New to BH? Watch out, this post contains spoilers from series one...

Ìý

For the last time Colin Teague, the fantastic director of Being Human episodes 5 & 6, talks us through the music that brought the series to an end...

Ìý

Ìý

Episode 6 the final showdown.... Once again our composer Richard Wells must be given huge credit for producing aÌýtrulyÌýmesmeric score. Ìý

Ìý

So to start... Duffy's MercyÌý- I wanted to use a cafe which gave us a late night sixties milk-bar feel and the Duffy track compliments the visuals of this mood perfectly. ÌýNow, I know a couple of you clued up bloggers have pointed out the track is under two years old thus how could it be playing in a sequence set two years previously... well, good point... but, I reckon it was probably a local late night radio station playing on the radio in the cafe who were promoting talent/new bands to watch out for, and as everybody knows, most of the music aired today has been about for at least eighteen months, two years... well, that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.Ìý

Ìý

The following piece outside in the alleyway is a piece we also reprise later during the goodbye sequence in the house. ÌýIt's kinda haunting and timeless and was inspired by a track from a cult film... (10 points if anyone can guess the title) it draws us into the characters and there emotions beautifully, then to cut hard into the hospital with the raw 'Where is Ö÷²¥´óÐã' by Bloc Party, as Mitchell is rushed through the corridors of the hospital into emergency and with it back to present day makes for a strong complimentary opening of visuals, dialogue and score. Ìý

Ìý

The Elvis Costello track 'Baby Plays Around'Ìýis all down to our illustrious writer Toby Whithouse. ÌýHe wrote the death of Josie scene with the track in mind and I had it in my head when we shot the sequence. ÌýI'm a big fan of Costello so am very happy with both the music and end result x Ìý

Ìý

Johnny Cash - 'The Man Comes Around'Ìýcredit is due to our ace Producer Matt Bouch for this track, he came into the edit after having watched a rough cut and suggested we try Johnny Cash over the Herrick / Mitchell sequence just to give it a left field approach and it worked a treat.Ìý

Ìý

There are obviously loads of score moments i could mention individually but instead I will offer up a sequence of scenes and music, from Mitchell meeting Herrick outside the police station through to him talking to George and Annie back at the house, George visiting the priest, the argument at the house and ending with George visiting Herrick at the funeral parlour with another round of Michael Crawford thrown in for good measure just for Nana... ÌýA very understated score but beautifullyÌýexecutedÌýx x x looking forward to series two.... smiles ct

Yay thanks for this and thank you so much for explaining the duffy song weve been trying to explain it for you but your excuse was much better than any we came up with :-)

Loved the music from this episode the song over the josie death scene was lovely and that scene makes me cry every time :-( (yeah im a wimp lol) and loved the johnny cash track ... well yeah its all good think this is maybe my favourite episode for the music - or maybe tied with good old gilbert fun :-)

Thank you very much Mr Teague :-D

  • Comment number 2.

I LOVED the orignal music. Well done again, Mr Wells. I especially noticed it when Mitchell was on the roof waiting for Herrick.

    Good choices again.

Thanks fot taking the time to explain again.

  • Comment number 3.

The Josie scene makes me cry too. And I liked the use of the Johnny Cash track too

  • Comment number 4.

There's another cool job (see the pic) hee hee

  • Comment number 5.

Yeah but if you look at the date - 9th of december 2008 they were filming - it took over a year to get to our screens - that doesnt bode well for series 2 considering tobys not finished writing it yet :-) looks like were gonna have to be extremely patient...

  • Comment number 6.

They would aim for same time next year depending on schedules of other tv, the actors prior commitments, funding... loads of stuff to consider.
I'm going to download blocparty, 'that' to me was the best part of epi 6.

  • Comment number 7.

Yeah well most of them are doing other things as well as this and i think id rather wait and have a great show than them rush it lol.

I have nothing better to do on my day off so i was looking on imbd at what other stuff the actors had been in - i knew i recognized jason from somewhere and couldnt work out where and god hes been in loads - im gonna have to re watch everything and look out for him :-)

And also somehting i realised - nearly all of them have been in either doctors or eastenders lol

  • Comment number 8.

Jason is in Confetti as a very camp gay wedding planner and he is fab in that too

  • Comment number 9.

Doctors...dear god that is one of the worst shows ever.

  • Comment number 10.

