H is for....

Bryan Burnett | 17:37 UK time, Thursday, 15 July 2010

hme.JPGAs tempted as we were by hairy people, I worried that two hours of beardy bands might not have kept everyone entertained. Your H suggestions have been flooding in and thanks very much to everyone who has contributed. I really liked Jim's suggestion of 'hard to hear lyrics' and that's an idea will will return to very soon. Hippies, horses and hounds, and harmonicas songs were all in the running but we have decided to go for 'happy days and holidays' and the songs that remind you of them. See you Monday for what should be a cheery show.

    MONDAY

    'Holiday' - Kinks

  • Comment number 3.

    TUESDAY

    INFAMOUS

    Like famous, only more so.

  • Comment number 4.

    "That's it - cough"

  • Comment number 5.

    Happy Days

The Hula Hula Boys - Warren Zevon - Hawaiian Holiday High Jinks
Matty Groves- Fairport Convention - Homicidal Holiday High Jinks
Sealed With A Kiss - Bobby Vinton - Heartbreaking Holiday High Jinks

    I is for Infidelity

  • Comment number 6.

I is for Indecent. Songs with lyrics that are a bit risqué. Bound to be in with a snowball's chance.

    Happiness
As Nine Inch Nails didn't find many takers in the production team when they did get played, I won't waste anyone's time suggesting Happiness in Slavery. It's rubbish, anyway.
But they did do a cover, featured in "The Crow" soundtrack, of another famously happy band's songs.
    Joy Division Dead Souls

Then there's the wonderfully positive, upbeat
    REM Shiny Happy People

    Not forgetting the cheeriest of
The Beatles songs Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Am I missing the point here a bit?

Here's one that might fit better. One of the best Bond themes ever.
    GLADys Knight License To Kill

Think all of those might have been better for a contradiction theme. Been suggested before, I know.

Happy As I Am and El Rayo X -

    hahahahahahahahahhahahahahhahahaha :0):0)

Well they make me happy even if the listeners don't get to find out for themselves.

And Maire Ni Chathasaigh & Chris Newman on Folk Club tonight - how could that not make you smile. Saw them years ago in Rothesay and they were knock-out.

    HOLIDAYS:

Off to Bordeaux and Lourdes next week:

The Daughter will be 'SHOPPING' (Pet Shop Boys) in Bordeaux, which boasts the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe I believe...aaaarrrggghh!

On Thursday, I hope I catch the 'EVENING TRAIN' (Van Morrison)

Thinking of Lourdes reminds me about 'WADE IN THE WATER' - Marlena Shaw's version is fantastic...perfect for dancing to.

Last year's holiday song was 'LIKE A HOBO' by Charlie Winston...on everywhere you went+ a really catchy tune.

  • Comment number 10.

I presume you've tried everything else.

  • Comment number 11.

    #10...oh yes!

  • Comment number 12.

    Norrie, Scotch & Co

I've just heard it announced that Mary -Chapin Carpenter and Tiff Merrit will play the Queens Hall in Edinburgh on Oct 26th.

Presumably there will also be a Glasgow gig.

I hope that's not the same night as Dreadzone at Oran Mhor....hmmm..

Enjoy France. The Bordeaux will taste better than the water.

Interviewing all day tomorrow in your neck of the woods. Is there really sunshine on Leith cos this rain's not making me feel of a happy holiday disposition.

And in keeping with every GIO / Happy / Holiday /Sunshine theme it'll be raining mongrels and moggies on Monday.

CLARENCE IN WONDERLAND from PRE-MODERNIST WIRELESS ON RADIO - THE PEEL SESSIONS by GONG

CLARENCE IN WONDERLAND from SHOOTING AT THE MOON by KEVIN AYERS AND THE WHOLE WORLD

    Definitely a happy holiday song.

I is for INCREDIBLE and also for ISLAND RECORDS

  • Comment number 20.

#19 yes, Fred of course I do. You know how it is when you repeat a thing often enough you suddenly forget the words or numbers. Yesterday I forgot how to spell address. It would be a kindness to play some of these requests before I lose my mind altogether.

I is for I've forgotten what I suggested in my original alphabet...........

but Island records is a good suggestion. Incredible on the other hand could be interpreted by some people as the Smiths or the Proclaimers.

