Episode five had many surprises, but nothing surprised us more than the return of Herrick.

The last time we saw him he was being torn into little tiny pieces by a werewolf but, thanks to the wonder of flashbacks, we got a second chance to view him and Mitchell up to their murderous tricks in the 1960s.

We caught up with living legend Jason Watkins on set to discuss how it felt reprising this much-loved role...

great to see Jason back and having fun - love that he admitted it wasnt so easy - and the happy smiling vampire - lovely!

  • Comment number 2.

Dont think Ive managed first post before! the things that delight us!

I agree with eagle in last post - this ep improves with watching - so much in it - maybe too dense - some of the developments could have taken more room - but still very tense and engaging.
And Im noticing more - the great visuals and lighting - credit to the director (with his lovely accent!)

  • Comment number 3.

And I had a perfect first comment score still great th see Herrick back again in his charming menace

  • Comment number 4.

    aaww...I have missed Herrick....welcome back

  • Comment number 5.

Nothing wrong with having been born in the 60s! :-)

  • Comment number 6.

    Afternoon all...

Loved that video...I still find the concept of filming weird!
Great to see Herrick back...that hair! Jason was only just around in the 60s...apparently, green crimplene was acceptable to wear (for women!) and I've seen some of my ma's knitting patterns...you had to see them to believe them...the costumes on BH are far superior..

Great to see Jason...glad he enjoyed it! How cheeky of Aidan to remind him of his, er, maturity...there's a lot to be said for it...and it won't be long before he's staring 40 in the face..!

Thanks BH PROD TEAM...nice to see his menacing, but smiley, face again...xx

  • Comment number 7.

    Just refreshed...

    VF: Morning/afternoon hun...you well?

Celticgrace: Great score and acting and everything...yeah baby! Love Kenny's D's accent too...nothing like a Celtic accent of any sort (particularly when it's Mitchell but we won't go there right now...its lunchtime)..

  • Comment number 8.

agree anglo - eating lunch and drooling such a bad combination

  • Comment number 9.

Yay! I like Herrick! I mean he's down right evil at times but he's also very right at times!

I was on the market today and saw the almost exact same material as Josie's dress! So I'm gonna be making a josie dress now!

  • Comment number 10.

anglo - you mean kenny the director? isnt he scottish? cant watch this video silly laptop :-( but sure its great - gotta love lord watkins :-P

  • Comment number 11.

Loved Herrick in Ep 5 - I agree so evil but sooo witty. I agree with Firebird (5) nothing wrong with being born in the 60's ahem!*coughs*

  • Comment number 12.

awww nice to see you back jason even if it was for one ep
and there is nothing wrong with being born in the 60's even though i was born in the 80's

  • Comment number 13.

yes kenny glenaan is scottish (from loch lomond I think) - he's got a fascinating cv - some great films/progs - must have been a great experience for the actors.

  • Comment number 14.

Eagle, Celticgrace: Love that Kenny accent!! In my own small wee head Celtic is Scottish/Irish/Welsh...we're all out of the same DNA if you delve far enough back lol...and I love all those accents... particularly Scots and Irish but then I'm biased...xx :D

  • Comment number 15.

Eagle: (10) Sorree...meant to say *there's nothing like a celtic accent..." etc...bit missing there :-)

  • Comment number 16.

Herrick has to be my second favourite vampire! Bless him! And Jason Watkins seems like such a lovely guy too!
And cheeky Aidan, just 'cos he is younger! (Although 80's babies are THE BEST!)

  • Comment number 17.

herrick is the perfect villain: witty and with a heart made of stone...

  • Comment number 18.

@anglo (14) Well if you're going to delve back and look at the DNA the Scots, Welsh and Irish are no more Celtic than the English :-)

  • Comment number 19.

with Herrick I find the most sinister moments are when he looks back on his human life who can forget the moment he talked about the picture book before becoming the destined vampire Messiah again
oh a picture for ep 6 is up I have a feeling this will be Kemp's episode

  • Comment number 20.

Yay! It was great to see Herrick again! Loved his 60's hair too....almost as much as Mitchell's!!

  • Comment number 21.

    A very welcome return...
Hopefully we shall see more of the past relationship between Herrick and Mitchell

  • Comment number 22.

