AU Mag Winds Up - Statement

Post categories:

ATL | 16:55 UK time, Friday, 30 March 2012

AU Mag is set to wind up after losing their main source of funding. The Arts Council of NI have decided not to continue providing money to the magazine after several years. The online version of the magazine is set to continue, however.

A statement from the publishers of AU Mag reads as follows.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that Alternative Ulster was unsuccessful in securing Arts Council funding for 2012/2013. As a result, AU Magazine is being put on hiatus. The website will continue to be run on a voluntary basis, and AU will continue to promote the best of Northern Irish and Irish music, culture and lifestyle in every way it possibly can.

The number of people who made AU Magazine the shining beacon of quality that it was over the almost nine years in which it was published are far too numerous to mention in this statement, as it’s a list that runs long. To each and every writer, designer, photographer, illustrator, intern, assistant, advertiser and individual who worked on or touched AU in any way, we are more grateful than words can express. We are incredibly proud of each one of the 81 issues that we produced, and that this is a testament to the talent, energy and time of each and every person who made it what it was. We literally cannot thank everyone enough.

We’d also like to give praise to every one of the bands, artists and cultural ventures that we featured over the years. Covering such an immensely vibrant and burgeoning scene has been an absolute privilege and pleasure.

Finally, an enormous thank you to the readers of AU, as without their passion and enthusiasm we simply wouldn’t have existed at all."

Empire, Belfast
29th March 2012

The famous Empire Music Hall in Belfast has never looked more glamorous as it prepares to launch Gifted Live worldwide through the use of some high-tech equipment and a fair sprinkle of internet magic. Unique unplugged performances by Duke Special, The Answer, VerseChorusVerse, and Katie and the Carnival show off the crème-de-la-crème of the local scene for all the world to see. However the real treat is yet to come for those who’ve made it down especially for the launch of ’s brand new EP, with support from .

A short and sweet collection of songs by harpist demonstrates that not all classical musicians take themselves too seriously. Combining tongue-in-cheek humour with a very eloquent take on Queen’s We Will Rock You, the quirky harpist’s mini set receives both the laughter and applause it deserves, and certainly leaving this audience intrigued enough to want more.

Look outside — chances are the length and the breadth of the country is still experiencing something of an early summer heatwave. As they would say back home, the craic’s ninety and, so far as today is concerned, there’s seems to be no better way to rejoice and act the collective eejit than at ’s first headline slot in Belfast since the release of their Vitamins EP in October last year. Exciting times, no doubt, but with material both old and absolutely brand spanking new at their disposal, will there be any visible musical progression for the Armagh four-piece?

Continuing to carve out subtle acoustic tales all on his lonesome, the choice of More Than Conquerors’ drummer as an opener tonight may initially seem a little misjudged. But while his placid approach is ultimately the antithesis of what’s yet to come, the keen response from tonight’s crowd reveals the dazzling efforts of a truly versatile songwriter. Somewhere between the heartfelt jauntiness of ‘Belly of the Beast’, the Nashville twang of the aptly-titled ‘Sickness In The Sunshine’ and set closer ‘My Lungs Don’t Breathe’, Neish proves that, although there are quite a few solo musicians in this country going for the “fragile but positively determined” angle, he manages to command a brand of subtle storytelling faring as charming as his offhand banter throughout.

Spiritualized
Mandela Hall, Belfast
23 March 2012

Weird one, this. Postponed shows and delayed release dates mean Spiritualized are performing an album none of us have heard. Furthermore, they're one of those bands who haven't really added to their (faithful) fan base in years - the majority of punters at the tonight will have seen this band before, possibly many times, possibly at the height of their fame at the turn of the century.

Will we have the patience to take all this new stuff on or end up pining for familiarity? We find out pretty early as the band, refusing to ease us in gently, open with ten minute long new single 'Hey Jane'. It's a microcosm of the gig as singer Jason Pierce, shaded, stage right and avoiding eye contact as always bleeds through relentless strobe lights, building drone and layered riffola to his hearts content. Crucially, the track doesn't drag.

GOTW - More Than Conquerors, Dutch Schultz, Droids in Masons

Post categories: ,

ATL | 09:55 UK time, Wednesday, 28 March 2012

Another week, another great gig of the, um.... week. This time it's off tothe maiden city for a triple whoppa' of meaty riffage. Hold the fries!Whatever that means.

The good thing about this bill is that you've the ever reliable a ballsy rock act so consistently great you could set your watchto them. This is complimented beautifully by boxfresh newbies whoATL is already in a bit of a lather about despite only having played theone song 'Astromech & Protocol'. But oh my, what a song!

And then, your headliners for the evening - the not completely establishedyet not that new either . Jamie MTC had this to say:
'We haven't played Derry in quite a while and its been very nice to us inthe past so we're really excited to bring our new stuff there and see whatthey think. It'll be good to see Dutch Schultz play and we haven't seenDroids before so all in all, we're in for a treat.'

If the headliners reckon THEY are in for a treat, who can put into worksthe treats awaiting you, the potential punter? SOLD!

