to really move people. For me, two standout examples of this are Beth Neilson Chapman鈥檚 Sand and Water in ER and Hallelujah in The West Wing episode where CJ鈥檚 boyfriend got shot.

There have been some vintage tunes from the 60鈥檚 and 70鈥檚 suggested as well. Glen Miller has asked for the theme for the Six-Five special, the pioneering music show for teenagers.

That got me searching for clips online and I came across a cracker of Edinburgh Teenager Jackie Dennis who had a hit with a songs called 鈥楲ah Dee Dah鈥� back in the 60鈥檚. It鈥檚 wonderful viewing and he comes across as a 15 year old tartan trousered Jarvis Cocker. Definitely one for our next 鈥榥eglected Scottish gems鈥� show鈥�

Last night we took the show to Dundee to our Soundtown school, Baldragon Academy. It was a good experience and I was really happy with the way it went.

I had been thinking for the past week about ways to involve the pupils in the show. Initially the idea was to have them pick the music, but my fear was that we would end up with an hour of indie bands enjoyed by teenagers but end up alienating our core audience which is.... well not teenagers anyway.

My 'brainwave' was to have the sixth year pupils engineer and produce the show and give Paul a night off. Well not so much a night off but have him just stand around in the background drinking tea and watching while someone else does all the hard work. ( If I was a cruel man I'd be tempted to say "No change there then!" but I'm not and he does work incredibly hard every other night.)



Besides, Paul got the worst job of the night which was to tell me at 6:59:50 that the texts and e-mails were down and we would possibly doing a live request show without any requests! For our junior radio staff it was a lesson in the most difficult part of the producer's job ...handling your presenter.



Thankfully, with a combination of our technology, the school's computer, a teacher's mobile broadband and Paul's hotmail account we were able to get access to the all important texts and e-mails, which were expertly delivered by the team from Baldragon.



The Soundtown project has been a big success with several of the pupils applying for media courses after getting hooked on radio in the past year. I wonder if they would be so keen if they saw the less glamorous side of the job.

After the show, Paul and I were booked on the 7:50 back to Glasgow. Dundee's best known chippie was shut and the only eating option near the train station was a kebab shop. He stood guard on the CDs while I nipped in to get the tea.
He did make me ask for a receipt for 艁2.50 in a kebab shop though which drew some funny looks.

I'm also willing to bet that eating pakora on a bench at the train station is not how our Soundtown pupils imagine we glamorous radio presenters round off our evening.

I thought I should try and be more organised this week as I was late getting the themes up online last week and I know some folk like to work on their ideas over the weekend. It's tremendous the effort that some people put into this show.

Anyway, here they are, and don't forget the extra long show on Thursday. There is some good news on that front which I hopefully should be able to reveal on Thursday.

鈥淲hy is Bryan dressed like an English football hooligan on the front page of the Radio Scotland website?鈥�, wrote one of our producers in an e-mail to Paul the other day. It was prompted by the picture below.



The simple answer was that I was working at a sporting event and that鈥檚 what you wear. Either that or I could have kicked down his office door, sprayed 鈥楳ilwall鈥� on his desk and vomited in his waste paper basket.

I actually like my 鈥榯rackie top鈥� and whilst I wouldn鈥檛 wear it to go out clubbing ( well I wouldn鈥檛 be going out clubbing anyway i suppose) in the right circumstances it has a certain appeal.

It seems that nowadays tracksuits, hoodies and trainers are what you wear when you are aged 12-18 then you get into normal clothes before regressing back to polyester sportswear at a later stage in your life.

The interesting question that arises from the 鈥榟ooligan e-mail鈥� is why didn't he just e-mail me and ask?

This happens all the time in the 主播大秀. Paul will often get e-mails from other producers asking if it鈥檚 possible if 鈥楤ryan could read this out on the show鈥� or 鈥楧o you think Bryan might be able to come along and help us with such and such?鈥�.

We call it the 鈥楧oes he take milk?鈥� syndrome. Sometimes I think being a producer is a bit like working in a care home. It鈥檚 your duty to look after the residents/presenters and to make sure all the difficult tasks are taken care of, but still make them feel like they have a degree of independence.

On the bright side, at least if I do get put into 鈥榮hady pines鈥� I鈥檒l have an unrivaled collection of polyester leisure wear to slip into.

We have just been lining up Blondie's Hanging On The Telephone to play on tonight's 'office' themed show only to find that someone has gone into 主播大秀 Radio Scotland's digital library and savaged it!

They have only gone and chopped off the telephone sound fx from the start! Why, it's like cutting the police sirens from the start of White Riot or losing the footsteps and car door thud from Love Is The Drug. It's an outrage that's what it is!!!

Paul, has been dispatched to find the proper copy on CD while I fire off an e-mail to the Director General....

Good reaction to the brass show last night. So many things we didn't get the chance to play inc Love doing Alone Again or which was asked for by many people including Big Gordon in Leith.

