London

I sit here on holiday just now, thanking my lucky stars that my trip to London was on Tuesday this week. I've spent most of the day emailing friends and family (as I've no mobile reception here or a landline). Finally got the email from the only friend who hadn't replied about 10 minutes ago.

I hope that all our friends and families who are down there are safe and well.

The only thing concerning me know, is that the Met is recalling all their police officers from G8 duty. With the rest of the Summit Leaders apparently staying on at Gleneagles, I pray that there are no other attacks whether down South, or here in Scotland.

Commonwealth Games Part 2

Called home earlier in the week just to check everyone was okay while I'm getting away from it all.

Got told that I had a phone call from Australia from the Commonwealth Games folk... They called at 1.30am and woke the rest of the house up. How popular was I?

On the plus side, they are calling back next week to speak to me!

HURRAY!

The Phone Call......

Lying in bed last night when the phone rang at 12.30am. It was David calling from the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Volunteer Unit. Did I mind talking?

Had a lovely wee phone call with him, answering all his questions and telling him that I'd be over in March next year for as long as they needed me. Explained I'd have somewhere to stay in three suburbs of Melbourne all with good transport links.

Will find out if I've got through in August sometime.

On a different note - it was only 12C in Melbourne yesterday, and it went down to 4C last night...

The latest Harry Potter

Started the book in Tesco's car park on Monday night. Finished it about 11.30ish.

Now re-reading all the previous books again in case I missed something.

JK Rowling - she certainly knows how to write a cliff hanger...

Moon Landings

Just read Small Isles blog link re the Moon Trees.

We have regular "discussions" about whether or not anyone has landed on the moon.

With all the hype about government cover ups etc, the space race between Russia and the USA I'd like to ask a question to get your thoughts on the matter.

The space race (for want of a better phrase) started with launching rockets, then it progressed to rockets with animals (dogs/monkeys), then there was the first manned flight into space and the return. Now it was very much a case of one country leading the way with the other following as quickly on their heels as possible.

What a huge part of the "family discussions" is, why didn't Russia ever land on the moon. If America were doing it - why didn't they follow on the heels of them.

How come no-one has landed on it during the last generation?

That usually leads to the whole question of building a space station, where it can be hit by space debris when it may have been "safer" to build it on the moon. As if moon buggies can be taken and driven on the moon (must go and google this to find out if it really did happen or if that's just an urban myth), surely other types of machinery could be taken there.

So leaving out the "cost" factor, what do you think on the following:

Has there been a moon landing?
Why have Russia (or any other country that has astronauts) never gone to the moon?
Would it have been safer to build the space station on the moon?

I'm truely blogging this as a bit of fun!

Sports & Raft Race Weekend

So we are now counting down the days to one of the busiest weekends of the Island's year.

Friday night will see islanders and visitors dancing the night away in the Hall to the wee hours of the morning. There will be those who are "pacing themselves" for the weekend's events, those that are "saving themselves" for the tug-o-war competition and those who are just there for the whole shebang!

Saturday will see Sailean bay full of home made rafts, some sleek, lots not so sleek. I'm wondering if there will be any rafts that are just wardrobes this year!
There's also the judging of the best named raft.

Then on Saturday night it's up to Baligarve for the Annual Barbeque and Barndance. This is the last year that Anne and Donnie are hosting the event, but have assured islanders that they are more than welcome to use the barn in coming years.

Iris (South Team's Coach) has apparently secured an anchor for the South's Men Tug O War team. George McColl is in New Zealand (there's a plus point for loads of competitors and also the South Men's Team). Maybe this year the South will manage a clean sweep and win the Children's pull, the Ladies' Pull and the Men's Pull.

Oh look - flying pink pig just going by the window.....
