Strictly in 3D for Children in Need! Go behind-the-scenes...
The Ö÷²¥´óÐã has been testing out what Strictly Come Dancing could look like in 3D, as a way of supporting this year's Ö÷²¥´óÐã Children in Need ³¦²¹³¾±è²¹¾±²µ²Ô.Ìý
It's the first time the Ö÷²¥´óÐã has tried anything like this, and the finished film - of Flavia Cacace's ArgentineÌý"Tango Unleashed"Ìýfrom the show, together with Pudsey in 3D - will be showing on 3D cinema screens and 3D TV screens around the UK for 2 weeks from 12th November 2010.Ìý
Sadly, we can't bring you the 3D filmÌýhere (as you need special 3D glasses to view it!), but if you fancy going behind the scenes to see how it all happened, have a look at this short film.

Is the Ö÷²¥´óÐã going to create a service compatible stereoscopic 3D format eg. eg. with a main view + difference view so viewers can choose to watch either the 2D version or the stereo 3D version (eg. if they have a "3DTV")? Maybe the Freeview decoder could also give the option to convert to red+blue/red+cyan etc. anaglyph 3D (like youtube allows you to for 3D).

The interocular distance had to continuously change to get the shots required to capture the various moves in the dance. There is a software programme which is used to adjust the rigs and therefore before the actual zooms the lenses are automatically adjusted to match both left and right eye during the zooms.
We're not broadcasting the 3D dance on television unfortunately. It is released for cinemas in 2k format and will be shown across the country.
Hope these clear things up. Cheers

Surely increasing the distance past the distance of human eyes will make things look miniature instead of as things are in real life.
Also, why is the UK Ö÷²¥´óÐã license fee being used for things that won't be broadcast on UK TV?
Will the Freeview and iPlayer be changed so that they will be able to show stereoscopic 3D for future programmes that will be broadcast?

It is for such a good cause and the actual dance itself when shown on Strictly got such a fabulous response maybe more people should be made aware that it is in cinemas right now!
A tweet would reach a much wider audience and I think would encourage people to donate for CIN. :)

I am surprised that someone with your obvious knowledge and inquisitive understanding of future technology should ask a question such as:
"Also, why is the UK Ö÷²¥´óÐã license fee being used for things that won't be broadcast on UK TV?"
Commercial Stations want a return on all their programmes to sweeten the shareholders and in these times of diminishing revenue from advertising, such projects as Research & Development have their Budgets pared to the bone.
If you watched the clip then you must realise that everyone involved is on a learning curve like the track of a Trident missile. I may be wrong but I do not think that Colleges include a syllabus on this technology yet.
Therefore The Suits at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã have taken the decision to use projects such as Children in Need as a testing ground to train and develop their Directors, Editors, Cameramen et al in using this technology to benefit us, the Licence payers in the future.
Without making these sorts of financial decisions, progress in Communication Technology would be much slower.
Well done Ö÷²¥´óÐã, I hope that you use these examples when negotiating with HMG to justify your account expenditure as it is the positive side of what the Ö÷²¥´óÐã do best and why you are still in the forefront of Broadcasting.
Keeeep Dancing!!!
PS I now have to take a cold shower after seeing Flavia in that costume again.