No, no, no, no, no. It is 'THE' worst show ever.

  • Comment number 11.

Oh for goodness sake. Even on the Wiki page for Being Human some smart alec has written about the 'Duffy' thing as a continuity error. Grrrr. Winds me up when people pick stupid holes just to seem clever.

  • Comment number 12.

hahahah superOchre, yes, I do believe Doctors is THE worst show ever :-) I can't for the life of me understand why it has been running for so long

  • Comment number 13.

I think this is why I've become a BH addict. Officially my free time is between 10am-2pm, all the rest is work or I'm skiiving (now). So you can imagine the sort of normal tv I'm exposed to.
But even Lost, Heroes and conchords have lost their shine next to BH. Totally have to catch up on those though.

  • Comment number 14.

Being Human has satisfied my British supernatural craving; it's just fab. I liked Hex, but that only ran on Sky One and was cancelled. I watched about 2 seconds of Demons and felt actually ambarrassed on behalf of the actors and writers. I loved Dr Who (pre 26 yr old new Dr) but that was more sci-fi.

Anyhoo, I feel like I've highjacked the poor music crew's blog spot with off-subject ramblings, so I'll shut up! :-)

  • Comment number 15.

Yeah i read he was in confetti - i have that its got robert webb in hes signed it for me lol gonna have to re watch and bridget jones 2 aswell....

he'll still always be herrick to me now thought lol im gonna miss him :-(

  • Comment number 16.

Yeah I watched Bridg the other day, just to see a brief glimpe of Mr Whithouse haha. Well, that and it's one of my faves. I didn't love Confetti but I thought it was incredibly observant and captured each type of person in it perfectly. Good cast too. Love Jason, even as a camp wedding planner.

  • Comment number 17.

was that a typo or is toby in it?? lol

  • Comment number 18.

No he's in it. He plays Alistair (one of the 'smug married couples' people)

  • Comment number 19.

Haha brilliant! The comment about the Duffy song is the same explanation I gave because it could technically be true ;)

  • Comment number 20.

Oh my god yeah lol ha just looked he was on house of eliot too - my mum loves that program.

Oh my god what a multi talented young man we have in our midst!!

Wow i have to admit im very impressed!

  • Comment number 21.

OK had to whack bridget jones on to see and oh my god i never would have recognized him!!

  • Comment number 22.

I know, I used to love House of Elliot when I was younger. They did re-runs recently but I missed them and was gutted.

And I wouldn't have recognised him either. He looks way more dishy on here than in that.

  • Comment number 23.

Yeah he does :-S lol mr whithouse i have a whole new respect for you :-) (have you read his wikipedia/imdb page? my god the blokes been about a bit :-D)

Next step - bridget jones 2 to look out for jason...

  • Comment number 24.

House of elliot is on funny telly all the time - virgin or something posh like that lol i only have freeview though :-(

  • Comment number 25.

I've only got freeview too, and can only get 6 channels because of the signal (thank God Ö÷²¥´óÐã3 is one of them!!!)

I did have a quick look on his wiki page (so worried I'll sound stalker-like) and yeah he's been in a lot of stuff. I keep asking if he'll cameo on BH - I hope so!

I want Mr Whithouse and Jason appreciation groups on FB!

  • Comment number 26.

Actually FB demonstrates I'm not a stalker

  • Comment number 27.

God i just did the same thing as when i saw toby...oh my god no way?! lol jason as a snotty lawyer talk about versatile - he looks so different looks so much older than as herrick and he looks balder - hows that possible it was filmed first lol well im officially confused :-S

    Again - wow.

  • Comment number 28.

Feeling guilty for highjacking the blog of the lovely music people again

  • Comment number 29.

lol were not stalkers - just interested im really interested in getting into tv and it amazes me how much his done (not that i want to be famous - im a behind the scenes kinda girl :-)) but you cant help have serious respect for him hes done so much and all good stuff as well. god im so eliquent tonight :-S not - apologies.

  • Comment number 30.

Anyway, I need to try and wean myself off BH until the DVD release, so am off to watch some Yes Minister instead

  • Comment number 31.

Yes sorry music people :-S the music is great too though (See above long rambling post lol)

  • Comment number 32.

Lol i had black books box set ready to go but ive got into bridget jones 2 now :-) only ever seen a couple of episodes of yes minister (apalling really considering im supposed to be a connoisseur of all things comedy! :-D)

  • Comment number 33.