Jason Watkins can do no wrong in my eyes...loved this vid so thanks BHProduction. Interesting to hear him say that he couldn't 'immediately' get back into being Herrick..no sign of that at all in the 60s scenes in eps 5. can't see Herrick making any more appearances which is a real shame.
Bet you were glad to say goodbye to that wig though Jason...!

Switching tack...I see that 'young' Kemp makes an appearance in eps 6...no doubt we're going to find out what the 'shocking' event was that sent Kemp over the edge..I'm wondering if this was a vampire attack on someone he loved..maybe a family member...and I'm wondering if the killer was Mitchell....there has to be some reason that Kemp has been searching for Mitchell and all for a very long time....just a thought.

  • Comment number 23.

Baby is a nice symbol, but clearly Annie's role now is to help other interesting ghosts resolve their earthly issues and either close the door or walk through it, whether she wants to help or not.

  • Comment number 24.

Has anyone noticed the Ö÷²¥´óÐã3 documentary on at 9pm? Vampires: Why They Bite.

It's looking at the popularity of vampire stories, films, TV shows, etc. Radio Times says it features a contribution from Toby Whithouse.

It will also be taking to Charlaine Harris, who wrote the Sookie Stackhouse books that True Blood is based on).

  • Comment number 25.

    Awww, I missed Herrick!

24 - Oooo, may have to watch that! Thanks for the heads up! :)

  • Comment number 26.

I spotted the socumentry... it said it follows how they went from monsters to "romantic lead".... hmmmm... wonder who they're talking about there? he he! Oh darn... forgot to tell little cousin... will tell her to catch up on i-player! She loves all things vampire! lol.

  • Comment number 27.

I didn't realise how much I missed Herrick til this episode, hes just so bonkers and he got some of the greatest one liners this week. I would not mind any further prequels featuring Herrick in the future at all.

(24)Cheers for the reminder about that vampire thing, Frostmaiden, I remember seeing Toby's name and thinking I should watch it. I'll probably watch it later on iPlayer, that way I can skip through to Toby's bits if I get bored. :D

  • Comment number 28.

Watching the documentary. Little bit of BH just now :-)

  • Comment number 29.

They're using quite a bit of BH - You can tell its a Ö÷²¥´óÐã3 documentary!

  • Comment number 30.

Buffy ... Twilight ... it'll have to be BH soon :-)

  • Comment number 31.

    Here you go firebird

  • Comment number 32.

    Time for Michell!

  • Comment number 33.

Documentary was quite interesting just wish the presenter could have stopped wobbling her head! Did the continuity announcer just say something about a final ep???

  • Comment number 34.

Mitchell was in documentary quite a bit & nice to see Toby commenting too. Agree about presenter with wobbly head!

  • Comment number 35.

Oh and presenter called the place at Windsor terrace a flat - wrong! It's a house! Sorry for being picky!

  • Comment number 36.

Agree with 27- didn't realise i was missing Herrick but it was good to see him return =] Really liked the flashack

Yeah saw the vampire doc too- was good to see lots of BH clips!

  • Comment number 37.

Quite right Firebird ..nothing wrong with being born in the 60s.

It was great to see Herrick back - I've really missed him. And this may have already been mentioned but did anyone notice Aidan's "real life" girlfrind played Josie although I don't think they're an item anymore?

  • Comment number 38.

Driving Suzanne (37) someone mentioned that Josie (real name Charlene I think) is/used to be Aidan's girlfriend. I have seen it suggested that he and Lenora might be an item?

  • Comment number 39.

Watching the documentary now, enjoying the glimpses of BH and the Eels on the soundtrack, a band I discovered through Being Human.

  • Comment number 40.

Yay! Jason Watkins how we miss thee (although, I am quite partial to Ivan also)
Any chance of having a character in series 3 who is a doppleganger for Herrick, but is a completely different character, and is human. Distant Herrick relative perhaps. Like what they did in Angel with Darla

  • Comment number 41.

Insert a 'now' in before 'to' and after 'partial' and it would make sense more

  • Comment number 42.