" I saw LOVE in 1969 and was privileged to see them several times in 2003,4 and 5 when Arthur Lee and his band had a revival. The most memorable were a couple of gigs were when they did the whole of 'Forever Changes' with the Swedish Strings and Horns backing them. Sadly Arthur passed away in 2006. 20 years and almost 40 years later The Damned and Calexico did great covers however LOVE's version is the mammy and daddy. Out of interest Rolling Stone rated 'Forever Changes' at 40 in it's Top 100 all time albums."

The most controversial song of the night was Concierto De Aranjuez which had been asked for by Brian in Pitenweem as it was the song that his wife had walked down the aisle to.

Brian mentioned the version from the film Brassed Off ( "concert for Orange Juice!") was his favourite but that Miles Davis had also done a version. We plumped for Miles. Not a good idea according to Fiona on the e-mail:

"Just heard the version of this song played on your show and I really have to disagree with you. Miles Davis (?) was RUBBISH! It sounded like a first attempt by the local primary school orchestra and I fear you might have severely damaged that otherwise gorgeous tune and others enjoyment of it! If you really want to hear a superb version of it listen to the arrangement as played on the "Brassed Off" CD, recording number 5 - only then will you be fit to comment on how wonderful it really is!"

Fiona, if I had a choice I would stick with the brass band version, but I thought it might be interesting to play the Miles Davis version. Like a lot of jazz, I thought it certainly lived up to the interesting billing, but would I want to listen to it in the bath? Probably not. I do have the Brassed Off CD and in fact I bought it specifically for that song as I thought it was so moving in the film.

Just polished off the contents of a Tupperware (other plastic containers are available) box to fuel up for the two hour marathon tonight. It will be a chance for once to make a decent stab at getting through all the material that comes in. If it all goes well tonight then I should have an important announcement to make about the future of the show.

顿辞苍鈥檛 is the theme tonight and there is no shortage of material. Lined up for possible inclusion is everything from Talking Heads to Tommy Cooper!

Last night鈥檚 two hour show was great fun to do and thanks to everyone who kept the calls and texts coming all the way till eight o clock. The great news is that from Monday 5th May, the two hour Get It On will be a permanent feature in the Radio Scotland schedules.

It鈥檚 going to mean a huge difference to the amount of stuff we get to play on the show so I won鈥檛 have to spend as much time apologising for all the things I didn鈥檛 manage to play.

I should also say thanks to all the Get It On listeners who have posted comments and sent texts and e-mails to plead for a longer version of the show. Just goes to show that your voices have been heard.

Let鈥檚 get into training for the two hours then鈥�

Here's another week of themes for you. Let's hope it's a rich and varied as last week. We were out the door with stuff, but the good news is that this time next week we'll have two hours to catch up with the tunes we don't normally have time to feature. Can't wait...

My keyboard is waterlogged with tears as I type this, because this is going to be Paul's last week on the show. What else could we do for a theme but break-up songs. It's the sound of the blues that will fill the airwaves tonight. BB King, Etta James and John Lee Hooker could all feature so why not get int ouch and get down with the blues...

In between standing at the window watching the spectacular thunder and lightning, we have been gathering together break-up songs for tonight鈥檚 show. Start texting with your favourites at five past six.

Break up songs seem to fall into three camps ( and some are just plain camp) which are sad, empowering or just angry.

However I realised listening to a bunch of back to back break up songs that the common ingredient is power drums - you know the Eastenders dum,dum,dum, dum drum sound.

Maybe 'power drums' could be a future theme. Let me know what you think?

鈥淭onight's theme will be a really interesting one for us; completely different from the usual.鈥� So said Angus from Skye in his e-mail. He was right of course, but perhaps Angus was referring only to the music.

It felt strange for me, but that was more to do with not having Paul in the studio. We worked on this show together for a long time and as it was just the two of us, we ended up working very closely together. In the end we became like an old married couple 鈥� having great laughs,pulling together like a proper team, finishing each other鈥檚 sentences鈥nd mostly fighting like cat and dog.

Of course, we would only argue about the important stuff: Does Dusty Springfield take precedence over Petula Clark? How long is too long when it comes to Bob Dylan? And is Oblivious the most important ending in the history of Scottish pop? Ridiculous I know, but it made working on the show such good fun.

Tonight鈥檚 show was also out there on it鈥檚 own musically, but after working on get It On I don鈥檛 think I could go back to doing a show where it鈥檚 the same every day. I enjoyed the range of suggestions tonight which covered everything from Hedwig and the Angry Inch through to some of the classic musicals like Paint Your Wagon and Guys and Dolls.

Nice to know there is a older audience listening to get It On as well. Astrid e-mailed to ask for Singing In The rain for all the oldies like her. 鈥淚 first saw the film circa 1953 when I was 9 years old!鈥� she says in the e-mail. Doing a quick bit of maths it doesn鈥檛 make Astrid that much of an oldie.

I suspected that Timewarp would have people doing the actions and Alsion Downey confirmed that she was indeed doing the timewarp whilst making the tea.

Most unusual suggestion of the night came from Julie in Edinburgh who has asked me to track down a song called "The Waiter and The Porter and The Upstairs Maid".

I failed tonight but next week on the new two hour edition of the show we will be turning those sort of queries over to our very own Doctor Disc who will be searching the 主播大秀 archives to track down some of those hard to find favourites. More on that next week.
