Thinking about Freda Payne ...that idea that Bryan mentioned, about song lyrics that have now become disturbing (Livin' Doll) or un-pc as society/times change, might be quite an intriguing theme.

It's a long time since I heard 'young, gifted and black' on the radio, though maybe that's just a matter of coincidence. There's probably a few records that eulogize the benefits of smoking and such like.

主播大秀 Scotland has an interesting story on it's news front page - today, Andrea Neil, 34, from Alloa has been convicted of the culpable homicide Robert Hamilton after a 4:00 am fight about which CD to put on.

It doesn't say which CD was at the heart of the dispute so we don't know if she wanted more Michael Bolton and he was a committed Jethro Tull fan, but it raises an intresting idea for a theme....

Actually, if Micheal Bolton was at the heart of this then it would be his second fatality - I remember reading an English case where the husband got fed up with his wife's obsession with Michael Bolton ( she was a middle aged woman who had covered their house in posters of Michael - when he complained about it for the umpteenth time, she taunted him with "he'd more of a man than you'll ever be' ...that was it...

That was quite a few years ago, so he'll probably be out now..

#51 Great lists Joe. Steve Earle played Goodbye at the GRCH last week, one of my all time favourites but like you I think Emmylou's version shades it.

Right this has been bugging me since Thursday so I will get it off my chest. I am not a fan of Prog Rock...except I don't think I am because I have not really heard any. Especially not on GIO despite many many suggestions of tracks by a lot of listeners which clearly fit the theme and are, I presume, good tracks of that genre.

The motto of the show is you name it we will play it....except that clearly does not apply to *prog rock* where by having a night of this msuic while the senior producer and presenter are both on holiday is just like patting all you *prog rock fans* on the head giving you your wee moment and then you can forget any of your tunes for at least a year and probably longer as "they have been played".

The other problem is this. An awfull lot of people are excluded from nominating simply as they do not know any of the material, it becomes a simple request show and worse I would imagine many many more will think *prog rock*??? And not even switch on.

So, far from a *woo hoo* from me frankly. I think the regular bloggers who are into this sort of music have been treated very unfairly by having their music excluded and this makes it worse.

I am going to make a point of listening, I hope I enjoy the show.

That will be me struck off.

Ok...final words before I take a break! It's my understanding that prog rock includes The Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Radiohead, Muse....all artists we feature on the show. Far from not being a fan of all the bands listed above, I am. Vic is a bit of a prog rock fan too, we did a prog rock special for his Monday show a year or so back, and it was really well received, hence the thought that we could celebrate prog rock for a night with Vic at the helm..... So I hope you'll enjoy it in amongst the other themes this week. So yes, it's a good idea to do it with Vic as he's really going to embrace the music and theme, and you know what, I hope all those folk who think prog rock ain't for them will get a surprise when they hear the diverse tracks and artists who get played.
Enjoy your week folks....and yes Get it On is still the show where you choose the music!! And nobody is struck off for expressing an opinion! Otherwise I'll be struck off too!!!

I'll be happy if the majority of the Prog Rock show is by bands we haven't. Heard yet on GIO...if it's mainly Queen, Radiohead etc then it'll be a REAL disappointment. To be honest, I think Vic is probably better qualified to deliver that particular show. I'll be INCONSOLABLE if Caravan aren't played (well, not really but I might as well try).

Jay-Z might say that, but this morning its Todd Rundgren's Arena that's floating my boat.

I have said before that my choice of best Album of all time is David Bowie's Scary Monsters and Super Creeps. The album was released in 1980 with Ashes to Ashes as the lead single, that song with its outstanding video was a good indication of what was to come with the album - on one level commercial and accessible but with much greater creativity and depth to it.

Beginning with a series of electronic noises and a howling Japanese vocal in Its No Game Part 1 the album then eases into 4 hit singles Up The Hill Backwards, Ashes to Ashes, Scary Monsters and Fashion. All these tracks were hits of a sort, in Ashes case a huge hit, but none were throwaway tracks continuing with the theme of catchy lead singles developed in the Low, Heroes, Lodger Trilogy (Sound and Vision, Heroes, Boys Keep Swinging).

The album very much has the "old style" side 1 and side 2. In my opinion Side 2 is even better than side 1 but without the singles, the tracks are slightly longer and with an even darker almost menacing tone in parts. Teenage wildlife, Scream Like A Baby and Because You're Young are all tracks with great playing from the ever present Davis / Alomar / Murray band and Robert Fripp's guitar playing in particular is absolutely outstanding. As he did in his earlier 70's albums a nice cover version (Tom Verlaines Kingdom Come) is included and the album ends with another version of Its No game which is slower and weary in tone.

Interestingly a promo lp was released at the time mixing songs from this and the back catalogue entitled 1980 All Clear. It seemed he was letting his past and the changing personas go. Sadly he never hit this height again and Lets Dance was a very poor follow up.It was not until Heathen and Reality that Bowie really hit top form again although there were a smattering of good tracks in most of his lp's through the 80's and 90's nothing of the standard set in Scary Monsters.

