Voyage of discovery...

Bryan Burnett | 19:45 UK time, Friday, 13 May 2011

'Recent discoveries' was ( I think) suggested on the blog. On Monday night I want to know all about the things you have recently come across. They don't have to be particularly new things - it could be some vintage blues or country that you found by accident. However, I think it could be an opportunity for us all to refresh our record collections. If we trust our audience to pick quality oldies then it stands to reason that we should put our faith in you when it comes to picking some new tracks. I'm not the only one in our team who has been introduced to some real goodies from the blog or Facebook. Tune in on Monday and see what we can discover together.

I recently discovered a phone number written on a taxi receipt.

    No name.

    Just a number.

    Aerials Up - Superglue

Have been introduced to a lot of new music courtesy of my fellow bloggers, thank you ☺ Also researching for on theme songs has uncovered a few hidden gems.

    The Walkmen - The Rat
Band of Skulls - Death By Diamonds and Pearls
Vanessa De Mata & Ben Harper - Boa Sorte
Karen Elson - The Ghost Who Walks
Arcade Fire - Ready to Start

#3. Second The Walkmen - The Rat and Karen Elson - The Ghost Who Walks (since I've suggested them both...unsuccessfully...more than once!!!)

    Recent discoveries by me include:

Wye Oak - 'The Altar' or 'Civilians'
Pink Martini - 'City Of Night'
Chris TT - 'Words Fail Me'

Most of my favourite new discoveries come coutesy of the Shaun Keaveny Breakfast Show on Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio 6 Music!

Nothing quite like musical discovery ...

'Magnetic Baby' ~ Semi Precious Weapons
    'On my Own' ~ Yasmin
'Short Sharp Shock' ~ (we are) Performance
    'S-I-C-K-O' ~ Fangs
    'Last Weekend' ~ The Tiny

but especially the brilliance that is ...

'MechANICal' ~ Nostalghia (Kate Bush crashes into Toti Amos and Bjork)

any of the above would be beautifully grace ...

Hope Tori can forgive me ...

The boys have come back to roost and have a lot to answer for. Food bills spiralling. The basic community living they learned in shared accommodation at uni conveniently forgotten as they revert to being manchildren with mummikins always there to sort out the details. Even though mummikins isn't playing ball anymore.....
Fortunately, they have brought some added value. Great taste in music. Never afraid to share it. Even when we're trying to sleep.
    Caravan Palace La Caravane

the world loves a trier.................. eh?

It's the famous Admiral Fallow, DC.

This theme must be our reward for helping get the listening figures up.At least I hope so.

Still, the prospect of f***book, the vox pop texters and Amanda (age 7) getting in touch to day she recently heard Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time lies before us.

On the subject of which, didn't our hero do well to resist closing with BR on Thursday. I felt proud of them both.

after a week of prattling on about this artist I thought it best to leave it out for a while but Monday's theme seems like a good excuse to get back to the campaign....

I Was Everyone - Joan As Police Woman

That's the fourth different track now requested from the "The Deep Field".....need I say more!

As it happens I've just loaned the CD to my daughter, where it it will undoubtedly become the coaster of choice on the coffee table. If I ever see it again I might get it back scratched, stained, warped and DEFINITELY minus the cover.

  • Comment number 18.

no prizes for guessing I'll nominate

The Low Anthem - Ghost Woman Blues

from the album Smart Flesh, superb, unlike anything else I can think of and brilliant concert in Òran Mòr

I've been listening to Joe Bonamassa for a few months now, but only heard for the frist time today

Joe Bonamassa - Bird on a Wire

now for someone to persuade me to listen to something by Leonard Cohen, it has to pretty darned special - I commend it to the production team as a perfect way to give Joe his first play on GIO! The listeners won't be disappointed

Well, worryingly our hero writes that he wants to know about all the new (and old) music we've discovered which isn't quite the same as saying he's going to play it.

Thus far, accordingly to the blog choices, it'll be the most eclectic, edifying and enjoyable edition of GIO -and if the production team are brave enough to go through with it - abandoning 'drivetime classic pop and golden oldies' - it will be a complete revelation.

Over the last couple of years, partly due to GIO and mostly due to my blogging peers, the depth and width of my musical enjoyments expands like an endless musical universe - I hardly know where to begin with the theme.

This has led to an unexpected development: I have become obsessed with findling new music I wasn't hitherto aware of and GIO contributes to this by providing a way of finding new music in an unplanned way - not by listening to the show, but researching thematic requests. I sometimes even listen to the genre specific shows after the 8:00 PM watershed!

On the night we were doing the numerical countdown, I got stuck on 'eight' and typed 'Eight' into Spotify.

I spotted Standing Eight Count - Jakob Dylan and gave it a play.Brilliant. So although it's his Dad's birthday this month,we could do the unexpected and play the son. Musically, the parallels with Bob are obvious enough, but that's no bad thing, and this is just different enough to be outstanding on its own terms - nice trumpets.