  • Comment number 21.

On the other hand some string bands could be called incredible.......

  • Comment number 22.

Heard John Beattie playing the Buzzcocks on Radio Scotland this morning, didn't know he was a big fan. Needs to be much more Buzzcocks on the radio. How about Everybody's Happy Nowadays for your Happy Holidays theme on Monday and Harmony in my Head for the Friday night show.

Just back from a sailing trip where we dodged the wind, rain & fog at Port Edgar (terrible summer weather you have up river Julie...!!!). We made the best of it; the Hawes Inn is a nice place to keep dry!

Off surfing next week so my holiday Monday request is Wipeout - Surfaris

Suggestion for Tuesday is anything you like because I won't be listening caus I'm on holiday!

    Themeless Friday

Friday Night Cheer you up music -

    Empire Ants - Gorrillaz

excellent Friday night music - starts refelective and ends trimphant and upbeat

Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream vs The Hoxtons

lets crank it up for the weekend, Bryan, even die hard Cream fans, like yourself, will find this dance version irresistable

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles - From The Love Album

Its about time we heard this magnifcent track

    Pigs Might Fly

    Inevitablty, it's Dreadzone....

American Dread or Walk Tall - Dreadzone

you'll be surprised how much you enjoy this..

    #20 told you.

  • Comment number 28.

How about the Jackson Browne version of Incredible String Band:

Jackson Browne - First Girl I Loved

  • Comment number 29.

If anyone is interested three former ISB members are on at the Fringe 12-14 August playing live and telling "hilarious" stories.

    I is for Irrelevant Themes

No matter how you vote the government gets in (Innes/Stanshall)and no matter what theme you pick, GIO will play the same coterie of artistes, now pleasantly disturbed in their retirement cottages by the regular thud of royalties cheques on the doormat.

  • Comment number 30.

scrub all those previous requests I made earlier. They were below par.

Just spent an extra hour on the bus today thanks to the annual Jehova's Witness gathering at McDiarmid park. Didn't mind the delay so much on my way to work. But was a bit miffed on the way home.

Should have had my ishuffle on gospel to ease the pain. and remembered it's Friday.

Edwin Hawkins Singers Oh Happy Day

  • Comment number 31.

    You should be asking for:

All Along The Watchtower - B. Dylan

Better an hour late in this world than thirty years early in the next.

  • Comment number 32.

    Happy days:
This old heart of mine - Isley Brothers
    A little respect - Erasure
    Dance with me - Orleans
    Born to run - Springsteen
What can I say - Boz Scaggs

    Holidays:
Summer holiday - Cliff Richards (a family tradition is that we play this as we leave home each summer)
Que sera - Diego Torres (reminds me of the piano bar in our Rome hotel, and a fabulous Italian holiday)
Heads Carolina, tails California (this was on a "Where's Wally" CD my brother gave me as he dropped us at the airport. It always reminds me of driving from Miami to Naples, trying to identify the songs and artists..........and a great family holiday in Florida (without theme parks!)
New York, New York - Ryan Adams (no explanation required)
All I want to do - Sugarland (bought the CD on holiday last year, and it always reminds me of driving the Pacific Coast Highway)

    Theme idas for next week:
I-tunes - songs you only own in digital formats
    Intoxication - boozy songs
    Jackpot - songs about winning
Jigsaw puzzle - nominate three "connected" songs, BB plays one. Nature of connection is for GIO listeners to decided (and explain as part of the nomination)
    Killers and killing
Keen - songs about ambition, eagerness and desire
Labour - songs about work or birth
    Loathing and lust

    Have a good weekend all

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 33.

Gridlock - Warren Zevon - Always reminds me of crossing the Kingston Bridge

  • Comment number 34.

#31 Excellent! I have wondered which came first - that song or the pamphlet? Have also wondered why I never see any pandas (bears, not cars) making their way to these conventions. Should just be grateful - that would stop the traffic up even more.

#32 Like that theme list. And your Boz Scaggs suggestion for
Monday - here's another one (I don't do original, just obvious)
    Lido Shuffle
Swimming indoors is unnatural and wreaks havoc with sensitive skin and bleached hair. Can't beat the open-air experience. Especially on high days and holidays.

It would also fit for I is for Intoxication -
    "one more for the road"
As long as someone else is driving, naturally.

