Find a quiet space where you can be alone with your thoughts and shut out the racket of a busy production office.

Although the task ahead may seem initially daunting,what you are about to hear is one of the most talented bands in the world....ever! Remember Cockney Rebel's 'Make Me Smile'? The stunning 'Spanish'style guitar solo in the middle of that song was composed and played by 'Charlie' Whitney, the guitarist from Family.

This will allow you to think only positive thoughts about Family - for example,did you know that Ian Anderson considered Family an influence on Jethro Tull? Peter Gabriel sites Roger Chapman as an influence on his singing style.

With these positive thoughts in mind, relax, concentrate only on your breathing, feeling it ebb and flow: close your eyes,we are almost ready to hear our first Family number in a positive, open minded way.

This track is 'How Hi The Li' - notice the casual beauty in the playing and the the way the track builds and winds the instruments in. Roger Chapman's voice is a subtle accompaniment, with great control, delivering the lyric is a seemingly casual converstaional style. Great! that was beautiful.

Now for the big one: In My Own Time:

The opening couple of bars, concentrating on Roger's vocal which are heavily influenced by Dr Arthur Jannov's Primal Scream therapy, can be disconcerting for the uninitiated - but this, Babs, is where we allow our imagination to take over and run free. Now see Roger as a sheep, bleating along with the band.As the track builds, now see Roger as an electronic goat and then as a sheep again, all the time controlling your breathing and allowing yourself to become immersed in the rising fugue quality in the track progression to it's climatic crescendo. Now, that's what I call Amazing!

Now, slowly allow yourself to come back from the singing sheep and the intense musical experience you have just enjoyed.....from this short introduction to Family you can move onto more complex but rewarding pieces, like 'Glove' which contains some of the most glorious guitar playing ever recorded and The Weavers Answer, a true melting pot fusion.

And now, it's time to get it on......how about Glove?

Not sure how i feel about it - pleased about spontaneous democracy and speed with which things can come together, but it's still twice as much money for Epic and Joe (whom I've never seen or heard and no nothing about) will doubtless be the first No 1 of 2010 anyway, because the RAtM record isn't exactly endearing, and there's no reason to continue to buy it: it's destined to be 'pop quiz' material in years to come.

In my view, both are dubious - neither would have made it without an extraordinary push from some kind of machine and neither, I guess, will stand the test of time.

But good luck to them, wish it was me.

The fact that Joe may or may not make No.1 next week isn't really the point and although I agree it was one machine against another... social networking campaign v Cowell's slick marketing monster.... I still think the underdog (by some distance) won. I don't like either song but you would have got some fancy odds about Cowell not getting the Xmas no.1 again this year.

Incidentally I noticed that the Ö÷²¥´óÐã website are hailing RatM as the first #1 based solely on downloads. Someone at the beeb needs to do their homework a bit better.

Disappointing that the blog campaign to get the Christmas No. 1 for Jethro Tull was so convincingly outmanoeuvred. It would have been the first No. 1 of the millennium based solely on vinyl sales.