Yes, I'd love to be a behind the scenes girl (would hate to be famous), for tv, theatre or gigs. I just think it would be so satisfying to be part of creating high calibre stuff. Trouble is I haven't taken that path in life at all and it's way too competitive.

  • Comment number 34.

Ooh Black Books, i have that box set too. God, these poor music people, eagle_eyes4! We're nutters! ;-)

  • Comment number 35.

and re: Yes Minister, you MUST watch it. It's as relevant today as it ever was back then. I can't help but chuckle at all news stories about the Government because I just relate it to Yes Minister

  • Comment number 36.

Yes thats my thinking at the minute too :-S not sure how to get into it at all but I think Im going to have to go for it otherwise its one of those things you'll regret and be thinking in a couple of decades well what if? I dont like what ifs - try everything once thats my philosophy - whats the worst that can happen :-)

  • Comment number 37.

I bought the complete Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister boxset and started there!

  • Comment number 38.

Lol practically my entire dvd collection is comedy - sitcoms and stand up (currently saving to go and see someone else live - went to french and saunders and they were amazing ive never laughed so much in my life but cost us about a hundred quid :-S)
The new statesmans the same though lol completely mad but rik mayall - another comic genius i was introduced to the young ones doing media did a whole year on sitcom been a fan ever since - shockingly he never really crossed my radar until then :-S

  • Comment number 39.

lol meant into tv not into yes minister *rolls eyes* lol cant afford it at minute but its going on the list :-) just bought ghost town ricky gervais's film and got being human on pre order - ought to save a little bit of money for rent and bills and possibly food - although that comes as a last lol who needs to eat when you can laugh eh :-D

  • Comment number 40.

Oh whoops hee hee. Food always used to come last when I was a student. I lived on stock cubes for 2 weeks once coz that's all I had left in the cupboard!

  • Comment number 41.

lol ugh no its not got that bad im told im a rubbish student - i dont eat enough beans apparently lol but then im not technically a student - well im at college but i have 2 jobs too and am at work more than im at college - im a busy bee lol and the fact ive spent the last 6 weeks living on here has made me even more busy - its a good job i dont really sleep lol i dont think id have the time...

  • Comment number 42.

ok bye bye bridget...dylan moran time lol good old black books and another irish accent :-)

  • Comment number 43.

    "whats your mothers maiden name?"
"hell whats her first name i just knew her as ma! Ah thatll have to do" lol couldnt resist - im trying to wean myself off being human :-( gonna have to get used to watching something else for the next 6 weeks until the dvd :-(

  • Comment number 44.

Omg eagle_eyes4 I reckon we were seperated at birth or something! that is one of my favourite Black Books scenes :-) I feel like that at the moment doing essays; the stuff I have to read for them is mind boggling sometimes .. '..if you live by a river but are not blind...' haha

  • Comment number 45.

lol its one of my favourites too :-) "where have you been? i smell chips! is that lipstick on your beard? ive been working here all night and youve been out scoffing chips with some tart...where are my chips wheres my tart? i want chips and tarts manny!" also never realised david walliams was in it...just spotted him "im probably getting a lot of secondary smoke from you?!" "never mind you can buy me a drink sometimes well call it even"

oops not being human related but i cant watch that :-( its all gone...what am i gonna do with my time lol ooh on a side note sperkii i may have managed my tv related job :-) need your facebook or something stop taking over the poor music peoples comment page :-S
    Sorry!

  • Comment number 46.

Not the most observant person are you? ;-)

TV related job? Get you! re: FB I have created the two groups I've been banging on about and am still the only member

  • Comment number 47.

I havent seen series 1 for ages - he probably wasnt quite as famous when i last saw it so wouldnt have paid him much attention he only has that one line lol

  • Comment number 48.

    which facebook pages are they?

  • Comment number 49.

One for Jason, one for Mr Whithouse. I am not a very committed admin though, am looking to recruit

  • Comment number 50.

You have to type Being Human after their names though, otherwise they don't come up. Have proved I'm a non-stalker by ignoring a particular result which came up!!

  • Comment number 51.

Getting back to the actual music...am just watching episode 6 again and am noticing the music even more than the first few times I watced it. Still love the original stuff every time. Thought the Elvis Costello track made the Josie scene even more tear-jerking. Appreciated the Bloc party track more this time too.

  • Comment number 52.

thanks so much for letting us know the music througout the series it really does have a beautifull soundtrack.

I also like your well thought Duffy theory :D

  • Comment number 53.

Really truly fantastic soundtracking, completing the all-round brilliance of every aspect of the production!

Can i put in an early request for some Bob Dylan next series? Just sneak somethin in there like rolling stone or knockin on heaven's door (you kinda missed the boat on that one though!)

    or times they are a-changin.

I just saw watchmen and altho most of it was a let-down i thought the opening montage set to that song was amazing.

And i think it'd be a great song for the show:

    Don't stand in the doorway
    Don't block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
    There's a battle outside
    And it is ragin'.
    It'll soon shake your windows
    And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

It kinda builds tension with its ominous lyrics while at the same time it's a really cheery-sounding song!

And the idea of outside as a threat to the safety of the home is SO appropriate to the show!!

And it's the perfect kind of unique and special song that suits your soundtracks!

    Pleeeeeeease!?

I dunno why i care so much, I just really like the idea of that song being on the show.

    But any dylan will do!

    Thanks!

  • Comment number 54.

oh also pet shop boys - it's a sin!!

That one's kinda cheesy i know so maybe only suitable if it was actually in a club//party setting but heck maybe the right scene would arise calling for that kind of tone.. and i think in the right circumstances that song would have a big impact!

Lol i don't expect my suggestions to be seriously considered... i just like thinking about all this and showing my enthusiasm!

  • Comment number 55.

will they be bringing out a cd of all this lovely music?

  • Comment number 56.

With regards to the 'Duffy' track I'd just like to point out that the promo for the single was actually released in 2007, and so it would most probably have been sent to most radio stations for playing in 2007. The fact that it didn't get a general release in the UK until 25th Feb 2008, doesn't detract from the fact that DJ's could have had the single up to 6 months before that date. ;o)

  • Comment number 57.

god i LOVED the cash song before the fight.

it built tension and anticipation but in a reall quirky way that put you in a good mood even thought you knew mitchell was probably heading towards doom!

because it was just perfectly capturing the situation and building the pace up to the finale's crescendo.

and the sense of inevitability and fate and justice and 'that's the way it is' to the song really was appropriate to mitchell's mindset- facing the music, cos that's the way it's got to be, things wont change..

awesome awesome awesome song. EXCELLENT mini-montage.

it was perfect tv - cos it made a really tense and sad moment.. beautiful.. and bittersweet.

    yum!

  • Comment number 58.

@esthervincini i sincerely hope they bring out a soundtrack!

i've already bought all the tracks i didn't have online (except for arctic monkeys... that song is dead to me.. heard it about a million times too many)

but i would totally buy the cd if they made one!

  • Comment number 59.

    song for Annie :)

    : Suzanne Leonard Cohen

    :

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that shes half crazy
But thats why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from china
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That youve always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For youve touched her perfect body with your mind.

  • Comment number 60.

Bit of an afterthought, and I doubt anyone reads this far back, but "Future Foe Scenarios" by Silversun Pickups seems an almost obvious song for series two.

  • Comment number 61.

Twilight Galaxy describes so much about what actually being human is. Its awesome and Id love to see it in a future series :) Xx. The music is being human is done so well it compliments the awesomeness that is Being Human!

  • Comment number 62.

What was the name of the song when Josie gets into the hospital bed with Mitchell. Was it an original done for the show or a rack not listed.

I have become a big fan of the show here in the states, More so, it is rare when an traditionally instrumental track moves me. I would love to know who it is. Also, if it would be on a soundtrack album for the show?

    Thanks

  • Comment number 63.

So far the music choices for Series 1 have been fantastic!
Just wondering - would any of the track from the new Muse album (The Resistance) be useable for the second series? I was thinking of the chorus to Uprising, or the first few lines of Resistance...

  • Comment number 64.

Sorry, meant to put the lyrics in - these are the first few lines from "Resistance" by Muse...

"Is our secret safe tonight and are we out of sight
Will our world come tumbling down
Will they find our hiding place
    Is this our last embrace
Ohh will the world stop caving in..."

  • Comment number 65.

it's REALY starting to get on my nerves now can someone please tell me what the name of the song is on the advert that say "They see me in the dark" thank you
