New to BH? Watch out, this post contains spoilers from series one...

Ìý

He was an evil genius with plans for world domination, but somewhere along the line it all went horribly wrong (unless being eaten by a werewolf was actually part of the plan?).Ìý Herrick had the brains, the organisation and the will to succeed, but was stopped in his tracks by a trio who were, let's be honest, a bit rubbish when it came down to all that fighting.

Ìý

So this week the big question is... Where did Herrick go wrong?

Ìý

Comments

  • Comment number 1.

He underestimated them. I mean yeah they weren't that good but when they had too they rose to the occasion.

I'd write more but it's toooo hot. :(

  • Comment number 2.

I think it was the whole
'I VANT TO TAKE OVER ZE VORLD, muahahahaha' thing.
That and the fact he thought he could do it alone with only vampire help

  • Comment number 3.

well getting himself trapped in a locked room with a angry werewolf was just about his biggest mistake.

But beside that i think he put too much emphasis on telling the other vampires about how great Mitchell was. If he hadn't spent so much time "bigging" Mitchell up to the other Vampires he perhaps wouldn't have felt the need to make an example of Mitchell when he tried to go back "on the wagon" thus avoiding the whole conflict altogether. phew hope that makes sense :o)

  • Comment number 4.

My husband is standing over my keyboard and he says Herrick was never evil because what else do you expect from a vampire. That's what they are and that's what they do and his only mistake was not killing Mitchell properly when he had the chance!

Personally I disagree but am trying to think up a good response.

  • Comment number 5.

Where did he go wrong? He recruited Mitchell - other than that Im not entirely sure the rest was really his fault...will have a think.

    Hmm good question.

  • Comment number 6.

:D I'm liking the responses so far. I'm convinced Herrick's downfall was his overconfidence and pride. Love him as I do (and I do! Just not more than George, Seth or Mitchell) he had an arrogance that was just begging for a fall and a fall he got from a quarter he'd not considered dangerous. Hehe.

Individually, the trio were too vulnerable to be of consequence (though Herrick acknowledges that Mitchell has a black heart and George has a streak of reckless bravery - he knows too little of Annie, I suspect, to have formed an opinion of her) but he didn't consider their strong bonds with each other which make them formidable if not exactly conventional opponents.

Hehe, I'm waffling. I'd best get off and write my story instead. ;)
    KC

  • Comment number 7.

Knew... he KNEW too little of Annie to have formed an opinion. ^^ He failed to think in a human sense whereby they would be prepared to do extraordinary things to protect each other.

Did he know, do you think, what he had interrupted (Annie's crossing over) when he staked Mitchell?
    KC

  • Comment number 8.

Well I agree with everything that's been said already, especially EveyLou (#3). Very good point. If he'd just shrugged off Mitchell as a lost cause, The Three probably wouldn't have bothered too much about stopping his evil plan. Like George said, they just wanted to be left alone. It was his fixation on Mitchell which was the problem. Or, if you like, as eagle says - recruiting Mitchell in the first place.

Just thinking aloud here but, if you think about it, what are the two types of recruits?

    1) Those like Lauren who are killed when they are not expecting it. Well, they WAKE UP AS VAMPIRES and would arguably have vampire instincts which could be nurtured.

    2) Those who are dying and are given the choice. Well THEY KNOW what they will become and accept this before their death. Thus they can embrace it.

Mitchell, however, was neither. He WAS given a 'choice' (if you can call it that) but, in his eyes, he had NO CHOICE. So, he was backed into a corner over the whole thing. Therefore beginning with a sort of disgust/fear of what he would become. Now I know he went on to have 'the blackest heart of them all' but I am assuming that's because the power, the hunger and the influence of Herrick will have had an effect. But there was always that potential to question and challenge Herrick's actions and what he stood for.

    Hmmmm, just a theory.

Still not a Mitchell fan but I think I may have slightly agreed with eagle there. Damn. lol.

  • Comment number 9.

In fact, damn, I think I pretty much repeated what eagle has said a million times. Well, apart from the seperating out the two types.

  • Comment number 10.

God, where did Herrick go RIGHT?

First off, let's look at the main minions. Mitchell has the world's gayest ninjas. Herrick has Seth (sheer incompetence) and that frumpy chick from the hospital cafeteria.

    Advantage: World's Gayest Ninjas.

Second, George got the help of a priest, later using this combined power of Judaism and Christianity. Did Herrick invoke any of the other major religions of the world? NO!

    Advantage: The side WITH necklaces.

