This is REALLY bad news. I will miss IB like anything.

So will I. To my mind it is particularly sad as, for all its problems, IB has promoted not only communication about the Islands but also between people within the disparate archipelagos and the wider world. It did, to quote , allow nation to speak peace unto nation. Surely it would not be so expensive to upgrade the blogging engine. Anyone know how to set up an an online petition?

Presume R Brand and J Ross cost the Ö÷²¥´óÐã lots and you have your priorities. For me it was a pity that people were not allowed to post and host video using the Ö÷²¥´óÐã codex. Restricting people to text and pictures was ok but things have moved on. There was a possibility to be ahead of the game. Sad.

Can you not set up a Ö÷²¥´óÐã message board for this? Strictly Come Prancing will be finshed soon and their message board will ease off for a while - plenty room for IB to sneak in and take over. Please do not leave us out in the cold scarey world of 'real blogging'. We like it cosy by the hearth with a song and a wee dram. Pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaasee. Sniff, sniff.

This is all a bit depressing! The unique thing about IB is that the blogs are connected by the theme of "Scottish Islands". So as well as a set of blogs, it is also a common interest group, like you might find in Usenet or web based fora. (Pretentious, moi, mais non....) I can flit from isle to isle like some sort of cyber pub crawler, and flit easily. If I have to hunt down blogs relating to specific islands, it is going to be a hassle - here it is just a one or two click process. Nah.... bad idea. Keep IB. Besides, the heavy moderation (NOT censorship!!) means that I can direct a friend or relative here at any time, secure in the knowledge that they are not going to stumble upon anything unsavoury or nasty. Lord Reith would have approved. Oh well, it was fun... Soraidh slan, a bhlogairean.... bi mi gar n-ionndrainn! I feel a cyber-wake coming on.....

Apart from occasionally reading Moo's coffeecatholic blog, and, well, to be honest I'd rather not join that....(Not being catholic or liking coffee you understand..)

A mass migration would be nice. It would be really good if we could stick together. As a non-blogger I have no experience here, but it would be so nice to have one-click access to everyone, as MM so rightly says. I found the IB blogging engine irritating when comments went astray, but otherwise had no problem with the moderation aspect. Keep on blogging! Viva IB!

I imagine the clunking corporate fist has descended never to rise but here are a few arguments which should be put before Their Riethships. IB is in the spirit of the Ö÷²¥´óÐã charter. It is informative. We have all found out things about ourselves and our respective communities which we would not have done without it. It is educational. There have been wonderful blogs on the landscape and geology of Scotland and we have enjoyed debate on the languages of our own country and others. It belongs to the community. We pay our share of the funding and as a proportion get somewhat less attention than the Mainland. More to the point it is a community in its own right we can all feel that we"know" the bloggers and the regular commentors and we are welcoming. It provides a service, unpopular word in today's climate, I know, but service along with duty and responsibility are values we need these days. It is International. Commentors from :- USA, Australia,New Zealand,India, Norway,Sweden and The Netherlands to my recent memory. Most of all it is accessible. The web has so many advantages over the radio spectrum as a platform for broadcasting. Try getting the World Service on short wave in some parts of the globe. In short keep it it is what the Ö÷²¥´óÐã was made for.

We liked Island logging - text & pics is all we want. Other web based blog sites are blocked by the school filtering system so we can't post blogs or comments. Our blog will disappear when island blogging finishes.

It does, just at the moment, feel rather like being DUMPED!!! Still, with the amount we pay in Licence Fee, at the very least, I want my ring back... Good thinking DoaD. Ruth, Moo blogs on Blogger which contains many 'interest groups' (including the religious fundamentalists and virtual fascists): so, while there may be a home there, its not a great engine and its HUGE!!

Please count me in on the migration, i.e. keep me up to date on any new link. I strongly agree with the idea that IB is an ISLAND community and I think it should stay that way, diluting it with Swedish, Dutch, Estonian, Ethiopian and Venezualan comments would simply make it the same as 1 zillion other commnities. Keep IB for the Islanders and let us others have our say in the Comments. Why can't the BEEB upgrade the blogengine???? Hyperborean is, as (almost) always, a master of the balanced view. Perhaps this is revenge for all the deprecating comments about the SF. Death, where is thy sting?

What can I say, I have met some really good friends on IB, even before we settled here, I cannot believe the Ö÷²¥´óÐã are pulling the plug on us. What about the people who cant leave thier home who rely on this sort of communication??? Maybe we should all meet once aweek at a local Hotel for coffee evening. Anyway I must say THANK YOU for everyone who got involved with IB with your comments.......you will be sadly missed, If anyone has an idea where we can blog please let me know so we can pick up where we left off!

