TOBY WHITHOUSE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS (PART 1)

Post categories:

Garret Keogh, Online Editor | 15:59 UK time, Tuesday, 8 February 2011

Annie, George, Mitchell and Nina in the attic

Toby Whithouse, the god-like Being Human creator is here with his first batch of answers to your fantastic questions. More coming tomorrow...

Ok, so I've chosen my questions. But I also thought I'd do a kind of blanket answer to some of the others. You see, about 75% of the questions were "Will blah blah happen?" My answer to that - to all the questions regarding Nina being pregnant, Herrick's return, the reappearance of this or that character, the Mitchell / Annie romance - is simply: WAIT AND SEE.

I dunno. You people. One minute you're all upset because of all the spoilers, then next you're asking me what's going to happen!

The fact is, a lot of the fans don't want to know what the future holds, so for their benefit, I'll keep quiet.

There were also questions about getting the show broadcast in the US at the same time as here, whether there's gonna be a series 4, and if so how many episodes it'll have. Basically we have no control over any of those things. We've been granted incredible freedom by the Ö÷²¥´óÐã in terms of the content of each series, but whether it comes back or not isn't up to us. Obviously I'd like it to keep running for as long as we've got interesting stories to tell!

Right. Questions...

AllieMunster wrote: What other supernatural creatures would you like to pop up in BH? We've had ghost, werewolves & Vamps and oh a zombie! Hmmmm. It's genuinely not a policy to just have those creatures. If we found a 'Being Human' spin on faeries or trolls or witches or giants or singing otters, we'd pop them in.

The question we'd have to ask ourselves is, can we do this in a way that doesn't compromise or contradict our own mythology? What's our angle on this creature? As you know, there's a zombie in ep 3. The reason we felt it was the right time to expand the universe in that direction is because we thought of the Being Human way of doing it. We'd never throw a new creature in just for the sake of it. It would have to be done in a way that's consistent with the tone and world of the show. So if we bring in a troll (I should point out that we currently have NO plans to bring in a troll), it'll be because we've worked out what a specifically Being Human troll would be.

joooos wrote: Will you consider giving yourself a little cameo in series 4? Or are you already in series 3?

Listen, I never shut up about being in the show. But Phil and Di Carling the casting director won't let me. So then I tell them that I can do what I want because technically I outrank them. The ensuing laughter can last for quite some time. To be fair, there are a few reasons why I couldn't and shouldn't be in it. Firstly I'd be taking a job from an actor who needs it more than I do. Also it would distract you all from the story. Instead of marveling at the majestic dialogue you'd suddenly shout at the TV "That's Toby! ... Or is it Chris de Burgh...?"

But mainly because the Being Human cast are so ridiculously good that I'd stick out like a sore thumb. And I'd probably look into the camera and wave or something.

FlyingMonkeys wrote: I'm a little confused at the ending of series 2
Why didn't Daisy use her blood to save Ivan and not Herrick? The way she and Ivan spoke about Mitchell and Herrick's relationship, I would've thought she didn't like him?

Oo, a nice question. But a difficult one to answer without giving away some plot for a coming episode... Oh, what the hell. Basically it was Cara who held the secret of resurrection - a secret, we discover, that was given to her by Herrick. Consequently she got to choose who she brought back to 'life'. Being reunited with Herrick would always be her prime objective.

tom asked what I thought of the US/Canada version.

I'm really happy about it. They haven't mistreated it in any way, though they've made it completely their own. They've taken bits from different episodes, moved storylines around and introduced new characters. For me, it's really exciting. I'm now watching Being Human as a fan. I don't know what's going to happen and that's really thrilling. I have to say, at first I was watching it through my fingers but once I realized that this was a show made with just as much love and thought as we made our version, it was actually a really enjoyable experience. The other thing is, inevitably they have to tell the stories differently because their seasons are so much longer. If they were going to slavishly adhere to the UK version, they would run out halfway through the series.

ewan wrote: Are there more than one type of werewolf? - Not breeds as we have been told McNair and Tom are different breeds. Types or levels. George stated he had no trouble digesting raw meat from the night before even from his first transformation to Tully who stated that he threw up the first few times. In the CenSSA Lab Lloyd notes that Nina's results were different to the other werewolves.
Or is the answer something we should Debate?

