Tess is in her forties and is married to local comprehensive deputy head teacher , with whom she adopted (Stuart). She is a counsellor at the same school as her husband, providing ‘welfare support’ to the students. As a result, Tess is one of the few people who understands , as they see each other for weekly sessions.

Tess is one of life's givers; she herself comes very low on her list of priorities. She sits with on the council, and is his devoted ally in his fight against . Tess does everything she can to try and maintain the peace between Colin and Fats, who are at constant loggerheads with each other.