  • Comment number 35.

#34 - I always endeavour to be the designated drinker!

The good news is my Ma is going home to Ireland to see the family. The bad news is she insists I also go. Being a dutiful daughter is hard work.

    ;o)

For Monday - I'll Tell Me Ma - Van Morrison & The Chieftans

    Theme suggestion for Tuesday

A show featuring songs about the Internet would be fun!

    See you in August!

    :o)

  • Comment number 36.

#34 a woman after my own heart - I like to stick to what I do best. Which isn't driving.

And if you're not too particular about the "I is for Internet" suggestion getting the heave-ho to make way for playing that brilliant VM & Chieftains song, they might also consider playing
    The Dubliners Seven Drunken Nights

Enjoy your dutiful daughter holiday. Have managed to avoid those for some years, running out of excuses. Luckily I have 4 siblings. Unluckily, 3 of them live abroad. But the one who doesn't is top-notch for keeping it all together and bearing the brunt. A wonderful woman with endless patience. (Then think - hope my kids never talk about me in this way. Hardly likely at the moment - I is currently cash cow. But I'm pretty certain things are different with us. I went that extra mile. I engaged with their taste in music. Then rethink - that's one mother you'd want to run miles from)

  • Comment number 38.

My shout for Monday is Mama by Genesis.

Never a fan but this track perfectly summed up the situation that I found myself in during the late Summer of '83!

Not a particularly happy memory & per usual it was all my fault! C'est la Vie!

  • Comment number 39.

    #32 good list Joe

#24 Soft Cell did an alternative version of wipeout. They called it Say Hello Wave Goodbye.

    For Monday

It'll shine when it shines / Ozark Mountain Daredevils

A real family favourite my kids used to sing their wee hearts out to when we went on our holidays.

  • Comment number 40.

How many lengths this morning Gaie?

  • Comment number 41.

Yesterday, Paolo and I don't count lengths, just time. I'm a very slow swimmer for all I try my best - everyone just glides past, legs hardly moving. It's very disheartening. Anyway it wasn't a very mentally productive swim. All I came up with was

K = Kleptomania, a return to the stolen riffs theme.

However, I salute Joe's Jigsaw idea. I think that would be great fun. I tried to explain something vaguely like that a while back and everyone was baffled. Hopefully his idea and its explanation is more user-friendly.

Happy holidays - can't use Bad Day again so what about

The Real McCoy - The Silencers

it reminds me of Greenock's glory days in 1999 when the Tall Ships visited. It was the best of times here, wonderful sunshine, a carefree family atmosphere with the whole of Inverclyde walking around the Waterfront and enjoying themselves. I just remember playing a Silencers' CD while getting ready to go down to the harbour again and this song sounding as happy as I felt. The are coming back next year.

Our holidays tend to be on the Isles of Rum and Skye and not much music involved, but last year as we hit the road to Crianlarich we had on Ode to J Smith on in the car so

    J Smith - Travis

would remind us of a brilliant weekend, me being Hazel, Ross and myself and I don't expect there will be many more holidays for the three of us what with girlfriends and boyfriends (theirs) and Mum (me) being nothing more than a burden ...

Way back, way way back, my friend Elaine and I were in France with my Mum and Dad and Nights in White Satin was the song of the holiday. Elaine and I were complete and hopeless romantics, the highlight of our holiday apart from a sight of whichever garcons we fancied, was seeing Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet in French. Oh Rrromeo, Rrromeo pourquoi est'tu Rrromeo? How our little hearts fluttered.

Nights in White Satin - the Moody Blues

    or the next year

Honky Tonk Women - Rolling Stones

played in le Nightclub. In the days when 10pm was the home curfew hour, it was an unbelievable indulgence for us to be allowed to go out at 10.00pm to start our evening - and in a Nightclub!! Sure beat walking along Rothesay prom, wondering if any of the young farmers would offer us a run in his car.

    OK, best stop now.

I = if only and what if - how things might have been or might yet be

not so different from your Ideas, Paolo and if that gets chosen I'll be pleased as I found a gorgeous song a couple of nights ago that I'm dying to suggest for something, it's Sandy Denny, I'm a Dreamer

I'll say it for you, Glen:
    I is for Interminable ramblings

  • Comment number 42.