Third, Herrick was basically like those poor, pitiful chicks on trashy talk shows who fall for the bad boy and think they can change him, except in Bizarro World. Herrick wanted the bad boy, not the change. Herrick kept making promises to Mitchell (oh, you'll be this and you'll have that if you come back to me...PATHETIC! Grow a Spine, Herrick) to lure him back, but to no avail.

Basically, Herrick is a codependent baby who needed the security blanket of a vicious Mitchell. Without Mitchell, Herrick was completely ineffective in bringing about the rise of the vampires on his own.

Oh, and he took on the sexy beast that is GEORGE on George's home turf. I mean, DAYUM! George's (well, Russell's) body from episode one to the finale? Holy heck!

    Herrick never stood a chance.

  • Comment number 11.

I think Herrick's mistake was not recognising George's integrity. He thought that George was "too human" to be able to take him out as he didn't think that he could bear to have Herrick's death on his conscience. But what he didn't realise was George's actions were solely for humanity and friendship.

  • Comment number 12.

Lol Sperkii wahey maybe now you've backed my theory people might believe it rather than shrugging me off as a nutcase lol well its kinda similar not exactly the same but pretty much the idea that Mitchell isn't the same as the other vampires...

Finally someone agreeing with me - had to happen some day lol

If the theory is right then I'm a huge Mitchell fan - if it's wrong and essentially theres no reason he should be any different from the others then I think hes a **** lol for a "normal" vampire to kill (as far as Im concerned it was as much his fault Herrick died and he was planning to kill him anyway) one of his own kind thats kinda unforgivable - thats worse than all the humans hes killed.

But like I say if the theory's right then yeah Im a fan :-)

Hmm that was kind of on topic - If we're right and its all about the fact he had a choice then thats where Herrick went wrong.

  • Comment number 13.

Fan vid'ers: Run with the wolves-prodigy (fan vid- that's all I'm saying)

  • Comment number 14.

I'll check it out at some point :-)

  • Comment number 15.

They used Run With Wolves on Unearthed :)

  • Comment number 16.

you have to think about it like this though, if Herrick hadnt turned Mitchell, then Mitchell would have either died in the war, or would be dead now, which would mean no aidan in the show!!! And i dont see Herrick as a bad vampire, like the nomads in Twilight, they are just your typical vampire, doing what they are supposed to do.

  • Comment number 17.

Not saying he shouldnt have recruited Mitchell that would have made for a very boring show lol or else it would have been someone else but that was his downfall...and to be honest not something i can really understand - why make a deal with Mitchell in the first place? He was clearly the stronger of the two and had Seth and the others to back him up he didnt really need Mitchells consent - so im pretty certain there must be something more in that and we're right in that theres a difference between those who have a choice and those who dont and that Herrrick knows it...hmm maybe.

Oh I dunno maybe Herrick was just having an off day lol.

  • Comment number 18.

Did they? Great taste. That is why we love BH.

  • Comment number 19.

    Herrick fail-

His physical and social inadequacies created a needy and overly zealous leader who doubted himself and he also had a very apparent distrust in others.

But mainly he failed by entering the 'tomb' with a werewolf so I agree with EveyLou.

  • Comment number 20.

Lol physical inadequacies perhaps - not strength wise but he didnt have the looks on his side like Mitchell perhaps (sorry Jason :-S) which might have made him attempt to over compensate. But social im not so sure about? and the distrust?

But yeah downfall - going into the isolation room with george really lol which to be honest ive always thought was a little stupid of him - i think it maybe came down to over confidence - he didnt consider the fact that they might outsmart him - it wasnt really that difficult lol all the time when they were saying their goodbyes and herrick was getting ready etc and he was talking - i thought herrick knew it was so obvious i honestly dont think under normal circumstances herrick would have been stupid enough and not even considered the possibility of George going down there instead?

Or perhaps the fact that hes a vampire stopped him thinking it - kinda forgotten the concept of doing something selfless and caring about someone etc.

Oh I dunno think I should just give up trying to figure this out lol thing is there probably isn't a right answer - it probably happened just because Toby thought it'd work for the show - if he tried to explain all of herricks actions maybe even he couldnt. Or maybe I just hate not having all the answers lol.

But yeah I thouhgt that Herrick knew - wehn george said you might wanna get a pen i thought he was gonna tell him to meet him in the woods and then when canteen woman said what about the wolf and he said he usually transforms in the woods...i thought hed sussed it out. Silly man lol.

  • Comment number 21.

oops sorry didnt mean the long post didnt realise :-(

  • Comment number 22.

Well I didn't put that much thought into it. I just wanted to post.