Julia yeah she was played by charlene mckenna - Aidan's ex and "apparently" Aidan and Lenora are an item now - it's kinda obvious by the photos and the press are calling them a couple and they're together a lot but you never know until they've actually said do you lol.

didnt watch the documentary there was something important on the other side but i did flip over in the ad break and saw toby talking about mitchell and a shot of the nodding dog woman in front of the house - I was trying to listen to what she was saying but I was getting a bit sea sick lol.

  • Comment number 43.

i watched that program about the vampires and i agree she really did have a head thing going on but there was an awful lot of our favourite vamp in it so it was good

  • Comment number 44.

    Morning all...

Enjoyed last night's documentary on 3...wish that woman's head wouldve stopped moving quite so much, yes...good though...not enough Mitchell for me!! hehe

Dorina: Didn't blog/tweet last night just seen your post...wonder if it was Kemp's girlfriend or wife that was 'got at' by either a vampire or werewolf? Enough to turn the son of a non-Catholic/Presbyterian minister into a Catholic priest I'd have thought, as a means to an end...having fun guessing the outcome to all this!

  • Comment number 45.

God I love Herrick, he's the most amazing villan. I think its also because Jason has an almost cherubic face but is actually incredibily frightening. The First World War must have been the best time of his life.

Does anyone else also pick up on the homo-erotic-ness of the way he is with Mitchell? Not that I think he had some all-consuming passion for him, but Mitchell does seem to be his weak spot.

  • Comment number 46.

VioletE: Morning! There is a bit of that there, true...he seems quite fixated on Mitchell...the way Herrick was licking his lips when he and Mitchell were in Josie's flat and having the conversation just after he was talking about Lewis Carroll and just before he told Mitchell to "kill that girl"? He was getting worked up about the evil stuff and enjoying it immensely....fab acting from Jason Watkins...bet he's a very interesting guy to talk to...I'd love a convo with him.

  • Comment number 47.

BH PROD TEAM: Now I know this blog post isn't about the music but I just have to say (again) that the music for S2, particularly Episode 5, is absolutely exceptional....I have today, and in fact all blessed week, been humming/singing Herman's Hermit's and Velvet Underground...the poor man who sits next to me now wears his earpieces to his ipod all the time, presumably to block my tinny ,squeaky, flat/sharp voice out of his head.

Whoever was responsible for choosing the sound track for Ep5 in particular....you are fabulous for bringing all these songs to light...my colleagues may not think so but I do, so there!

More of the same on Sunday please....and when the DVDs come out, can it be arranged to have the same sound tracks on them as in the TV series? I know it was difficult for S1 but it adds so much to S2 that I have now watched Ep5 more times than I'd care to admit to - and not just because of the last 10minutes either! - more to do with the first 10 minutes and mainly because of those opening two numbers...

Thanks again for adding hugely to S2..xxxxx

  • Comment number 48.

So Molly bit Sam's last boyfriend? Hm.

Am ignoring the altered version of Josie and Mitchell's first meeting and CMcK's dodge English accent - she gives a credible performance and she's young, she can work on it.

What's bugging me is Mitchell's clothes - wears check shirt/red teeshirt, followed by plain shirt/grey teeshirt, then back to check/red at undertakers, then plain/grey again. Continuity?

  • Comment number 49.

Mustardseed: You think perhaps Molly a little vampire then?

  • Comment number 50.

Yeah theres been a few continuity things...but Mr Teague wasn't too happy at us pointing it out last series lol but Mitchell...maybe he just got changed lol.

Its the bigger things that bug me a bit - the errors with the story - like how Mitchell met Josie...and the fact that apparently this series vampires can go places without benig invited whereas that was a big problem for them last series :-S

My favourite bit though was last series the "howard from the hallifax" scene Mitchell makes his sandwich about 3 times while he's stood there lol Aidan must be too much of a speedy sarnie maker or something :-P

  • Comment number 51.

Agree about the music, it was awesome!
Im so addicted to Velvet Undeground's 'Venus in Furs' now, im constantly playing it on repeat =]

I'm in total agreement with 47, this has been the episode I have watched the most- was fantastic!!!

  • Comment number 52.

eagle eyes (50) - Yes, there are some large continuity errors. If this is how Josie and Mitchell met, why didn't she recognise Herrick in series 1 when Mitchell took her to him?

And there are real inconsistencies in Mitchell's characterisation, too, especially in his interactions with women. In series 1 he was a charmer, a proper ladies' man - just look at the way he seduced Becca in episode 1 and the way he flirted with Nina before inviting her over to dinner in George's name.