That New Band Smell - Crow Black Chicken

Post categories: ,

ATL | 22:15 UK time, Monday, 26 March 2012

and that means it's the perfect time for some chilled out rock to pass those sunny days. brings you a mix of three bands new to ATL to check out featuring a perfect mix of instrumental doom, stoner rock and bluesy tunes so there's something in there for everyone!

***

As their online biography claims "With floods of fire raging from the rocky peaks, five wizards descended their sanctuary arriving many centuries later at the Foothills of the ancient Gaelic stronghold Dubh Linn to unleash a furious wrath of wizardry and riffs upon the scorched sunken soil." That pretty much says everything it needs to bar the fact once they descended from the mountains they made some really great tunes. They released their debut demos last summer and are definitely worth a listen if you enjoy the sounds of or then you'll love these guys!

The north coast is well renowned for producing high quality riffage heavier than the Giant's Causeway itself and Black Dunes are no exception to this rule. Very new to the scene their sludgy instrumental doom laden tunes, reminiscent of local favourites, are a slice of absolutely perfect stoner rock

Dirty Stevie, Niyah Sky, The Big Grizzly, Lost Diegos at Auntie Annies

Dirty Stevie, Niyah Sky, The Big Grizzly, Lost Diegos

Auntie Annie's, Saturday

It's a typical saturday night in Belfast and is host to four unique bands at tonight's 'Static', covering everything from pop punk to good old rock and roll. First up are seemingly new on the scene they hail from Crumlin and give us some indie-pop rock in the form of 'Lost in Translation', evoking the style of bands like and . It's their first gig at Auntie Annie's and they perform remarkably well, keeping us adequately entertained for their short four song set.

“Now for something completely different” announces lead singer Bill Wood of a statement that is completely, one hundred percent, true. Geared out in a wooly panda bear hat with a nose chain attached to it and big white sunglasses that could pass as safety goggles, Wood hammers away at his keyboard like a man possessed. They're not long together but they know what they're doing, it's loud, it's hard, it's heavy and oddly addictive. At one point they inexplicably don rubber gloves and throw complimentary pairs out to the audience, but that didn't go down as well as the free lollipops on the door. The song 'Behind Closed Doors' is a brilliant example of their specialised craft, that showcases some quiet reflective periods coupled with more intimidating, brutal noise.

Los Angeles is a great place for a musician, you are surrounded by amazing, hard-working, creative people and most of them are getting by just fine.

Warcrux are the opening act this afternoon. As a few punters make their way to the front, and the guitars get warmed up,the vibrations send shivers up our spine. Warcrux provide enough to get the crowd interested with a sound reminiscent of eighties-era Metallica and theyset the pace for the rest of the day, with their song 'Ties That Bind'being the highlight of the set. Raising a glass to St Patrick, the audience respond in kind andgive well-earned applause for what was a very tight set.

Having downgraded from a three-piece to a two-piece in recent days, Versives are an electronic rock band hailing from Cork. With their warm, perfectly Autumnal electronic approach, their 2011 EP, Two Enemies– released on Leeds-based indie label - brilliantly encapsulates this outfit’s uncanny knack from beautiful melody and bobbing synth-led soundscapes. Apparently, never off the road for touring, you could a whole lot worse than checking them out at a venue near you.

We’ve all been guilty of taking our music a little too seriously. I, for one, am no exception. Alas, there comes a point in one’s life when all you want to do is get horribly drunk and listen to straight up, no-frills rock n’ roll.- and , truly, what better soundtrack to such a simple calling than Belfast-based rock n’ rollers, ‘Tric? Led by guitar/vocalist Dale Hunter – a dead ringer for Bon Scott-era AC/DC – this three-piece combine punchy, three-chord blues-rock with scintillating solos and arse-shakingly upfront abandon. God help you if you think their sound is original but, equally, what’s your excuse if this doesn’t make you want to wear leather, swig bourbon and dance until you fall over?

After spending a few months by himself, Tony Wright, a.k.a. has decided that the stage is a lonely place and gathered a few likeminded souls to accompany him.

Joining him after opener ‘When The Rain Stops Falling’, an uptempo number in the style of , this former quiet man with a tenderly strong voice demonstrates how the previously bare material being rounded out by the supporting cast. ‘One Fine Day’ now has the solid rhythm of a march, and ‘The Accused’ stabs and jars, and our front-man, perhaps sensing strength in numbers, now has the confidence to deal with well-meaning hecklers. ‘You Can’t Win Back Your Freedom If You’ve Never Been Free At All’ is a rollicking protest song, but closing number ‘Big Red Van’ is the show-stealer.

It’s stripped down American rock, spat out and beat out with an aggression that shows that, although he may have ditched the electric for acoustic, Tony still likes a bit of head-banging. It’ll be entertaining to watch how he reconciles the two ends of the spectrum.

GOTW - Window Seats @ Radar, QUBSU

Post categories: ,

ATL | 11:00 UK time, Tuesday, 13 March 2012

That band Window Seats are great, aren't they? Yes we love their tunes(was nice to play a wee blast of 'Rat' again last night) and yes, was better than the entire Lord of the Ringssaga put together (seriously).

