Sgt Swift has worked at Brinford station for a few years, sharing shifts with Pratt who has now retired.

Never married, he lived with his rather demanding and ailing mother until she passed away a few years ago. As a result he has become a little too set in his ways.

Very self-sufficient for a man in the 50s, he learned to cook, clean and iron his own shirts in the army. His home is basic but immaculately kept.

John would like to meet the right woman; he is kind, generous and respectful, but painfully shy around them. When the lovely Miss Nightingale arrives, John will find himself in quite a pickle鈥�
