At the end of the 4th and final round of the Oban Area Coaching Committee's First Shinty League the Lismore Camanachd Club were placed 2nd in the 'C' League, after Rockfield 'C'. There were six boys in the successful team viz Callum, Colin, Connor, Keiran, John and Murray, they all received a medal. The games were all played indoors at Atlantis Leisure.

The Shinty Club meets on a Monday after school and there are now three girls, Aileen, Eilidh and Flora coming along as well. The next league the team will be entering is the Outdoor 6-a side in Oban.

Foster Yeoman鈥檚 offer of assistance with shipping petrol supplies from Port Appin to Lismore is strictly short term, to allow a longer-term solution to be found. The company has agreed to provide the service until the end of the month. A&BC had a meeting arranged with Foster Yeoman on the 14 March at which they will establish the scope for extending the arrangement for carrying petrol to Lismore, in the absence of a longer-term arrangement being put in place before the end of March.
Since the public meeting called by the Community Council on 22 February, the Community Council had written to the Chief Executive, A&BC, to ask the council to take the initiative in finding a sustainable solution to the supply of petrol to the island.
Mr. Brown (A&BC) had discussed with the MCA the scope for permitting the resumption of petrol supplies via the Port Appin ferry in the short term, but was advised that the vessel was fundamentally unsuitable and that the nature of adaptations which would make it suitable would be extensive to say the least and would not allow a solution within a short time span.

Councillor Robertson had requested Councillor Gillies鈥� assistance in seeking a solution to the petrol supply crisis. Cllr. Gillies had written to and telephoned the MCA鈥檚 Senior Marine Superintendent at Glasgow, Captain S. Grewal. He had received a written response from Ian MacRae, of the MCA鈥檚 Southampton office, which explained the background to the service of the Prohibition Order, declined to agree to a two month period of latitude on the use of MV Lismore whilst other arrangements were put in hand, and indicated that it was unlikely that the MV Lismore would be able to comply with the requirements for the issue of a Document of Compliance for the carriage of dangerous goods.
Cllr Gillies referred to a similar crisis experienced on the Isle of Coll, when the Army had taken petrol to the island. It was suggested that it might be worth approaching the Army to ask whether it could assist Lismore. Secretary was also asked to renew his attempts to discuss with Scottish Sea Farms (South Shian) whether they might be able to assist with an interim solution.
In answer to a question about the possibility of Lismore developing a project to install a community-owned bulk petrol tank and pump, Cllrs. Robertson and Gillies confirmed that A&BC and officials would provide support for fast-tracking the necessary formal applications for local authority approval. Dr. McNicol added that he thought that Appin Community Enterprise would probably offer to assist such a scheme, financially and with other support.

You may be aware that the RMT Union is currently balloting its 400 members on strike action or industrial action up to strike action.

The ballot has commenced and is being conducted for the union by the Electoral Reform Society. The result is due on Monday, March 14 and it is for the union then to communicate the outcome. They are also legally obliged to give the company seven days notice of any action they may wish to take and when.

The company is awaiting the outcome of the ballot and is meantime continuing dialogue with various union representatives.

CalMac Managing Director Lawrie Sinclair has written to all employees assuring them that their terms and conditions will not be diminished in any way as the Company prepares to launch its bid for life line ferry services on the Clyde and in the Hebrides.

The company fully appreciates that the current situation is uncertain and apologises for any inconvenience this may be causing.

The company will keep customers and staff fully informed of any changes in the situation and meantime would seek to assure customers that they should continue with bookings as normal. In the event of any industrial action, full refunds will be given.

The ballot followed the company鈥檚 failure to provide assurances that there would be no compulsory redundancies and no worsening of pensions, pay and conditions for its present or future workforce.

The union had sought the assurances after advertisements seeking tenders for the Gourock-Dunoon route were placed last month.

鈥淥ur members have voted decisively for action to defend their jobs, pay, conditions and pensions,鈥� said RMT general secretary Bob Crow.

鈥淲e will now be consulting with our port committee to decide on the next steps.

鈥淎fter three weeks鈥� silence from the company, I hope they will now see fit to get around the table with us to negotiate guarantees for the terms and conditions of the people who work hard to provide these lifeline ferry services,鈥� Bob Crow said.

RMT Strike Action Latest (Tue 15th at 15:00hrs)

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne has issued details of services which should remain unaffected on Wednesday 23 March 2005 when the RMT has called a strike of their members from 1200 midday until 1200 midnight. The following routes should be unaffected and should operate to normal timetables.

Ballycastle - Rathlin Island
Colintraive 鈥� Rhubodach
Fionnphort 鈥� Iona
Lochaline - Fishnish
Oban 鈥� Lismore
Sconser 鈥� Raasay
Tarbert/Portavadie/Lochranza
Tayinloan 鈥� Gigha

All other services apart from those listed above will be affected by strike action.

The RMT have confirmed they will complete all homeward legs commenced prior to midday. Any ferry which departs before 12:00midday is expected to sail as per timetable.

The following small ferry services are, however, likely to be involved in the strike action and disruption to normal services is expected.

The MV 鈥淎licat鈥� operating on the Gourock 鈥� Dunoon route will maintain her normal timetable on Wednesday 23 March 2005.
