Well, K T Tunstall & Frank Sinatra genuinely took me by surprise. It was guitar heros night- I didn't see that coming at all, so it wasn't utterly predictable:-))

Agree the theme should be run again next week with a different emphasis - plainly there is a demand for it - so much so that no one even bothered to record what they were chomping as they listened.

If the production team are following their proletarian instincts it should be a dead cert, though we need to get Bryan's balls back on and stop pandering to off theme suggestions by mothers whose performing children are learning K T Tunstall on guitar.

And now, my mind drifts on to Donna Summer... how she reminds me of my mother..

#4 Mebbe a wee jazz theme might not go amiss, too. Not talking about the impenetrable improv stuff that requires a heavy dosage of alcoholic or other chemical whatevers to help it along. But, hey - if somebody would like to hear that sort of stuff, I'm not saying they shouldn't ask for it. Just ..whatever... anyway, another take on "jazz" - it's a coveritall term that could do with some redefinition so as not to scare folk away from their worst experiences of whatever they thought jazz was. Getting all defensive here. I like jazz. Others hate it. Our understandings of what jazz is may be the same, it may not be. Who cares? I care only inasmuch as I would like to hear my take on jazz played. I'm off to pop that "get off your high horse" pill.

Did you know Stretch were supposed to be fleetwood mac, at least on an american tour to fulfil a contractual obligation which Mick Fleetwood had signed. Not surprisingly the tour collapsed when audiences realised there were no original members playing. Out of the ashes of that tour came one hit wonders stretch with one of the best white disco songs of the 70s.

Stretch were the first "proper" band I ever experienced live (Supported Rainbow at Playhouse. I suspect JfE was there too).

Much of the 'soul' disco (as opposed to pop disco) featured tremendous musicians and musical arrangements and great vocals and harmonies. I might not be dancing round my carbonara but i could listen sll night long.

Gaie, I think some of the artists you have mentioned have recorded more than one track, it's just that they're not on the playlist!

well last saturday for the first time in 4 decades i went to see scotland play.
changed days indeed from a muddy terracing.
(nivver mind what ye read it was a decent game wi' 3 goals in the last ten minutes , disputed decisions and controversy.....ye'll no get much more for £35)
however what interested me just as much was the pre-match entertainment and more specifically the music played in the last 10 minutes before the start of the game.
there were 50000 in the stadium when the first chords of 'dignity' struck up.
(it gave me the opportunity to marvel at the words yet again). there was genuine emotion when that song was played...the stadium sang along and it was clear that this song struck some emotional chime in the crowd.they loved it.
no sooner had the west coast sunset drawn on 'dignity' then the first thumping chords of '500 miles' struck up.it was even more clear that this song struck a further chord with the crowd (great song, i think they identify with the twa singers as well...how could you not.). the stadium was rockin' and rollin'.
then the first chords of 'loch lomond' struck up (not a song i particularly like) and once more it was evident that this was a song that totally engaged the scottish psyche. and why not, its got a pretty catchy singalong chorus.
so there we had it. confirmation that these songs are very highly popular and loved.
and the impression was that these were songs never to tire off.
probably why they're always requested... and why not they're great songs and great fun.

but anyway disco music.......will never forget one impromptu disco at a post-wedding soiree in a maisonette in 'the wyndford'. i had been the best man and we were back at the brides parents, it was 1975, the wee perty was in full swing....the living room floor was full of revellers dancin' away to this fabulous number....

I got to see Chic live at the Appollo at the height of their fame.At the age of 29 I was no disco kid but the sheer musicianship of the band led by Nile Rodgers blew me away."Good Times" was as good as it could possibly get for Chic but their collaberations with Sister Sledge ,Diana Ross and Sheila B.were great too so would be cool to hear "Spacer" or "Lost in Music".Mary Doll, agree a wee Jazz(ish)night would be great.Everything from Ella ,Billie through to Kurt Elling and Madeleine Peyroux would be cool,Cheers Willlie Bartke

Nope, I've just watched the video on you tube ( Xmas Special TOTP 1974 - the gruesome Hairy Cornflake and his midget friend making odd moronic noises to introduce the song).

I'm completely serious.

If the National Anthem was 'I Was Born With A Smile On My Face' instead of all this dirge stuff about lost battles with our neighbours, it would transform the country's outlook and make us a happier, forward looking nation.

I'm fed up looking over my shoulder to the past and the importance of our 'cultural heritage' - baggage more like it. - about an ancient Scotland that was 'fought and died for' and lost hundreds of years ago - so what - it's just irrelevant to my life.

How about an anthem about a Scotland that's worth living for?