  • Comment number 23.

Well i think that it was his arrogance which was his real downfall, he may well have been like that in life too. Anyone who underestimates others like that and indulges in self-importance is going to end up getting eaten by a werewolf.

  • Comment number 24.

lol fair enough wtc (sorry got out habitof calling you super - just doesnt seem right anymore :-S)

"Anyone who underestimates others like that and indulges in self-importance is going to end up getting eaten by a werewolf." lol of course they are :-D

  • Comment number 25.

hello again all you BH peeps, its been a while!!!

Herricks downfall.....hmmmm......apart from getting locked in a room with a werewolf who would do anything for his friends, literally anything......think he underestimated them completely!!!! A werewolf, vampire and ghost combining should be the ultimate fighting force, but were just a bit, you know, rubbish...but when the it came time to bite the bullet our team of heroes excelled themselves!

As for other news, anyone spot the actress who played lauren in the last scene of an advert for a certain all singing all dancing mobile phone company advert? and i thought they were all random members of the public, sob, sob....

Anywhoos, I'm off to watch the new season of House, its very exciting, my b/f got a diagnosis in 15 mins last season, so its going to be a tough time to beat.....how sad.....

  • Comment number 26.

the t mobile one? how did i miss that...

  • Comment number 27.

yup thats the one...she's got a blue dress on...just spotted it the other day....

26 mins into house and still no joy.......maybe next episode.....

  • Comment number 28.

right will look out for it...lol me and my mum are like that with morse/midsomer murders etc :-) yes it is a bit sad but oh well lol

  • Comment number 29.

I think he saw 'humanity' as a weakness when it turned out that their bit of humanity left was their greatest strenght. And he just could not grasp the concept of love and loyalty and the lenghts people will go to to protect their loved ones.

    Am feeling all profound today!

  • Comment number 30.

he was to full of himself and his hopes were to ambitious. He also underestimated Mitchell, George and Annie.

  • Comment number 31.

nooooooooo nobody reminded me it was russells doctor who tonight its only got half hour left now! :-( please say hes in last half an hour...

  • Comment number 32.

yay there he is :-D all hot and sweaty and mucky...and in uniform you know what i think i might be in heaven lol

  • Comment number 33.

god he really is a brilliant actor isnt he - i know we all knew that anyway but just...yeah great. had the job of explaining who he was at work the other day we were playing hangman (not when we were meant to be doing work obviously :-S) and i did his name and no one had heard of him :-( useless people - history boys - no, little dorritt - no, dr who - no, budgie in gavin and stacey - oh him yeah hes brilliant lol he really should be more famous though i shouldnt have to reel off his sodding cv everyone should know his name hes brilliant.

hmm this dr who episode is confusing me though im kinda failing to see how this super powerful - gonna destroy the earth fella is going to be destroyed by a bird in a fork lift truck thing but hey ho we shall see...

i take it russells character survives though if hes going to be in this years christmas special too.

this program really will be rubbish without david though - dont think theyll ever beat him as the doctor will they.

  • Comment number 34.

here did you know paul kasey was someone in that dr who ep too...didnt catch who but just saw the name and thought ooh - also heard a rumour that hes foxy bingo man lol but not sure how true that is :-D do you think he has a complex or something about his face hence why he always has some form of costume/mask on lol either that or hes actually someone really realy famous who wants to work unoticed...or hes an escaped convict...

    lol who knows :-)

  • Comment number 35.

I know that Paul Kasey was a weevil in Torchwood. And he's been a couple of masked things in Doctor Who too. He's just one of those guys in the costumes. lol

  • Comment number 36.

hmm see i really want to go to the convention - meet him and russell and hopefully a couple of the others but now ive found this course at pinewood and i shouldnt really do both :-S hmm unless i get this job in which case i could quite easily :-D

  • Comment number 37.

Ok, well eagle's off topic, so I'm bloomin well gonna go off topic too

Anyone seen this on YouTube 'Extreme Sheep LED Art?'

  • Comment number 38.

I just love that Foxy Bingo man lol

  • Comment number 39.

Paul plays one of the angel things. Lenora was also in an earlier episode. Now all thats left is for aidan to join the cast

  • Comment number 40.

i cant find anything about him being the foxy bingo man though!!

  • Comment number 41.

i just checked and it definitely is Paul who plays Foxy Bingo Man!!!

  • Comment number 42.

Can I just point out that a few people wanted me thrown off this blog for going off topic. I haven't read back but I can't imagine a more randomly obscure lot of posts as the last lot. :D

  • Comment number 43.