But in series 2, he's been tongue-tied and fumbling around Lucy for no good reason, which I would seriously call inconsistent characterisation. I don't believe that it was love at first sight or some such rubbish.

Josie, too - in series 1, she had been presented as just another old lover whom Mitchell had fond memories of. There was *nothing* to indicate that she was the one who had reawakened his conscience, or that she was the only woman in the past forty years who had understood him. That came out of nowhere and frankly ill fits with the series 1 episodes.

  • Comment number 53.

VF: Hi hun...please can you do me a favour if you're on here tomorrow at any point?...can you get onto Twitter and follow me? Just click on my avatar which I am sure you will notice and follow it from there...user name is Angloirishgal, search for me using Find People at the top to the right...I have something to ask you...Hope you're well and are gearing up for this Sunday's ep6...only two more to go after this...where has the time gone? I've been wishing my life away each Monday since 11th January...serve me right!xx

  • Comment number 54.

mbn (52) Some continuity stuff between S1 and S2 definitely but check Ep6 of S1...when he's dying in bed and she offers to save his life, he says "you saved me before"....I think that was the link we had to notice to connect her to something major in his life from 60s...and their canteen scene was touching...and on the hospital bed, before she died, reminiscing about the time he met her in a club (another little continuity problem!) and she said her knees went to spaghetti..

  • Comment number 55.

I'm not really bothered by the continuity, we got a great Josie last year, now we have a different one with an even more intriguing backstory.

Maybe we could have had this be a different woman then have Mitchell bump into her, older later on? But that would feel like a retread of last time.

Nah I think I'll just accept the story as it is. I would be interested to see if/how Toby would explain it, if he would have a way worked out in his head that resolves the two different accounts of their meeting or if he would just say it made for a better story?

  • Comment number 56.

with three days left before we see CenSSA take the full offensive against the reforming undead the fact that a discrepancy or 2 exist is clearly on other blogers minds is depressing the fact that they had the two Vampires taking their first roles towards there places in the world was quite a classic move. Still the fact her legs could have turned to jelly in fear with two killers in the room negates one fact there could be more than one Josie?

  • Comment number 57.

Wonder if we get another blog post tomorrow?....now I'm being greedy! hehe

  • Comment number 58.

Wonder if we get episode 6 clips tomorrow? ....now I'm being obsessive

  • Comment number 59.

Ah yes we haven't had any clips yet, they are normally out by now, maybe as we get into the second half of the series they don't want to give as much away?

  • Comment number 60.

but without the clips what do we have to break into the full blown anticipation with it's just the glimpses we get at the end of last episode and nothing more so we are left with the possibility there are no narrative breaks and the intensity of the episode doesn't have a single moment that doesn't give away the whole plot and our blogs start sounding as if we're mental

    or is that just me?

  • Comment number 61.

Thats true we have gone a bit mad and continuity obsessed without clips. Cliiiiipsss! Cliiiiiiippss!!!! Feed us clips!

  • Comment number 62.

Oh no down the rabbit hole we go and soon to face that smiling cat as the need reaches breaking point and we start referencing Lewis Carrol for no reason.

  • Comment number 63.

I wonder what other books Herrick would enjoy? So far all we have is his childhood picture book and Alice in Wonderland. I want a spin-off called Herrick's Book Club. :D

  • Comment number 64.

#49 Anglo, (several hours later) maybe. I think that there must be something 'wrong' about Sam and Molly.

Also, vampires are the 'undead' but their hair grows?

Something brilliantly bonkers about the level of discussion this programme generates...

  • Comment number 65.

(64)Well, your hair does grow for a couple of days after death. :) Maybe its that process but extended infinitely, vampires are always in the state of someone who has just died.

Also today while rewatching I noticed both Mitchell and Herrick getting a taste of their 21st century jobs, Mitchell the cleaner ("Get mopping!") and Herrick the policeman enjoying that uniform(although that had already been pointed out. This is truly in depth discussion here, I have discovered Mitchell doing a bit of cleaning. :o
    :D

  • Comment number 66.

    63) how about wind in the willows talking with glee about the weasels

  • Comment number 67.