But today I think they're great because they've basically written thisblog for me, bigging up both themselves and the other two acts playing ourGOTW this Thursday at .

So, while I relax and get a brew on, it's over to Window Seats frontmanJude Mc Caffrey to do all the work....

'What people can expect from our set? The sound of three guys blasting outheavy alternative riffs, screaming and shouting with the odd delicateturn. Recently we've been stuck to computers working on new recordings, videos and doing loads of interviews here and there so we can't wait torip out some music. Radar is a always a great show with a nice big stageso we'll be running around at any opportunity!

'As for - can't wait as it's been ages since we've seenthem and they're the perfect band to chill out and energetically get intoall at the same time. Really gritty bluesy straight ahead songs that youcan have a pint to!

Little Doses, Unquiet Nights, Documenta Drone Pop
Auntie Annies Belfast
Sunday 11th March 2012

It’s a rather busy sunday evening in Auntie Annies this evening and as much as we’d like to believe there weren’t too many hangovers in Belfast, the allure of seeing ex- man Mark McClelland’s new musical venture Little Doses is probably what has everyone out on a school night.

ease us into the night with some shoegazing alternative rock that suits the lazy sunday evening perfectly. It’s difficult to make out the vocals amidst the wall of sound and despite having six members on stage at one time, the band are rather static but what they lack in stage presence however, they make up for in song writing with a talent for crafting atmospheric indie distortion that is comparable to the likes of or

Tonight in the cozy setting of Bunatee, Tony Wright, formerly of fame, takes to the stage in the form of with a bit of added support behind him. VerseChorusVerse fits in perfectly to the twinkly, candlelit venue. Providing flawless, acoustic based numbers that make you tap along one minute, warm your soul the next and sometimes both at the same time. The surprise backing of double-bass and harp really filled out the sound and gave it that little something more. Great opener for the night.

Next up, a three-piece made up of two thirds Scotsman and a Northern Irish girl. These guys completely shock the place up. The energetic trio gave us a set full of New Wave - guitar bashing, lashings of synth and a solid foundation of rhythm. Stand out performance.

Post categories: ,

ATL | 16:25 UK time, Wednesday, 7 March 2012

Bonus points if it's outside Belfast, that's our policy when it comes to gigs. Apart from the fact road trips are FUN, we generally find that shows in smaller towns mean hungrier, more enthusiastic crowds. So here's to our GOTW, which this week takes place in sunny seaside town Warrenpoint, with noisy upstarts headlining the INF on Friday night.

'We're going to be playing loads of new songs at these shows. We've spent some time writing and in the studio so this will be a good chance to hear some fresh material from us' explains Michael from GR.

'Also, a big reason we're playing these shows is because our buddies 'Kill Goliath' are over from London for a wee while. They're great guys and a great band so it would be great if you could give them a mention.'

The Maccabees, We Cut Corners
Spring & Airbrake
Belfast 4th March

On a mild night that almost signals the beginnings of Spring, we are treated to a night of excellent indie-rock in the appropriately named Spring & Airbrake. The Maccabees are currently touring on the back of their critically acclaimed third album Given to the Wild and given tonight’s performance, it’s no surprise to see how far this group’s star has risen.

Before The Maccabees take center stage, We Cut Corners provide the support for tonight’s main event. This two piece from Dublin, who provide a big sound with just a set of drums and a guitar, play a short set that sets up the evening nicely. Songs like ‘Dumb Blonde’ ‘Toll Free’ and ‘A Pirate’s Life’ tell lovely bittersweet stories, filled with wit.

Cashier No.9, Kowalski
The Empire, Belfast
Thursday 1st Match 2012

Taking to the stage, Kowalski seem to be rather enamoured with their surroundings at The Empire. “We feel like we should be reciting Shakespeare”, they inform us. Thankfully, the group resist the temptation to break into a soliloquy, but instead treat the audience to a roaring set of indie-rock treats. It takes only two songs to induce madcap dancing in the audience, with 'Phil Kansas' going down extremely well with an overenthusiastic group of devotees. The lads keep the energy high throughout the set, with new songs like 'Remedies' sounding just a fresh as their better known songs like 'Outdoors'. It’s a rather enjoyable performance from one of Belfast’s great treasures.

Even though they last played Belfast merely three weeks ago supporting Noel Gallagher, there is a real homecoming atmosphere to Cashier No.9’s gig this evening, with the venue packed out to capacity by the time the sextet take to the stage. It takes only a few songs for the band to blow the roof off the venue with their highly textured wall-of-sound rock, with tracks like 'Lost at Sea' and 'Oh Pity' getting the crowd going in the early half of the set.

It’s pure uncut rock and roll in Belfast’s Mandela Hall tonight as open tonight’s show. Clearly having played venues of all shapes and sizes, bassist Matt Gilmore steals the performance as he adopts the mannerisms of his rock heroes, strutting across the stage like and wagging his tongue like . As they bring their set to a close with ‘Massacre’, Skam may not have got the mosh pit they deserved, but with a few punters banging their heads and throwing up the horns, it’s clear that the crowd have had their eardrums warmed up plenty, in order to make way for the first of tonight’s headline acts.
