Songs for your ex...

Bryan Burnett | 20:06 UK time, Monday, 16 May 2011

Tonight's show was one of the most enjoyable shows since we've started Get It On. It was joy to present. It was such a simple idea to get you to share your 'recent discoveries' but it really worked. We got such a lot of new music that I now can't wait to go home and explore some of those names further.
However it was also great to hear from folk discovering 'old' artists for the first time. I got great texts from people who were only getting into Teenage Fanclub and The BMX bandits for the first time. I also loved the text from the 12 year old boy who discovered Bob Dylan for the very first time today.
We got lots of comments from folk who were enjoying sharing other listener's discoveries and I think it was summed up by this lovely post on our Facebook page: "Ooh I'm enjoying this voyage of discovery. The Get it on crew and passengers really know how to sail this boat."
It's a theme I want to return to in a few months. In the meantime 'songs that remind you of a former love' is our topic for tomorrow...

    Bob Dylan - Idiot Wind

Previously on the blog - never mind Rorys Dad. A mere 80 run defeat....

Confused. Thought it was about star signs tomorrow, if I heard right. Then I read the "coming up bit". Ach, well. Not got any former lovers to remember. An innocent abroad. Might have to go back to something more innocent like a
    Crush Jennifer Paige
    which definitely registers.

    TUESDAY

    Oh, goody! Another opportunity to request this;

'Getting Over You' - Willie Nelson & Bonnie Raitt

When my marriage fell apart I went through a spell of sitting in the corner, sookin' on Swedish vodka and listening to Country music.

This is the song that helped me begin to heal. Written by the late Stephen Bruton, it contains the killer line:- "There's a vantage point, (it takes some time to find), where you can see how all the pieces fit as you watch them fall apart..."

I imagine everyone who has similarly suffered can relate to that.

For the mother of my child, and the grandmother of my child's child.

    Mary-Doll,

    This should help.

    Former love?

A difficult one for me because all I ever loved I still have.

Apart from MB Bars perhaps but I can't find a song about that.

Maybe now that it's impossible to get Pink Floyd together given the recent passing of former members, I should request Mother from The Wall

#5 Scotch - that's what I was referring to. I should have provided my own link to help out other folks. Double damn that I didn't. ;o)
Love and life's no' easy. I'm an amateur, but do still feel the rough and tumble, even if it doesn't compare to what others have been through.
Love your suggestion - even if it's not from a similar vantage point.

Jest you not... it was July '79 & the song was Devo's The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise

#9 Gaie, that was one of several very good tracks on tonight's show courtesy of the blog, great result!

As for tomorrow.....my first proper date was to go to see the film "Grease" in summer 1978 at the "Orient" cinema in Ayr, the young lady was called Jacqueline, who hailed from Troon......wonder what she's doing now?

Anyway the best number for my money is the title track.....

    Grease - Frankie Valli

    Paul from Ayr

    Ooops, I forgot:
Still within the sound of my voice - Linda Ronstadt

#19 - Glen - I just looked that up. What a brilliant word!

    :o)

No angry songs for me today, I'm in too good a mood! Please play this for the mad Irishman who stole my heart. He would appreciate the humour!

    Walk Out Backwards -

Or play this one because it makes me cry!

Old Flames Can't Hold A Candle To You -

    ;o)

ahh now, recent parting from 1st love and all very raw but Roger Daltry singing 'where would I be without your love' from the film McVicar would be very lovely to hear again please, ill get the hankies ready just in case

I thought it was zodiac tonight though? Hi Aries and my name is jinkk onwards and upwards maybe we could do a theme of chat up lines? and certainly not if I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me!!!

oh or how about songs that bring a tear to your eye for a theme? it doesnt need to be sad emotion though could be happy? maybe songs that have you overcome with emulsion as my father used to say now that would be cathartic!

  • Comment number 24.

Gloria Estefan aimed this at Fidel Castro, who was definitely not one of her ex-loves...the sentiments read as pretty apt for this theme though..."Live your life, but live it real far away"

    Glporia Estefan - 'Go Away'

It's a great dance track...says what it means but in such an upbeat way...dance that ex right outta your hair!

  • Comment number 25.

    Of course I mean Gloria!

I thought last night's show was the best one in all the time I've been listening.

I haven't downloaded anything yet but will definately listen again.

The range and diversity in the shouts last night was quite incredible, I thought, and only a tiny fraction obviously made it to the playlist.

It adds creeedence to and echos many sentiments already expressed on this blog, so there's no point in rehearsing it all again. The programme said it all.

hmmm.... songs about the ex....Oh well, here goes...

Songs about relationship break - ups tend to concentrate on the melodramtic and that many end with a calamatous event is probably true enough - but it is more or less always preceded by a long period of life as a zombie.

This zombie life is filled with dread, anticipation and occasional elation, and was a great fascination for me when I was going through it.

Two songs from the period always struck me as particularly relevant in that they describe zombie living quite well:

You're Not The Only One - Love & Money

The Rhythm Of The Blues - Mary-Chapin Carpenter

also, Battlefield - Nick Lowe has to be up there too - there is a fabulous cover version of that song by Diana Ross - worth checking out.

Don`t Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith

I still can`t listen to it without tears!

1977 Met a girl from Luton. I went there a couple of times, She was supposed to come up but phoned at last minute to say she'd no money - I was flush so sent £150 by post to allow her to fly up - never set eyes on the wee slapper again - When on phone Rod stewart was singing 1st cut is the deepest. Can't listen to that song but I fall about laughing. There was going to be a party when she came up so i dont think my intentions were honourable. So not for the last time has a woman cost me dearly