Who the hell wanted you thrown off? :-S yay foxy bingo man :-)

Technically it is on topic in that its about paul kasey whos character killed herrick so there you do :-) although im now picturing herrick being ripped to pieces by the foxy bingo man which is hilarious...

Seriously though why do we think he never shows his face lol

Yep just aidan left now to star in doctor who...personally my vote is for a character that has to wear the same uniform as russell does...ahem - please?

  • Comment number 44.

Super, who wanted you thrown off? (and I think Katy and me discussing the weather wins the most off topic conversation contest. ;) lol)

And eagle, seconded on the Aidan in Doctor Who thing. Maybe he could play Midshipman Frame's crewmate? Then he'd be acting alongside Russell and be wearing the uniform!

  • Comment number 45.

hmm not entirely sold on him and russell acting together on something else thatd be to difficult to shift mitchell and george out of my head :-S but hey if it gets aidan in that uniform then its a sacrifice im willing to make...

  • Comment number 46.

I wonder if anyone can help me out here. Ive been watching Lenora in Sugar Rush on Youtube and there's a song at the very end of ep 1 which sounds like it's being sung by Daman Albarn. I've tried to find it everywhere but to no avail. I don't know if it's him solo or with one of his bands but it's great - it's driving me mental!

  • Comment number 47.

Hi drivingsuzanne it's called Sweet Song by Blur.

  • Comment number 48.

Bless you Bunnybiter thanks for that!

  • Comment number 49.

    Woo!

Sorry that was ust for the Blur mention :-D

  • Comment number 50.

Cant remember who said it but someone said they saw someone who looked like annabel on the t mobile ad? which one did you mean cos ive finally just seen that advert and didnt see a resemblance :-( did you mean the one with the girls talking at the end? after hey jude? thats the one i saw anyway :-(

  • Comment number 51.

Since they changed the music at the beginning of episode 4 with Mitchells little walk does anyone else just keep imagining is this the way to amarillo in the background lol

  • Comment number 52.

this is going to sound completely weird but at least russell does his weird shriekey screamy thing in Dr Who!!! Made the episode enjoyable

  • Comment number 53.

lol its russells trademark :-) that and the green shirt which he also wears in gavin and stacey lol or one very similar :-)

speaking of which foam party episode coming up on bbc3 soon :-D we get to see russell corpse...i mean we get to see russell being the essence of profssionalism and being extremely hilarious...:-D and of course the truly amazing dancing lol cant wait - well i have the dvd but "theres something amazing about watching it live" hehe love that line good old bryn

cant believe weve only done 50 odd posts in a week :-S wonder what tomorrows question will be...i hope they do carry the blog on right the way through - just for the few of us who still come on here lol a little treat for being such loyal fans :-)

thing is we dont know if therell be a third series so this might be the last one then what are we gonna do :-( cant remember life pre being human lol i think i used to go out or something oh and i seem to remember talking to people at the pub rather than just going to use the wi fi to download the latest videos lol suppose ill have to go back to doing that :-S

  • Comment number 54.

same here. there is just something about watching something at the right time its on tv. Just been reminded it is Big Brother tonight, and my flatmate is totally obsessed with it!!!!

  • Comment number 55.

thirteen weeks of pure misery. and no bh to avoid it with. When the celeb version was on, i had bh to turn to

  • Comment number 56.

interesting parallel with Hitler, isn't it? Going into a bunker-type thing and basically deciding/accepting his own fate.. Knowing he's lost and therefore accepting death. Stubborn to the end..

Yes basically he went wrong because he'd lost so much humanity he'd forgotten what human feeling in its strongest formulation can achieve.. what loyal friendship can drive people to do.. the sacrifice for the 'greater good'. Like all tyrants, they can only be defeated by people who are prepared to be their opposite - and therefore totally give up thoughts for themselves and devote themselves to the service of others. George's Kamikaze Werewolf act was unbeatable! (yes i know the japanese werent on our side so my analogy kind of fails but he WAS kamikazi! no i CANT remember how to spell it!)

  • Comment number 57.

Possibly making out with the wierd Hot Chocolate girl?
Possibly egging on a angry George before a transformation to kill him?
Or maybe he was his own worst enemy and the extreme measures he went to, to get what he wanted ending up being his downfall :P

  • Comment number 58.

Herrick wanted too much! He wasn't content with the 'secret' society of vampires he created, and instead wanted to take over the world. Basically, his greed was his downfall IMHO. One of the seven deadly sins and all that.....

Oh and the thumb in mouth kiss with the canteen girl - he deserved it after that! Yuk.