Hmmm, it's an interesting thought... Though I think what Lloyd meant was, that her physiology is different to the other werewolves, just as mine is different to yours. He meant her blood type, blood pressure, height and weight, etc had to be factored into the calculations when determining what pressure to 'set' the chamber to. Regarding the raw meat, yeah, in ep 2 series 1, George couldn't stomach raw meet. But by ep 1 series 2, his digestive system had changed so that he could.

  • Comment number 3.

Thanks for such great detailed answers to these questions Toby..still think you'd be great in a cameo role...especially if you'd kept your checked shirt...and teamed up with that other sexy checked shirt man Barry Pilling...and mmmm oh yes, that other sexy checked shirt man Aidan Turner

  • Comment number 4.

    oooo look on the picture

    hand under bed,
    blood on bed,
    guts on books,
    chicken on string,
    first aid box,

    And some other stuff.

  • Comment number 5.

Is that a train set?? All little things that connects to BH.

  • Comment number 6.

Yay! Thankyou to Barry for picking my question for Toby to answer! And thankyou Toby for answering. Although I agree with Dorina (as I always do!) in thinking you'd have been great with your checked shirt alongside Barry and Aidan....as Type 5s (Type 5s are Sex Gods, by the way!)
Thanks again...looking forward to more answers tomorrow.
    xx

  • Comment number 7.

Thank you greatly for the answers Toby! Can't wait to see some more tomorrow.

Also glad you're not going to spoil us too much either, it takes a lot of the fun out of rocking on the edge of my chair and tearing my nails to shreds each Sunday night ^_^

  • Comment number 8.

Agree with Dorina! A cameo is called for - you could be one of the afterlife people who talk through the telly, it would literally be "word of God" for the show! =D

The Cara answer is interesting, especially as am wondering if we are moving towards a big reunion with her as well as Herrick in the show ... she seems more influential than she did last season. (Rewatched episode 1 recently & remember how we first meet her in the canteen!)

Also just wanted to say thanks to the Blog team & to Toby Whithouse & co - apart from being a fantastic series itself, "Being Human" really stands out for how much effort & engagement you guys put in for the fans, like these Q&As and much more. =) The attention to detail really is amazing. =)

  • Comment number 9.

    Hi everyone

  • Comment number 11.

    The hand Saffz

    LOL :o)

  • Comment number 12.

Mr. Pilling, are we going to get a list of music used in each episode? I don't know whether it's already been published somewhere....but I'd really like to know what the tracks are, so I can buy the ones I don't already have.
    Thankyou xx

  • Comment number 13.

Righttt i thought u ment the episode,

Does everyone remember what Mitchell says in Series 1 Episode 2
"If i had inteneted to kiss u i would have put on some chapstick first"

    Well he didnt.

  • Comment number 14.

I was just wondering is there any thoughts aout doing a film? I would so love that and would definately que for days if it came to it.

I would be the happiest bunny ever!

  • Comment number 15.

Two years in a row and I get answered colour me chuffed

Well it looks like the werewolf debate will go on despite in series 1 episode 1 he did say he'd had no problems digesting the meat it might just mean that his wolf was unsuccessful.

The whole Werewolf life span question is one I'd like to know it must be answered in an episode yet to come

  • Comment number 16.

@saffs i know! what a photo!!! and also... Annie's legs are worryingly feint... what a picture though! at least they're all there and look relatively ok... hmm very excited to see what's in store!

and Toby those are some great answers & also some great questions as well... far better than mine anyway! van't wait for part 2!

Maybe Mr Whithouse or Mr Pilling could do a blog full of questions of past BH series!! :o))) LOL

  • Comment number 20.

12 - This site is usually quite good in terms of listing the non-original music used in each episode

they're only up to 'Lia' at the moment though

  • Comment number 21.

Aha, knew I'd seen music lists somewhere

    For joooos again, /programmes/b00y3756

If you click forward or back to each episode, just above the episode credits there should be a listing of music used in each episode

  • Comment number 22.

Hand under the bed - somethinhg sasha left behind?

Binocs in window - for spying on the neighbours?
stRange looking chess pieces? ....any ideas anyone
Push along doggy toy that changes into a wolf to protect the baby/child
Whats that on top of the books?
Would love the get a close up of the olde photo

  • Comment number 23.

thanks for answering the questions! Im sure you would be great in a cameo! (pretty please can you do one?) I love the stuff in the photo! I showed the photo to my friend who doesn't watch being human (what is wrong with her?!) She was all confused about why there was guts on the books and a train set on the floor, her expression was halarious! Im gonna go show this post to her :)

  • Comment number 24.

