I guess they are trying to lure our favorite trying-to-be-good bad boy into hell. I find myself wondering if Herrick has something to do with it. Perhaps he has an in with the devil. Perhaps he wants retribution and getting Mitchell to hell is a good way to go. And what will happen with our moon-loving pups when Herrick shows up. I'm loving, if that's the right word, this vision of the Afterlife. To me it's an extension of everything encompassed by 'Being Human'. The people running Purgatory and the methods they use are very clearly human rather than those of a compassionate 'higher being', the vision we traditionally have and wish for.
The things we detest so much about our modern world - slavery to bureaucracy, depersonalisation and lack of freedom - are portrayed here as the constructs of Hell. Are these the aspects of humanity that continue in the next world or merely the place Annie is in? Very clever writing.

Annie is the loveliest, warmest, most kind, caring, *good* one in the bunch. Hell is not the place for her; but they've proper sussed out how to make her hell hellish through isolating her from all human comfort and love.
PS Tom: if they've stuck her at the top of the upper tier at Twickenham, she could be there a while. I almost passed out trying to get to seats there! Certainly had to stop for a ten minute rest on the stairs... if Mitchell has to do that he could get attacked by his train friends!! I wouldn't go there even to save Annie. The idea of purgatory means(in my cynical world) "A non-scriptural, medieval device to extract money from your parishioners by scaring the pants off them" It was a place to punish people for the sins they committed while they were alive. But Annie's verdict seems to be more of a punishment for the things she did after her death. Verily I say unto you, brothers and sisters, Lord Toby hath indeed a very strange view of religion.

I'm an Anglican Reader so I had to undergo three years of theological training. You'd be amazed at the odd things you learn - and also amazed that the things some Christian denominations think and get up to which aren't actually biblical. Purgatory was a fiddle by the church which put people in an "intermediate state" between life and heaven. Basically, it was a way of extracting money to "buy" a number of years off the punishment for your sin, either by the person themselves before they die or, by the person's family after death by paying a priest to perform a number of masses for the dead. Many Jews also believe that some form of "after death purification" is possible and the Christian church borrowed the concept and expanded it.
You could also earn time out from Purgatory by going on that well-known medieval money-spinner of going on pilgrimage. Visiting the relics of the Castle Church in Wittenburg, on whose doors Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses (thus provoking the Reformation) were said to earn a remission of 1,902,202 years and 270 days! Yep - somebody actually worked that out!!!!

It's not about the good and bad things she did in her life. It's all about keeping their hold on the process, and Annie has been a threat to that from the beginning. Even before these broadcasts, I've been thinking more and more that something is rotten in the state of Purgatory/Limbo/whatever you want to call the region on the immediate other side of the door.
The inmates have taken over the asylum, and Whoever/Whatever is in charge of what lies beyond that sliver of the eternal realm either hasn't noticed or hasn't been able to fix it. Maybe it's up to those who are oppressed there to rise up and do something about it...

Now when Annie grabbed Kemp the phrase 'They don't have forms for that' was used. Now there's the fear. we saw how they worked in season 2 trying to get Annie through the visual and secondary spirits but they had no corporal - relativity speaking - strength them selves but Annie was able to pass through the door physically yank Kemp to hell.
Now a too a bunch of bureaucratic self promoted order loving types. A Ghost that could do things they can't could either be a threat or an ally. However Annie has proven to be a free thinker and filled with empathy for her friends so. Threat, the delay was them trying to think of a way to contain her that's what took them time to reach a decision that and Mitchell breaking down the doors.
Hopefully this will help others realise they fear her. Maybe Annie will realise that too but will she in time?
Hopefully soon we shall find out, maybe we'll find out when before Christmas.

I can see that this probably has to happen if the story is going in the direction of Mitchell saving her, and getting her back from the other side. But I really think we should get a good explanation in the first episode of season 3, for why Annie is send to hell!
Even if this is the best way to get the story moving forward, it doesn't give us the answer to why Annie is going to hell. For me it has to be more than an act of revenge/fear on the part of the men with sticks and ropes. She still has a pure heart, why has that been overlooked? And she grabbed Kemp to save the others. It wasn't an evil act. That has to count for something. Hmmm.... I guess I'm still mad at Toby Whithouse for this!

So, I've gathered how they get into Hell/Death (sort of)...but how do they get out again?
I haven't even seen BH3 yet, and I'm already hoping for BH4. Lol. But, OMG, please don't kill off any of the mains just because Aidan Turner is off to film The Hobbit. It really wouldn't be the same. I can stand addition (Nina is arresting to watch), but not subtraction. I would weep for days! I just want them all to be together! That's why Annie needs to be rescued, obviously.