This is the end. Island Blogging will soon be no more, for reasons which seem rather difficult to comprehend. A lack of cash? Surely not? From the wage packets handed out to actors and celebrities it must cost millions to upgrade the software. But alas, the reasons are not for me to ponder. I think Island Blogging was a stunning idea. Everyone who lives in these truly unique places suddenly had their own voice which could not be shouted over by those in the mainland. The voices of people who never notice when they order something from a catalogue or the internet that delivery is free for UK mainland only. People who have to lock their doors at night. People who have no idea who their neighbours are. People who cannot comprehend that if the weather is bad, you are stuck. People who think a community is something which lives in a community centre and who’s children think that milk and meat comes from the supermarket, eggs have nothing to do with a chicken and mud is a bad thing. I’m working on a new home for us. I am a bear of very little brain, so progress might be slow.

Sorry Carol but nothing you have said persuades me from my earlier arguments. Sadly I can only conclude that IB was a good idea which the corporation thought could be done part time at no, or little cost. Now that it has grown it is an embarrassment, financially, because it requires more support than it receives. This is not to criticise the support which IBHQ has provided but it is to criticise Ö÷²¥´óÐã management who seem not to recognise a success when they spawn one. To all IBers I wish good luck and thanks for your company. Hopefully we have a few more months here and we will find another platform. Avanti populo!

Well I tride your first choice blodg engine and it left me (Up the creek(borne) in a babwire canoe without a paddle) IB has always been a one stop clikon to the communities of the isles. The good days and the not so good and as my self and other off islanders we do appreciate being able to drop a comment in from time to time.This is not just scotland islands its has world wide viewing and there is always the hope of a change in the mentality of those who considerd this channel was not important.

Looked at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Local website for North-East Scotland, Orkney & Shetland and can't see where we can make contributions - apart from pics. Any contributions, though, will be swallowed up and not be noticed. Also it's back to the bad old days when the Northern Isles were in their own wee box, the Western Isles were in theirs and so on.... Surely Jonathan Woss can give us some of his millions......Oh, I forgot he's not being paid at the moment. He'll only get £4 million from the Ö÷²¥´óÐã this year.

I agree with pretty much all o the above. It comes doon to money really. And the reluctance o the Beeb to spend any on this thing we call island blogging. (credits to tws there) IB is one o the most successful things they have done for the isles. It may not carry the numbers of users that some projects can achieve, but then, it is directed at a rural area. Which, by definition, has less of a population than the toons. As Muness was saying to me yesterday, what are the rural areas getting for their licence money these days? Most of us don't even have access to a digital signal yet. Carol fae here, who can I send my complaints to? Is it just the usual IBHQ address, or can I send my views any further up the ranks?

That is the second blogging platform that is pulled from under my feet within 2 months. Right. I am blogging elsewhere (have done for 4 years), but would like to keep in touch with the community beyond the closure of Island Blogging next year. Cue Carol!

This may anticipate a contribution that I sent directly to Carol at IBHQ. Listen everyone, IB is not going to die becasue we are not going to let it. As HB writes, this is a real success story, and the reson it is a success is becasue it uniquely fills a unique need. NOw if Aunty BEEB is stupid enough to drop IB, there are surely a lot of commerical operations who would be glad to pick it up (because we can't do it on love alone and expect to succeed in the long run). Now Carol has reassured me and all of us that IB will not lie down and die before the end of the year, so this gives us a bit of time. My proposal would be to a) find a sponsor and b) find a moderator and c) apply existing IB rules with maybe just a few wee changes to d) an up-to-date blogmotor. All this can be done providing we don't start loosing focus and splitting hairs. One thing we might have to sacrifice is the archive going back to the year dot, because with all the pictures that must guzzle hard drive space - and honestly, how often do you go back to a 2 year old blog? I am in contact with my web hotel supplier in Sweden to find out how realistic all this might be, costs, blogmachines. etc. That isn't to say that IB should migrate to Sweden if a bettter solution can be found elsewhere. As I understand it the physical location of the server(s) isn't so important, what is neccessary is a good moderator who knows what she/he is doing. COmments, please!

I would be happy to go along with any solution that would let us carry on pretty well as we are, because it works. IB is a community, it is blog success personified in my view. The point that Fetlar School made about videos etc is a good one - I think text and photies is good enough, isn't it? I am working on the following model and I would appreciate any comments that you make: a. Scotland I B will follow current IB format and rules, except: b. Modern blog motor permitting videos c. Maximum archive time 3 months (to save storage space and therefore costs) d. Sponsorship permitted (because its going to cost money whatever whichway you turn) e. One-time code control of contributions(instead of Spam Fritter f. It can’t be done without a Moderator (if we can find one) Re. sponsors, is there a slush fund in the Scottish Parliament that could be tapped? What about the Scottish TOurist Board (or whatever it is called these days)? OR a whisky company?? MOre suggestions, please!

Ruthodanort is right about what she says re value for licence fee. IB is surely a tiny part of that. Look at all the Terry Wogans, Jonathan Ross's etc who take vast chunks of that. The powers that be are at the top are more interested in the high-profile things, not those of us on the periphery. HD TV? - nope can't get it here; Digital TV? - nope, not available so I can't watch Ö÷²¥´óÐã3 or Ö÷²¥´óÐã4; digital radio? Can just barely pick up FM; live TV streamed over the internet? Internet connection can't cope, picture pixellates or constantly buffering. Of course, south folk - and I include Scotland's Central Belt - often think that the isles are unimportant. Are they? Let them ponder that question as they put oil in their car, sip their Islay malt whisky, dine on Shetland salmon or Orkney lobster, wrap up warm in their Fair Isle jumper of Harris tweed jacket. IB was a small op but a HUGE success!! Far more active than most other blogs. A whole community despite never seeing or knowing who most participants are.