    WOOOOOOOOOO THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Lord Toby answered my question, i never get picked for anything! Im glad there wont be a BH Troll haha

Great details in the answers & cool questions, thanks again for taking the time to answer questions from fans =D You have made me one happy fan!

  • Comment number 25.

This is 79sars79's "friend". For your info there is NOTHING wrong with me. AT ALL!!!! I just chose to watch other cool shows in my rare free time. Example: Doctor Who

  • Comment number 26.

25 - Its ok to watch other shows Doctor Who is another great one,

But BH will AWAYS be my fave.

  • Comment number 27.

Also, I kinda like that BH is sticking to the 'basic'(And BEST) supernatural creatures =) It doesnt bog the programme down or make it too compilated with folk lore, religion or mythology! 'Adding witches there, demons here', No thank you lol BH sticks to the main characters & what happens around them! Brilliant!! Just brilliant

  • Comment number 28.

Ill get her to like being human eventually, (sigh) all she needs to do is watch one little episode.....

  • Comment number 29.

    Only took me one episode,
I watched Series 1 Episode 1 at the end i thought WOW what happens next and watched all the series. And the piliot.

  • Comment number 30.

on the books i think guts of some sort the first unusual thing i saw was the hand the first aid kit and then i see the train i think OMG will they all find out about the box tunnel 20
oh john mitchell dont die go away mc'nair and tom no one wants you to kill mitchell :P blurrrrg

  • Comment number 31.

Hmmmm on the fidge it says wolf shaped bullet was that the gatekeepers or McNair and Tom?

  • Comment number 32.

The chess set is actually a set of ninepins - different game. Like the expression, knocking them down like ninepins, which I hope *won't* happen at the end of the series. Was wondering if the stuff the gory thing was sitting on was a stack of 12" records rather than books (they came before CDs, for the young amongst you ;-) ) And to the right of the chicken, on top of what looks like books - is that a pair of flying goggles? Can't quite make it out.

  • Comment number 33.

And under/next to the train set, that's the train timetable that Mitchell found in Graham's locker, isn't it?

  • Comment number 34.

    33 - Thats what i thought

  • Comment number 35.

    32. well done whitehare ( i remember LPs & 45 singles arrrr!!)
    - nine pins; will the 4 become 9?
    - flying goggLes; wasn't the ghost called Sykes an airman/raf pilot?
    - is the dog for the baby? or mor of a wolf thing
    - whos hand is under the bed (toms being pervy?)

  • Comment number 36.

I think the gory thing on top of the records may be a heart, but im not an expert on human biology.

If it is a heart could it maybe a symbol of the relationship between Annie and Mitchel and it ending badly? I hope not.

  • Comment number 37.

"I only got up for a pee"

  • Comment number 38.

Thankyou Zoya, I'll have a look now. I remember they did it last year.
I hope I don't end up spending a fortune on iTunes!

  • Comment number 39.

Yes, I think Sykes was a RAF chap. Hmmm I wonder if he will put in another appearance?

And I do wish the people who made Outcasts hadn't called their chap last night Mitchell. That and having Amy Manson/Daisy in it meant that every time someone said Mitchell I expected AT to come on screen. ;-)

  • Comment number 40.

36 - Yup, pretty sure it's a heart as well, you can see the...right, well, this is where my biology hinders me but vena cava/arteries/veins/aorta...one of those *snort* but aye, it does strike me as a heart

  • Comment number 41.

39 - You think that's bad? Every time I get on a train and pass by Bristol or Barry I keep expecting to see him *snort* ...I say expecting, hoping would be a better word

  • Comment number 42.

LOL. Every time I visit Middle Earth I keep expecting to see him. Oh yeah, I don't visit Middle Earth. *sighs* I'll get me coat.

  • Comment number 43.

42- *snort* if I can hope for vampire attack on a trip to Swindon, you can visit Middle Earth *grin*

  • Comment number 44.

So Ninas mum used to hit her, Is that how she got her scars or was that someone else?

  • Comment number 45.