    I salute your ramblings' interminability!

    >8-D

    Re: Swimming

Maybe you should try the breadth stroke.......

  • Comment number 44.

I remember the Tall ships well. Simply because the sun shone on Greenock that weekend. I think it's due to shine again sometime in 2014. Seriously though can't believe it was that long ago. I would have said about five or six years. Jeez!

  • Comment number 45.

    MONDAY

The happiest holidays of my childhood, i.e. the only holidays of my childhood, were spent in Gweedore, Co.Donegal, where the weather is even more unpredictable than in Glasgow.

'Against the Wind' - Máire Brennan

My cousins went to school with the Brennans!

  • Comment number 46.

    TUESDAY

    INQUISITION

    No-one was expecting that.......

  • Comment number 47.

Bryan will be on 'Classics Unwrapped' at 17:05 this evening.

I wonder if they'll play Jethro Tull.......

  • Comment number 48.

#43 Scotch, the breadth-strokers are a scourge of the Port Glasgow Pool and should be BANNED. Thankfully there are none in the Gourock Pool.

I is for Intolerant (my middle name)

  • Comment number 49.

Bonnie Raitt was featured album on Johnnie Walker's sounds of the 70's. Good programme that.

  • Comment number 50.

Paolo, your request for the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves was played on the Classics Unwrapped prog. Did you catch it?

  • Comment number 51.

    Sounds like swine flu.

I is for inflation. I looked at Roxy Music tickets for the Armadillo. With the usual add-ons they were nearly £75. The last time I saw them, Eno was with them, Ferry's voice was sound (unlike on Wossie's show)and the admission price was £1.50 - happy days.

  • Comment number 52.

    #50
Fraid not. Yesterday was an extremely rare occasion when all three offspring were in the country at the same time so I took the opportunity to bundle them all into a curry house. I'll listen again later.

  • Comment number 53.

I don't quite believe this, but nobody has yet suggested:

The Dead Kennedys "Holiday in Cambodia"

Would be a good segue in from Cliff Richard...

  • Comment number 54.

Happy Together - The Leningrad Cowboys
    Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochrane
    Summertime - Charlie Parker

and just on the off-chance that one of our beloved producers was hoping to play this little (2'19) song to atone for the premature demise of The Hedgehog, I'll get it right this time:

How Happy I Am - the Incredible String Band

  • Comment number 55.

    Happy Days

Bounce In Your Buggy - Sha Na Na - A samba for summer
Caribbean Moon - Kevin Ayers - A cheery tune for an Unfair Monday
On An Island - David Gilmour - A peaceful summer night

Harry I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability... There's a theme idea here!

  • Comment number 57.

    Monday

We all got flung in the Morris Oxford Estate, with a roof thingy that held an enormous trunk and carted off to Carnoustie for a fortnight.

Although it seems slightly absurd to me now, I thought Carnoustie was magical - I loved the tunnels that go under the railway line and bring you out on the beach:Magical sand dunes, great tennis courts and Beach huts.

I realise now that this was all constructed around the old boy getting to practice his golf at what he believed a most challenging course.

But no matter -the Beach cafe did fabulous ice cream and coffee, had a pin ball machine which I adored and a juke box: I loved the juke box.

From the summer of 1964, where the nine year old henri hannah became obsessed with the 'b' side of 'A Hard days Night'

Telt ye all. Never fails. Pi**ing down outside.

  • Comment number 60.

    Holiday tunes - very evocative!
In the summertime by Mungo Jerry and Crocodile Rock by Elton John will always remind me of sunny carefree childhood holidays in Millport.

Then anything from Saturday Night Fever - that summer when I was almost surgically removed from my cheesecloth and love beads and became a disco diva, putting aside the patchouli oil for Charlie - there were so many hot Saturday nights that year during the school holidays!

As for now, the Saw Doctors do so many songs about holidays good and bad! N17 for the anticipation of good times on the way to Galway and Mayo - or for anyone holidaying in Scotland or Ireland "will it ever stop Raining?" Lots of good driving tunes!

  • Comment number 61.

Well done for cheering up dreich reekie. What about the theme from Cheers? And an I theme...indiscretions. Me and Mrs Jones, Weakness in me...ciao, madhufromedinburgh