I'm very satisfied to not that DoaD is also trying to find a practical solution for a new IB home. Obviously this raises the question of coordinating activities. Also all IB:ers should think hard as to how the site could be improved ... it's no good coming with a wants list after a new site has been set up. I would suggest that we ask Carol to start a new blog on IBHQ in which these questions can be discussed - it is quite apparent by this time that enough IB:ers want a new IB. Soaplady, your offer is gratefully noted but first I think we need to understand better what the duties of the moderator currentlyare and to what extent they could be made less onorous by the use of one-time codes coupled to automatic postings. Last thought - should a reference group of 3 IB:ers (the real thing, not commentators) be formed, who would discuss the merits of alternative solutions? Always that interesting balance between effective (in the short term) dictatorship and committee sluggishness....

Right! We have a solution. A friend of mine who runs a very large scuba diving forum is helping me set up a domain name where we can all run blogs in software called wordpress. We are just sorting out the name of the community - hope island-blogging . co . uk isnt taken! It might be a bit shakey to start with, but please be patiend. I am a bear of very little brain when it comes to the internet.

OMG. I've just got back online after a fair time away and I find THIS out!!! I did wonder as I noticed the Island Blogging shortcut was missing from the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Scotland homepage but thought it was a temporary thing to accommodate swishy hair Neil Olivers stuff on Scotlands History. I will miss FC, Stromness Dragon,Moo,Barney, DOAD et al very much. Living and working in the hustly(?sp) bustly city I liked nothing better than to logon and immerse myself in your Island lives. It was a wonderful insight into ither peoples lives. I will endeavour to search other blogging engines for all your blogs . I will miss all the pithy comments from mjc and Jill from EK. Ihope you all enjoy the upcoming festivities where ever you are, I'm sure cyber space celebrates too!

You never know even if he cannot bring pressure to bare to keep the site open he may be able to offer advice on other avenues including funding for a new site. Island blogging is such a unique blogging site, bringing all aspects of island life together, not only to each other but the greater world. It's moderated, which sometimes can be a little frustrating, but at the end of the day, there's no bad language, no nastiness and, okay occassionally we have a bit of Carry On Style cheeky banter, but nothing too racey. Island Blogging has also demonstrated the diverse range of talented people with contributions from exceptional poets, writers and photographers whose love for their beautiful island has shone through. Even school children have made contributions and we have seen the beautiful work of Island Threads,we have seen Fred rebuild his home, we have seen Eagles and mountains on the stunning island of Mull, been enthralled by Hermit Life's story telling and heard all about the wonderous birth of a new baby girl. Island bloggers have supported each other, pulled each other's leg with wit and good humour. The amount of comments posted here simply shows just how much Island Blogging is loved and just how much it will be missed. I will miss you all. xxxx

Even though I don't blog here much I do read lots of blogs every week. I find belonging to the wider community very important on days I feel isolated and alone. Sometimes it's just me and IB against the elements! I appreciate all the suggestions from other bloggers and especially those in Shetland. I have contacted a friend who has political aspirations and I know she will make my feelings and all others known to her MSP colleagues so they will challenge Ö÷²¥´óÐã thinking. I will also submit a written complaint as so many of you have. I will so miss everyones blogs and comments - Thank you from my heart, mind, soul and spirit.

Well ... I could hardly believe what I was reading!! OK, IB has reached the end of its natural life, but that doesn't mean it cannot be ressurrected and transported to another site. There must be a viable alternative out there in cyber space! Musn't there? I visit this site regularly, comment occasionally, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading of your lives in the far north. I do hope that when a new site is opened [and there will be one of that I am confident], a announcement will be made of the web address ... so we can all get together in another space. A site as good as this is special in a special way ... it has to continue! Good luck to those attempting to find another place for the rest of us, whether we be bloggers, or commenters. Thanks to all those who have made this site such a wonderful interesting entertaining and informative place ... a second home.

Not having the the technical know how to make a practical contribution to the setting up process but being retired I could offer to become a part time moderator, it does seem to work on other sites I visit. Keep up the good work.

It seems a little odd, with Scotland heavily promoting "Scotland Ö÷²¥´óÐãcoming, 2009" that Ö÷²¥´óÐã would choose to shut down IB at the beginning of the year. One would think that they would have waited until at least 31 December 2009 to shut it down.

Re comments from CVBruce about Ö÷²¥´óÐãcoming 2009. I think the timing is auspicious now to switch. As intimated elsewhere IB had its limitations and foibles, the new site is a big improvement in lots of different ways. Much better to make the switch before Ö÷²¥´óÐãcoming really gets off the ground at the end of January. My only regret is that the new site isn't branded to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã but I guess that's a minor point in the scheme of things.