The album is stunning from start to finish and the standout track is without doubt Teenage Wildlife where Bowies vocal performance, Robert Fripp on guitar and Roy Bittan on piano and keyboards all excell. Of course alternatively you can never go wrong with Ashes to Ashes.

I've just checked Spotify - Julie's Caravan track is 6:00 mins long. 'Starship Trooper' by Yes, for example, is 10:00mins long.

By the time the The News and the McAulay & Co ad are catered for, a show which would normally be about 20 tracks will be whittled right down to under 10.

What's to be done?

Sorry Miss B, you can't claim having played 'some' tracks from bands with the longevity & diversity of Beatles/Genesis/Floyd/Queen as backing up the "We play Prog Rock" argument, as each of them have a large catalogue of *non* Prog-ish tracks, which tend to be the ones that get played.

For Floyd/Genesis, other than 'Money' on talent night, I can't remember the last time either had a prog track played
For Beatles/Queen, I'd have to challenge that they are prog *at all*.

I would further argue that - as a ratio of requests to plays - the experience of the listener is that Floyd/Genesis/Gabriel/Tull/Yes/Nice (etc) are actively avoided, as they get requested *every week* (multiple times for Floyd/Tull), yet get played once in a blue moon.

(btw, this would have been the show I'd have happily stumped up a ton to CiN to co-produce)

I don't suppose that there is a clear definition of what constitutes 'Prog-Rock' but I think it can generally be described as being a prevalent musical style commencing in 1968 (with the release of The Beatles (White) album) and tailing off dramatically in 1977 when the Punk era began. I think it reached its zenith or nadir, depending upon your view, with the 1973 release of Yes's triple album 'Tales Form the Topographic Oceans', comprising of only six tracks.

Prog - Rock is characterized by not conforming to the hitherto musical standard of a three minute ballad or love song,or 'pop'song that could be danced to: conversely, each 'prog rock' track was at least several minutes long, was generally un-dancable, seldom about love and usually contained long instrumental passages. 'The Product' was most often wrapped up in beautiful and correspondingly indulgent art work on the sleeve, so that the overall impression was that you were buying into something that was much more than the sum of it's parts: a real work of art that was to be both viewed and listened to:intellectually and culturally, it gave an aura of superiority and exclusivity (rather like certain kinds of jazz) - though this was not smoke and mirrors - much of the playing on these albums is truly breathtaking and the individual musicians are master craftsmen at their innovative best.

The formidible and restless songwriting team that was Lennon - McCartney kicked this movement off with the release of Hey Jude, a six minute single and the White Album, a 30 track double album containing a hotch potch of musical styles and experimentation on a hitherto unseen scale within 'pop' music - therefore, The Beatles would certainly qualify during this period, though having initiated the style, they abandoned it immediately - which was a trademark response,as they constantly desired reinvention (and were beginning to fall apart) .

When punk turned up in 1977, the prog-rock bands responded either by reinventing themselves (Genesis)or disbanding from their original or core line up (Floyd).

Therefore, 'prog-rock' bands should not be defined by the band's name, but the style of music they were making at that time - so, you would be quite correct to say that the GIO team playing The Beatles, Genesis or early Floyd is not in itself doing anything other than playing a three minute pop song. Queen have never been a 'prog-rock' band, more of a music hall turn.

The style has been revived somewhat by bands like Radiohead and Muse and to some extent by the ambient music bands that fell off the dance scene.

But I think you are being a bit hard on Miss Babs - who lists Yes as a band she likes - (and I don't think 'Wonderous Stories' is a three minute pop song) - but as I was pointing out earlier much of this music comprises tracks that are between 6 - 20 minutes long and GIO is an early evening request show for the entire population. I guess they are bombarded with requests and ideas on the night.

It must be quite hard to decide to devote a large portion of one GIO show to one track.

I've only been into GIO and this blog for a few weeks - but I strongly sense that there is a need for 'another' request show, which caters for a less obvious content and probably a different non - thematic format - stuff that's interesting, rather than obvious.

But what I like about the show (and the blog contributions particularly) is that it keeps on throwing up bands and artists I find I want to explore because of the recommendations of the bloggers. I've been listening to Caravan and Warren Zevon on Spotify over the last couple of days.

I would never have done so otherwise.

For me, Prog Rock is a pejorative referring to something like Tarkus which is pretentious, long-winded and humourless. It requires a great effort to listen to because of relentless, sterile, look-at-me complexity and is ultimately unsatisfying because there is a vacuum at its core. It will have a very short footnote in the history of popular music and then only because it provoked punk. Today it is a curiosity and an evening of it should prove (unintentionally)amusing.

Agreed.Tarkus and things like Tarkus are mince. I never liked Keith Emerson and all that stabbing keyboards with knives. I sat through Yes playing all six sides of 'Tales from The Topographic Oceans' at the Apollo in December 1973- Rick Wakeman could be seen looking bored rigid and chomping on a curry - amazingly, this was a big hit at Xmas and topped the album charts - huge sales. I don't now have a copy but tried listening to a bit of it on Spotify - utter mince. No wonder Punk turned up.