Think it would have taken more than a few days for Mitchell's hair to have grown from the length no doubt sported by a WW1 soldier...

Can't believe I'm even thinking about this, let alone typing it. Tragic.

  • Comment number 68.

Well, new to this blogging, but I have to say I'm totally loving the new series, every single bit! Its about up there on a par with Twilight! I say well done to all concerned for putting the whole thing together, may there be more to come!x

  • Comment number 69.

    66 additional

5 children and It wishes coming true

Maybe Huck Finn the adventure of it all and able to observe the worlds stories from the outside

    or else Dickens

  • Comment number 70.

Is everyone on the blog team preoccupied with Valentines Day, where are the clips, would like to see this Herrick one and the preview for ep. 6 please.
    And more Twitter updates please

  • Comment number 71.

Haha mustardseed, you're not alone ;D

I've spent too much time thinking about this myself, and! I have come to the conclusion that vampires do not age, but their bodies can and do change. Back in S1Ep4, the "Mitchell through the ages" sequence showed us that his hair has been various lengths over the years and he used to have a moustache, too!

Also, AT has put on some muscle since series 1 (although I think he looked better when he was more slender), and I loved that it was acknowledged in ep2 when Annie says, "Oh Mitchell, you've been working out!" ;) So vampires can increase their muscle mass, too.

Clearly these are important things that need to be discussed :D

  • Comment number 72.

Did anyone hear that someone went and did some Being Human graffiti in Bristol, apparantly

  • Comment number 73.

    #72 Banksy?

  • Comment number 74.

mbn (71) I'm glad you spotted that, I was thinking exactly the same but thought that perhaps I was letting my imagination run away with me:-) I also think that he looked better in series one.

  • Comment number 75.

#71. #74 Ditto, I preferred slender Mitchell, too!

  • Comment number 76.

Yeah in the "deadly furniture" scene you can really see that his arms are alot bigger... But I don't mind, People change all the time.. and he is still as wonderful as ever.... it's if he gets a belly on him that'll put me off, lol!

Someone earlier mentioned that Josie would recognize Herrick in season one and I hadn't thought of that! If it had really gone the way it did in season 2 then older Josie wouldn't have gone anywhere NEAR Herrick. But people make mistakes, I know from writing in the Nano Wrimo challenge I wrote one scene where the front door had been broken down and it wasn't until near the end of the month I realised in the next scene there was someone knocking on the door... in the same day.... how can they knock on a door that has just been broken down? pmsl! So it's easy to forget little details plus I think there are other writers involved, aren't there so it's always gonna be hard. I still think the 60s josie scenes are excellent and better than just meeting in a bar anyway so in my mind it was season 1 that got it wrong not season 2!! As for Mitchells clothes well my hubby is always in something different... one min he's wearing his black shirt and then the next min he's in something different but claims "it's not dirty" so puts it back in his wardrobe then the next min he's back in the black shirt... so it might just be a man thing!

  • Comment number 77.

I thought, too, that older Josie would have recognised Herrick (blimey, how could anyone forget him?) but I'm trying to ignore the younger Josie discrepancies, eg, and as someone else already asked, how did the police know, so soon, that murder had been committed?

If Bexter2001 thinks that the writing on S2 was rushed, what will not-that-far-away S3 be like? BH Prod: please don't just chuck everyone and everything at it!!

But, hey, it is only a TV prog and I'm becoming far too absorbed in Planet BH!

  • Comment number 78.

Questions have arisen about Molly being a vampire if so can't have been that long in ep 4 the Sam intro when George is getting interviewed you see a picture of Molly on the computer screen background. If she is a vampire you have to work out how long if digital or color photo.

Also the Mitchell entering the homes last week. Josie lived in the same building as the girls and you can't enter buildings without invite but once you do free range the pedophile could have lived in a flat sane rules?

this has been my logic gap filled for the day I think.

  • Comment number 79.

Afternoon bloggers! Not on for long...

Something odd about Molly...that long appraising look she gave George outside the school...like she knew something about him...and she does look a bit like Hattie...

Kinda getting used to the odd little discrepancies...still no idea why the Josie/Mitchell meeting storyline was changed though...

Music is still fab...keep noticing bits I've never clocked before...that's why I keep having to see episode 5, of course...no other reason...