There are zillions of others like this but I'll need to go though and try to remember where they came from.

More to follow, but in closing for the moment, a huge thank-you to GIO and especially the blogotariat for some fantastic insights and recommendations which have brightened things up over the last couple of years.

For most of that time I have been incredulous that music I'm aware of just doesn't get heard.

Eventually the question was "Well, what are you going to do about it?"

Unable to resist either temptation or a challenge, the answer was obvious.

#9 there's an O.G.W.T. feel to this theme (wonder who'd have suggested that) obviously ignored the Annie Nightingale suggestion though ;-)

  • Comment number 30.

Paul Handley / Joan As Policewoman is a great shout, been enjoying her music for a while and you should check out her previous lp's. I Defy is a great track with Antnoy Hegarty.

  • Comment number 31.

#24 yes Gaie and I make no apology, I never get fed up listening to whiney Neil!

#30 thanks for the tip Norrie, i'll add it to the lengthening list of past-life catch ups that i need to deal with! It still includes many albums from the 60s and 70s but, yes, i'm conscious of the need to keep up to date!

    Paul,

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Neil Young's guitar solo on 'Southern Man' is awful beyond words.

Nae wunner Ronnie Van Zant wis scunnered!

    Speaking of guitars.......

Re: The Twangmasters: The Art of the Lead Guitarist

This show was broadcast this very morn on Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio4, and y'all can catch it on
    Listen Again.

This is a wee gem. (Ritchie Blackmore's contribution is most amusing). Indeed, I recommend it without reservation to anyone who has even the slightest interest in popular music.

P.S. Presented by Nick Barraclough, who, when he was spinning discs for the Ö÷²¥´óÐã, delighted his audience by playing 'Ode De Toilet (The Toilet Song)' - Brad Paisley

The song proved so popular that the aforesaid audience demanded he play it again.

    And again.

    And again.

Obviously a show where the listeners choose the music...

Into The Murky Water - The Leisure Society

Gorgeous. In parts like The Penguin Cafe Orchestra but with good songs. Amazon one clicked this and the previous 'Sleeper' album. Interesting band, worth researching.

I've recently discovered that modern music is mince. Southern Man is a great song. Neil Young plays with his heart and not his head (I myself use a plectrum). Get hold of Ragged Glory, sit between the speakers and turn it up. This is what music is about.

  • Comment number 39.

some more songs which I happen to like:

    Grace - The View

    Lucky Girl - Patti Scialfa

Well, I'm glad you said it Adam -I didn't want to be over critical in case they bring Colin and Justin back but how many times did we hear 'Born Under A Bad Sign' requested but to no avail. Not wishing to offend Mr Git or his girlfriend in any way but ....well, it reminds us of just how good our hero is.

Checking back on the 'recent' playlist on the henripod the following crop up - many have some connection to GIO: this reflects the massive contribution The Blogotariat and Radio Scotland music programmes have made to widening my musical enjoyment. It would be great to hear any of these on GIO, and although most are connected to GIO one way or another, only two have appeared on the show previously - which shows how influential the Blogotariat is, with me at least.

All We Make is Entertainment - Manic Street Preachers

    lyrics might be miserable -
That congregation has long ago deserted
And we discovered was even more despair
    - but the tune's nice and chirpy, unlike, oops, not going there

  • Comment number 70.

Gaie - I am a fairly recent Manics convert too. Great suggestion.

  • Comment number 71.

    Henri's debt to Rikki Ross

Much as I don't always care for Rikki's singing voice or Deacon Blue's lyrics I much admire his skills as an interviewer (first) and as a broadcaster (second).

For years I've kind of flitted around the edges of Randy Newman, always respectful but not totally 'with' it - he seemed occasionally brilliant and occasionally pastiche - an odd mixture of the serious minded laced with cartoon sentimentality

Then, one night recently, Rikki did a Randy Newman special and I sat up past the 8:00pm watershed to hear it - after which, I ordered up the entire back catalogue - his songs have never been far from my ears since.

It was this one wot done it for me:

I Miss You - Randy Newman

    #69 re Manic Street Preachers

I actually typed out a fairly lengthy (for me but obviously not up to HH standards) post about how my Bro-in-Law Steve, who was banished to Welsh Wales in the 1980s, kept telling me about the Manics. Only recently have I taken his advice and given them an airing on ayechoons.

Out of time is an absolutely brilliant cover & I commend it tae the hoose.

BTW, what's the themes for the rest of the week? Can I fit in a request from The Wall to celebrate Roger Waters concert next weekend in Manchester (to which I'm going with the afore-mentioned bro-in-law)?

Advice from fellow bloggers would be appreciated

that track was the first of theirs I heard, recommended by Norrie. Then I forgot about them again till Postcards came out.

Have you tried Mostly Autumn (#59)? they cite Pink Floyd as among their influences.
