Power pop...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Tuesday, 13 September 2011

I'm glad we had a very broad interpretation of jazz tonight as despite everything being rooted in one genre we had one of the most varied sounding programmes we've had in ages. We covered everything from swinging pop to jazzy hip-hop with some of the big names in jazz in there with one or two surprises. Good covers of pop songs as well and I loved both Jamie Cullum doing Don't Stop the Music and Jimmy Scott's Heaven.

Tomorrow night it's 'pop'. I realise that everything could be considered pop(ular) music but in particular we are thinking about chart music and the kind of pop that's aimed at teenagers - but secretly enjoyed by the rest of us as well.

    Paul,

Why not go all the way and request Jilted John? Here we go! (2, 3, 4)

My advice is to get on your knees and plead with the moderators to remove comment #33

If that doesn't work, settle your financial affairs and make your peace with God.

  • Comment number 35.

#33, #34. Very good advice Scotch. How very dare he! He's been blogging long enough to know there can be only one JfE!!! It's not even as if I'd requested Dana!!!! I think he should 'Shaddappa his face'!!

    P.S. ;o)

  • Comment number 36.

#34, 35, ha ha, OK i've said my prayers.....no argument with the quality Julie......but the quantity has only been exceeded by Norrie this week!!!

  • Comment number 37.

What can I say! I've just happened to think of a few songs I'd like to request this week! Not that it makes any difference at all to what's played mind ;o).

  • Comment number 38.

I think it's about time for another interactive 'The Chain' type show...I like them...or one of the shows where they play a song with with a 5-word title followed by a 4-word one etc etc. They're always good shows.

  • Comment number 39.

Quite sad I know but I like it:

    Jessie J - Price Tag

  • Comment number 40.

    Blur - Girls and Boys

  • Comment number 41.

#20 Facebook contributions seem to get a lot of mention - but it's not for the Meeks!

    A few quick Pop suggestions:

    ELO: Livin' thing
Groovejet (if this ain't love): Sophie Ellis Bexter
    Toto: Hold the line
Ace of Base: All that she wants
    Miami Sound Machine: Doctor Beat

  • Comment number 42.

what makes for a great pop song for me?
well its got to have a great melody AND it has to have endurance or the prospect of endurance (how to gauge i hear you ask.... jessie j price tag)

    'waterloo'...................abba ( the WOW factor)

'p.s. i love you'...........the beatles (how sentimentally poignant)

'come up and see me, make me smile'........cockney rebel (just lacks a slight inject of the uillean pipes in these gaps, but no-ones perfect)

'moonlight shadow'...............mike oldfield/maggie reilly (with a hint of glesga)

'concrete and clay'........unit 4 plus 2 (gorgeously anachronistic)

'just like heaven'..........cure (show me show me show me a better song!!!)

'where have all the flowers gone?'.........peter paul and mary (timeless melody)

'wouldn't it be nice'.........beach boys ( the lyrics are also fabulously heartrending)

'its getting better'.................cass elliot (no further comment required. could be the best ever pop song sung by unarguably the greatest female vocalist of all time)

'make your own kind of music'.......cass elliott ( ditto squared......the best female pop song ever recorded sung by the greatest ever female vocalist bar none)

    cheers frae the dale

  • Comment number 45.

Scotch, how many identities do you actually have?

  • Comment number 46.

I am in no doubt that 'pop' is a genre (style) on its own.

For me, it is characterised by a good melody line, singable lyrics and is not of any other easily or especially recognisable genre(style). Above all, it stands the test of time - i.e. when you hear it you think " I'd forgotten how great that was".

Therefore, ironically, for me, 'pop' music seldom reflects what is currently in the charts and because of the pleasure in hearing it occasionally, is probably not in your own record collection. This automatically deletes novelty records, like 'Ernie' and 'The Worzels' etc and anything to do with Xmas and anything recurringly heard on GIO. Generally speaking they should be happy and optimistic in outlook.

    Personal favourites are:

    Heartache Ave - the Maisonettes

Everlasting Love - the Love Affair

Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum

    Pinball Wizard - the Who

Yesterday Has Gone - Cupid's Inspiration

Midnight At The Oasis - Maria Mildaur

I Got The Music In Me - Kiki Dee

    The Happening - the Supremes

    Nothing Rhymed - Gilbert O'Sullivan

Do It Again - The Beach Boys

    Secret Love - Kathy Kirby

How Can I Be Sure - Dusty Springfield

I could go on for ever but don't want to hog the stage here;-))

    tonight's McCartney suggestion:

Come and Get It or Day After Day - Badfinger

    tonight's Beatles suggestion:

I Feel Fine - The Beatles

    how could I forget?

The Resurrection Shuffle - Ashton Gardner & Dyke

Monkey Spanner - Dave & Ansel Collins

The 60s were THE decade for perfect pop records.Chip Taylor(John Voight's brother) knew a thing or two about writing great pop songs and restyled one of his biggest hits ,The Troggs "Any Way That You Want Me "for Evie Sands, the great white soul singer and Dusty's favourite then.A massive hit in the U.S.it was criminally overlooked here.An absolute pop classic.Bob Gaudio was the producer for the Four Seasons and copied Phil Spector's wall of Sound for another 60s classic "Rag Doll"and lastly Phil Spector himself who reached his zenith with his Wagner meets Motown masterpiece"River Deep,Mountain High"for Ike and Tina Turner. Here's a laugh. In 1966 nobody knew in the UK who Ike and Tina Turner were really and I remember someone who thought the singer was called Ikantina Turner, seriously!Similar thing happened at Isle of Wight where a certain country singer was introduced as Kris Tofferson,Cheers,Willie Bartke

  • Comment number 49.

#48,great list Henri!I love "Yesterday has Gone"and Bryan played it for me a year or two back. You could pick any of the Supremes 60s songs, virtually all classics.Cheers,Willie Bartke

Henri Hannah is King! "good melody line, singable lyrics and is not of any other easily or especially recognisable genre(style). Above all, it stands the test of time - i.e. when you hear it you think " I'd forgotten how great that was". "

Of course! Nailed the theme perfectly:

    Mary-Doll,

What you need is a Character Map. I'm not sure how to set it up. Gaie supplied the link, and my flatmate installed it.

It gives you the option of approx. 160 different typefaces, and you cut & paste the characters you wish to use.

Depending on what size you want the blank comment to be, paste twice. Once at the top, then scroll down and paste again at the bottom.