Looks like what we called ninepins, everyone else calls table skittles. OK, I'm taking this too seriously now. Must stop trying to peer into the background of that picture!

  • Comment number 46.

Haha, ditto WhiteHare. I can almost see the art/promo people putting a load of random objects in the background that we can only just see, just so they can watch us obsess over what they might be *grin*

Though I don't doubt they're important, or at least connected to the characters/episodes, I am starting to go cross-eyed *snort*

  • Comment number 47.

    39. Hehe me too! was very disconcerting hearing her say "Mitchell" over and over again, especially as she's still got quite a Daisy-ish look to her (as opposed to her in "Desperate Romantics", again with dear AT)!

Re: the gory heart on the stack of records ... was also wondering if it was due to the Annie/Mitchell denouement, or to the zombies having their entrails torn out like in the videocamera on ep3 ... or even (arg!) possibly the way Mitchell is going to die in the end??

  • Comment number 48.

    I hope not

  • Comment number 49.

Hmmm Herricks hand under the bed me reckons. But not sure about the binoculars at the window.

  • Comment number 50.

44 from Series 2 I think it was someone else.

  • Comment number 51.

    48. Me neither!! =( It doesn't seem easy to come back from!

  • Comment number 52.

44 - The general idea I had is that her treatment by her mother and her self image meant she went into abusive relationships hence the burn.
All she said is that her mother used to hit her nothing about burning her.

  • Comment number 53.

i maybe reading to much into this, but the picture in the back look a bit like a western shooting scene, and can anyone identify the REALLY blurry object on the head of the bed? its really bothering me, i zoomed in 400x and i still can't tell!

  • Comment number 54.

I just would like to share my epic success story: I told my friend that i would only bring in a program she wanted to read if she youtubed being human and watched the first clip that came up, (my friend who "borrowed" my blog account earlier) And she thought it looked cool and now she is gonna go watch the first episode!

  • Comment number 55.

    13. Lol @ Saffz. I thought of that too, but maybe he did it outside. Or we'll see him apply some before they get down and dirty (if they actually can).

    15. I think Mcnair's "You can't even outlive me," is referring to the fact that Mitchell is undead, so in effect already dead and no actual living whatsoever going on.

Yay, Lord Toby! I didn't ask any questions, because things I wanted to know had been asked already. And I'm glad they're being answered! That Ivan thing was really bugging me...

  • Comment number 56.

55 - I was referring to a question on the ask Toby how werewolves age. Whether they 'slow' the changes making it take longer for them to age or even stop, or age as we humans do. or even speed up.

I was thinking that if we see a McNair flashback we might see whether he aged over a period of time or was younger and if that is the case it would explain the answer for us.

  • Comment number 57.

22 - Lycan666 - "Push along doggy toy that changes into a wolf to protect the baby/child"

I think you might have stumbled across something important there L. Ever heard the Welsh legend of Gelert? Or how the village of Bedgelert got it's name? I wonder if Lord Toby might be going to borrow the idea and replace Gelert with a Werewolf to give one of the characters a tragic and underserved death?

If I'm wrong. Please just accept that I have "issues" and that being "special" isn't always a good thing :-)

    ****

In Wales, long ago, when the trees were still young, in a palace of stone on the banks of the Conwy, lived Llywelyn ap Iorwerth - Llywelyn Fawr - Llywelyn the Great - Lord of Snowdon, and his wife - Joan - daughter of the King of all England.

When Princess Joan first came from England she brought Prince Llywelyn a royal gift from King John as part of her dowry - a magnificent wolf-hound - with legs long and limber, back sturdy yet supple, and the strength of all Ireland in its large Irish paws. A dog which terrorised the wild wolves for miles around and gently teased the stately palace cat. Llywelyn and the hound Gelert became inseparable companions.

Prince Llywelyn, his retinue and his pack of wolf-hounds often stayed at a hunting lodge in the mountains, and in the autumn they would hunt deer amongst the steep wooded valleys. One day when Llywelyn was out hunting his faithful hound Gelert went missing, and Llywelyn returned to the lodge alone.

He found Gelert there: limping, panting; his jaws dripping, drooling; his black coat clotted and matted with blood. And in the far corner of the room the cradle of Llywelyn's baby son was overturned and empty; the baby's fur coverings shredded and torn; the worn flagstones smeared with fresh blood.

