I will admit that I *do* miss trees sometimes. And rivers. And brooks. And lakes to swim in. And warm weather. But Orkney deffinately is a beautiful place filled with very nice people!

Orkney has trees: go down to Gyre in Orphir for an English country lane walk & then do the Orcadian Coast round to the Bu. Visit the Earl's Bu as well. There are lochs to swim in as well in Orkney. Many burns worth looking at: Rackwick in Hoy for example. Orkney also has warm spells (18 degrees) at times. But the wind removes the heat!! Scallowawife: Not her Granny - but everything I think.

Where are the lochs to swim in? Are they full of soft mud that I will sink in if I wade out?? I've run into that here and thought I would sink out of sight for sure!

You can swim in the lochs - but to be honest it would be at your own risk. Much better off in the sea (if you had a wet suit).

Eileen, she dusno bide on Hoy. She bides on the Mainland o Orkney, west side I believe. There are some Hoy bloggers on this site but they have been conspiciously quiet recently.

So...I traded my quiet cabin in the Alaskan woods for the howling winds of Orkney and life on a farm.
