Country boy...

Bryan Burnett | 20:05 UK time, Friday, 9 September 2011

Tonight's show was a fab way to end the week and I hope it set you up for the weekend. I used to love listening to those kind of shows on the radio as I got ready for a Friday night out which as you now know ended up at the all night baker scoffing on rowies.

Monday kicks off a week of different genre themes and it's Scotch Gits suggestion of country music ....now where did I put that Brad Paisley CD?

#2 Careful what you wish for Scotch I'm already struggling to keep numbers under control but just a wee bit worried it will be, and I don't mean any disrespect to Dolly & Mr Cash, the same old stuff.

Let's think positive, they can borrow my CDs if they want.

    Starter for 10
Colder Weather / Zac Brown Band

Given the sad anniversary on sound may I suggest:

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Grand Central Station

I paid my way out on the 42nd Street.
I lit a cigarette an' stared down at my feet.
Imagined all the ones that ever stood here waitin',
    At Grand Central Station.
    Grand Central Station.

And now Hercules is starin' down at me.
Next to him's Minerva an' Mercury.
Well, I nod to them an' start my crawl, flyers coverin' every wall:
Faces of the missing are all I see.

All too late of course, but now I come across a disco version of Strangers In the Night - by Engelbert, of all people. Worth hearing for curiosity.

Disappointingly, I have been unable to trace a country version of Strangers In The Night so all help would be appreciated. I have this idea that if it works for guitar heros then it's a universal song which can fit every theme and we can hear a version every night this week.

But..... what I'd really like to hear is..

Sleeping By the Ferris River - Ann Brun all the way from Norway comes some great songwriting and fantastic slide guitar - from the album, Live In Stockholm. Just magnificent, luminous, unmissable. Try it.

  • Comment number 51.

Not wishing to complain of course, as if, but would have been nice if it was just blues, mind - we've waited a long time only to have it diluted and open to interpretation by the inclusion of soul.

    I'm just saying.

    SG, is a blues expert?

    Sounds like a complaint...

  • Comment number 54.

I'm delighted we're finally going to get our blues night, Norrie - I just wish they had the courage to go all out. Then have soul another evening. I don't think that's a lot to ask - blues music has been around, evolving and influencing for well nigh 100 years; I should have thought there was scope and diversity enough to fill a couple of hours without putting nervous listeners off their spinach risotto.

However, at the moment I'm grateful for what we're about to receive.

Thing I'm a wee bit confused about is why, given all the bluesy requests made on geetar night, they think they need to add anything into the mix.

Sorry to get all whatever - but, OMG! That's one handsome lad in that there photie. And he's singing country?? Eh? That can't be right. I thought all male country artists were (and looked) drink-addled and full of tales of misspent youth passed them by. Not living in the same country. And the women? Nothing but hard-luck stories of being mistreated by good 'uns gone wrong, drink-addled, youth passed them by. There might have been a tractor in there, somewhere, too. Or a combine harvester. But him??? I must be older and more cynical than I thought.

Anyways - I've read enough of fellow bloggers comments to realise country is sacred here and they know their stuff. I do like it too, but am very much a novice. Am going to avoid any klangers and just reask for one:
