Haha, I wonder if I am partly responsible for the 'tone' discussion. Maybe Im oversensitive but did the clip of George shouting 'it's not about you!' seemed aimed at the show's critics? Lol, it felt like it!

Im not all that surprised that a change in tone wasn't intentional. Just a byproduct of new, ambitious storylines. Although you obviously were aware that things would be 'darker' because Toby was warning us about that months beforehand!

Look, it's not terrible, everything just seems a bit 'clunky' compared to last series. But I'm ok with it now, honest. Except for the Vampire rehab. Mitchell tied to a chair = cool. AA meetings = naff.

I'm afraid that Phil has completely missed the point. It isn't the humour that's been lacking, it's the sense of warmth and love between our three main characters.

I have enough of people who can't stand each other in my real life. What had attracted me in the first season was the deep and real friendship between George, Annie, and Mitchell. They were more like family than flatmates. In this season, especially in the first few episodes, that was totally missing.

When George tells Mitchell that he's at loose ends because he has no family, no girlfriend, no career, it made me wonder why that should suddenly be cause for unhappiness. The same was true in series one, but the characters, Mitchell included, found companionship in each other. This series, it's like they've all turned outwards.

Phil says, "those stories have to be true to the characters," but they HAVEN'T been. No matter how much stress he was under, the Mitchell of series one would never, NEVER have reacted so callously to the news that Saul assaulted Annie. And George? The entire plot of episode two revolved around him realizing that he may be a monster, but he is not a prat like Tully, and him coming to value his true friends. Suddenly all of that character development is thrown out the window, just because he killed a man? And the entire conflict around Nina moving in but refusing to have sex with him felt so contrived. She had a perfectly nice flat of her own; why on earth would she abandon it to be miserable in a room with George?

And the entire production is darker. There are more scenes shot at night, fewer scenes in sunlight. The house does not seem as bright and cheery, as ordinary as it once did. I liked that the normally, everyday world used to be the backdrop for all these dramatic effects. We used to have vampires lounging in cafes, writing their names in salt, now they live on the street and congregate in dark churches? Mitchell used to wear colourful shirts; now, we never see him in anything bright. I could go on, but these were all deliberate decisions that darken the show unnecessarily and cause it to lose a lot of its charm.

sorry mbn I dont agree - relationships go through all sorts of phases - esp living in a flatshare! and one insensitive few minutes hardly amounts to a whole character shift? and an imminent bloodbath and mass exections hardly amounts to a bit of stress? In ep 4 we saw them as they were before - and that's what happens between people? Sounds like youre not really enjoying it? lots of us are - (Phil!)

Celticgrace, Joooos: Seconded...thirded, really I think...perhaps the characters will become a little like they were in S1 but folks change so sometimes they will be and sometimes they can't/won't be...its not feasible to be like those in S1 all the time..circumstances and peeps change and sometimes you have to change with them..its all part of literally being human..

I think Mitchell was under a lot of pressure - the vampire world was about to be uncovered, so Annie and George's troubles seemed a little less important.
You can't blame the guy, I mean who wouldn't be on breaking point if something like that happened?
(Not that it's ever going to... unless some vampires are hiding in a town near you..)
I just think his mind was on other things, and the team were right to bring that out.
Anyway..

(24) joooos - I am enjoying it, but not quite with the same undiluted love, and for different reasons than I enjoyed it before.

For example, I *like* shows about power plays and politics and ruthless men, so I thought the sequence in episode 3 where the chief constable has Balfour killed and then tells Mitchell that he should be grateful he's cleaned up his shit was absolutely amazing. I loved it! But I loved it for completely different reasons than I loved series 1.

Look, one of my favourite bits in the show is Annie's voiceover in episode one, when she says, "So. What have we got left to look forward to, us refugees, the flotsam and jetsam of death? Maybe, if we still deserve such a thing as mercy, we find each other."

I thought that was very powerful. The show in a nutshell. But now it seems like they've lost each other. You may argue that friendships fall apart all the time in real life, and I won't dispute that, but you can't blame me for liking the show less if it chooses to go in that direction.

The meeting our trio had in episode 5 after George tried to punch Mitchell underscored how many things this season have simply been rushed past for the sake of plot advancement instead of being properly addressed. When George began with, "and did I mention I've been getting a little bit angry lately?" I thought with relief that at LAST they were going to discuss the way he has been behaving since he killed Herrick. It turned out he was only referring to his outbursts since the last full moon, like the last several months hadn't even happened.

I like the ways the plot has been developing in series 2, but I find that I don't feel the same attachment to and affection for the characters anymore. Frankly, the unrelenting doom and gloom that's being piled on is getting to me. Like I said in one of my previous comments, the characters used to strive for normality inspite of all the circumstances arrayed against them. They had an admirable, if naive, optimism which the writers now seem determined to shatter to pieces. I can only see the show getting darker and darker from here, and at some point I may stop watching entirely. I didn't sign up for a tragedy.