Prince Llywelyn stood tall and grim. He withdrew his sword from its scabbard and held the sword high and his eyes tightly closed. The blade flashed down, plunging deeply into the treacherous hound who had killed his small boy.

But Gelert's dying cry was answered by the cry of a child. Llywelyn searched and found his son, alive and unharmed, hidden by the cradle. At the side, slain by Gelert in a fierce struggle to protect the baby, slumped the body of a mighty wolf, its shaggy throat ripped and yawning with the blackest of blood.

The sad prince buried Gelert with honour in a meadow by the River Glaslyn not far from the lodge. He erected two large stones, one at the dog's head and one at its feet, to mark the grave. Then Llywelyn built a church close by, dedicated to St Mary, as an offering to god for the saving of his son.

But the village which grew up around the church took its name from the grave of Gelert - Bedd Gelert in Welsh - and in the long years after Gelert's death Prince Llywelyn, it is said, never smiled again.

  • Comment number 58.

    Morning All,

Thank you for your answers, Mr Whithouse. Bring on the singing otters, I say.

    That's some story, Deathrattle [57].

Saffz [18], have you googled 'Being Human quiz'? There were some out there, I'm sure.

I've listened to many interviews with the delightful duo Sinead and Lenora but if Lenora had a fiver for every time she's called Leonora, Leona, Lorna, why, she'd have enough to open a teashop.

  • Comment number 59.

Dear Mr W - can I vote for the singing otters as well :-)

Ah - but what would they sing? What song would be suitable for a singing otter?

  • Comment number 60.

i whould love to me a vampire any day

  • Comment number 61.

I just noticed something that might give quite a lot of people hope.

The title of this blog is Toby Whithouse answers your questions (PART 1)

That's right part 1 meaning if you were unlucky this blog. part two?

Still I got answered but for the rest of you good luck

  • Comment number 62.

I noticed that straight away ewan! I will understand if he doesn't get to my question though. In my mind he's really busy talking to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã and Aidan Turner people about series 4.

    A girl can dream

  • Comment number 63.

Well this is the reply I got from BHP

There are more answers by Toby on their way... One set today and one set tomorrow. Still lots of being human info on the horizon.

Not one more but 2 which questions will they be? and the answers oh yes the answers.

  • Comment number 64.

Toby, you should have a "Stan Lee style" cameo. Just pass Mitchell in the street or be on the background in the hospital.

    It would be great!

  • Comment number 65.

Have you all seen the character list on the "Next on TV" part of the site. Poss spoiler but then again I am probably way behind on the news and there is probably clips, blogs and interviews re who is on the next ep (if there is let me know!)

  • Comment number 66.

i saw a character named sadie in that list mentioned by webshop, has she appeared before??

  • Comment number 67.

    66. I am not sure if she has, but looked on the net and it says she has done a nokia phone advert and on locate tv is says she has been in "The Bench" and "The Story of Tracey Beaker", can't say I have seen these. And then again there quite pos is another Michelle Luther!!

Onr more thing I think we are due another clip please BHP

  • Comment number 68.

have seen the first 2 episodes of he us version.
not really that keen on it but as toby said they have made their own i just don't think the magic we have have with the original cast is there. i also got the feeling that when creating the us version they had watched and studied the original pilot as their mitchell reminded more of the the first actor to do him.
in saying that i dugg there herrick

  • Comment number 69.

    He answered my question!!
    -Explodes with happiness-
    That has made my day!
The other questions and answers were great too! :D

  • Comment number 70.

a bit confused about the first aid box in the pic, i mean if you get got by Mitchell (oh yes please) or Nina and George I don't think a wipe and plaster are really going to aid recovery much. Oh and a big thanks to Lord Toby of Whitehouse for answering the questions.

  • Comment number 71.

i think first aid box indicates they work in the hospital

  • Comment number 72.

    64. That was a Hitchcock cameo before it was a Stan Lee one. ;)

  • Comment number 73.

Not sure if this has already had a mention but Richard Wells (BH composer) has a Being Human soundtrack CD coming out on 7th March.

  • Comment number 74.

saffz 4) Haha I noticed those as well, there is also a train on the floor could that have something to do with what Mitchell did? I love Being Human and I hope there are going to be loads more seasons! Mitchell's my favourite character! :)