BH PROD: Any chance of a few clips from future episodes to cheer us up this dismal day, please? We could do with something to ponder over and a bit more action from 6, 7 or 8 would do a treat....unless its going to be so good you're spoiled for choice for clips and have decided against it! xxx

  • Comment number 80.

summary of the last episode is up! I dont think I can bear the thought that it's the last episode!

dont read it if you dont want spoilers - I can never resist once I know it's there - but it must detract from the pleasure/tension of watching it unfold

  • Comment number 81.

still wondering when we get to see the chase that was in the original trailer?
maybe it's just before they head off for Wales?! but the dialogue doesnt seem part of the current story line (Mitchell telling Annie off about staying in the house watching TV?). His look of terror would also be new - we've seen worried plus dangerous/masterful and now distraught/desperate - but not terrified?

And we still havent seen Mitchell's fangs this series like in trailer - and only one glimpse of his black eyes.

  • Comment number 82.

    Celticgrace: Afternoon....

Am missing the Mitchell fangs for sure! This is why we need more clips....am thinking that he flashes 'em in the next 3 episodes though...

Is the programme trailer we had just a trailer designed for that, or actually something from the episodes we've not yet seen, do you think? Wasn't sure if it was just a trailer-type advert for S2...

  • Comment number 83.

Hi anglo - yes I was beginning to wonder if it was just a trailer - like the small flash ones - but the dialogue seemed so specific? but maybe Im reading too much into it - it was quite a typical exchange between the three of them and mentioned the house - so maybe we wont see that exact scene. But would still like to see not just Mitchell's fangs but George's sort-of fangs too?

    It's Friday - which means ....

  • Comment number 84.

Celticgrace (83) Yay.. Friday indeed! And a new blog post *smiles hopefully at BH Production Team*...with a clip or six from future episodes...missing fangs too but am very hopeful of fang action soon of both vampire and werewolf variety! :)

  • Comment number 85.

    Hi guys..yeh it's the weekend!!!!

Mitchell's fangs?..yes please!..think you're right Anglo...they'll make an appearance in eps 7 at least I'm sure as i think that epsisode will show a blood-curdling Mitchell!

Yes Molly is an odd child but then maybe she's just fed up of mum having boyfriends and just wants her dad back?..she is only 7 after all. Don't think she's Hattie.

It's Kemp who is facinating me at the mo and pondeing on all sort of scenarios for his past and the 'shocking experience' referred to by Lloydy boy...we'll find that out on Sunday.

Cor..you're brave celticgrace: I don't want to look as far ahead as the lsat episode ...a nice clip or two for tasty taster on eps 6 would be enough for me....!

  • Comment number 86.

not brave Dorina lol -- just ever so slightly obsessed!

  • Comment number 87.

no new blog no new clips I'm not feeling good.

  • Comment number 88.

cheer up ewan - do you think that the police inspector giving Mitchell the bad man's address could constitute the necessary invitation?
just trying to give you something to think about!

  • Comment number 89.

i think (78 thats my theory

  • Comment number 90.

still no clips/posts - do you think BHProd have been looking at a certain shot at end of ep5 and have gone to sleep?

  • Comment number 91.

Celticgrace: I think it's more likely they're totally drooled out if they've done ep5 as often as I have...sleep is the last thing on my mind once I've seen it..

  • Comment number 92.

but he looks so peaceful? does sleep-acting so well!

  • Comment number 93.

anglo - Ive done about 6 or 7 - are you beating that?

  • Comment number 94.

amateurs the lot of you obsessive is watching all 5 episodes every day till Monday when you start watching all 6

  • Comment number 95.

Celticgrace (93) Umm let's see...x3 times Sunday, x2 Monday, x1 Tuesday, x1 last night and x1 tonight later..so yep, 8 times in all and the weekend isn't yet over!

  • Comment number 96.

are you owning up to that ewan? and I was reluctant to admit to 6/7! I bow down!

  • Comment number 97.

OK anglo Im an amateur! maybe if I watched twice tonight? - not that Im bitter about a cancelled night out - not me! BH will be so much better fun ..(tho as you say it is hard to sleep after)

  • Comment number 98.

    maybe

  • Comment number 99.

I worry about some of you......!

  • Comment number 100.