I wouldn't agree that the characters' relationships have broken down. They admitted they had "lost sight of eachother" before the house meeting in episode 3 which means at least the writers have deliberatley set up the story of them all being distracted by their own separate threats.

But we have seen some great moments of solidarity, closeness and friendship. Like Mitchell being a good friend and telling George how it is and how he had to move on, or them both looking out for Annie when Sykes turns up out of the blue.

There are also little moments like George and Annie putting an arm around as they walk away from Kirsty or Annie waking a depressed George "Ooh its a light!" Or them watchign a sleeping werewolf together and beign so happy for George because of what it must mean to him to have silenced the beast (if only temporarily as he would later find out)

I agree with what Phil said the tone is staying true to the journey of the characters. Death is chasing Annie, George faces the guilt of killing a man and making the love of his life a werewolf and Mitchell has to lead a group of killers when a mistake could mean dozens of deaths. It can't really be laugh a minute, but it never was, the comedy is still there, you jsut need to look out for it a little.

Gonna take this opportunity to say yeah the tone of series 2 is darker but so is the experiences of the characters i'm sure balance and humor will be restore in due course when our guys remember they are stronger together and after all what could be worse than a vampire, a werewolf & a ghost? all 3 of them together ;-)

hey mbn - let's go for the undiluted love! you go back to the "flotsam and jetsam of death" - what a great line - but that's what they are exploring - only on a bigger scale - the whole "undead" thing is so fascinating - how do the 3/4 come to terms with what their undeadness/curse is throwing at them? they are different so need to confront those challenges differently - they cant do everything as a group?
I do agree that some of the action is crowding out the conversations/intimate character stuff - so it can be a bit rushed - I wold also have liked more development of George's reactions to killing plus Mitchell's reactions to ebing drawn into power - but it's hard to keep the momentum as well?

So go with the gloom? I think it's amazing that we understand and care so much about these characters - stay with them? and trust Toby etc?

PS - sorry cant resist - "naive optimism" missing? - George's new job? his lists? George's attempted taming of the werewolf? His openness to Sam?
Mitchell opening up to Lucy? he took quite a risk there with the 20 questions?
Annie less so in ep4 but - earlier - her job interview and reaching out to both Saul and Hugh?

I could go on with a long list! but I wont ... their characters are still there underneath the big events??

The characters SO do still care about each other, hence George's indignation at Mitchell's having lived with people before living with him, and Annie's irritation at George's moping and pining for Nina - real feelings, which probably run deeper than George currently realises.

Well I'm going to put my penny's worth in the mix. I miss their striving for a little bit of normality (I call it domestic bliss) but there are loads of things that are different in this series. The stress levels are a lot higher. George killing Herrick and not really coming to terms with it. Annie and the threat of the doors and Mitchell with the possibilty of an open bloodbath. It's difficult to see how they could relax.

I do know that if they come together, then they could deal with anything; George with his chair, Annie with her "throw the vamp against the wall" and Mitchell with his err sex appeal? The problem is that the threats are not as obvious. In series one it was from within and Herrick. There are hidden threats in this series. The obvious threats are bigger I think that each of the three are struggling to deal with things that are larger than the group.

There are times when I want to punch them but it's true to life. Everything the fellow bloggers have said. I would love to see the cups of tea, the biscuits, the snall bits of normality (and there have been moments) but from my viewpoint, I don't find it gloomy. The humour is darker (Loved the priest moaning to the soldier about "needing more light" and the "and chop off their head... oh that's it")

OK now my moan, I don't think you can enjoy this series on it's own though. It feels different, not "bad" different... Still well written but without series one, there'd be too many questions..

I'm not really sure if we can say how a new viewer would see the series, its surprising how much you can pick up but I don't think we can really say as viewers of both series. Are there any people on here who are new since series 2?

And with regards to striving for normality, I still think that is the one central aim of all the characters, George is trying to neutralise the wolf, Annie wants to be 'a normal girl kissing a normal boy' and Mitchell wants to turn all the vampires away from killing so he can finally have a quiet life. Its all about Being Human. They all want to be normal.

I think Mitchell will realise who 'His People' truly are at the end of this series - and they're not the Vampires. He's certainly going to regret not walking away when he had a chance.

I'm from the states and I have loved the show. But having said that I agree with MBN in his posts. What attracted me to the show was the friendship/relationships of it. What's happening now reminds me of what has happened to my other favorite show Supernatural. The first 2 seasons were all about the great relationship between the 2 main characters(brothers) Now it's all dark destiny and melodrama, it's lost a lot of it's appeal. Looking forward to Season 3 for BH and I hope many more to come.
