TOBY WHITHOUSE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS (PART 1)
Toby Whithouse, the god-like Being Human creator is here with his first batch of answers to your fantastic questions. More coming tomorrow...
Ok, so I've chosen my questions. But I also thought I'd do a kind of blanket answer to some of the others. You see, about 75% of the questions were "Will blah blah happen?" My answer to that - to all the questions regarding Nina being pregnant, Herrick's return, the reappearance of this or that character, the Mitchell / Annie romance - is simply: WAIT AND SEE.
I dunno. You people. One minute you're all upset because of all the spoilers, then next you're asking me what's going to happen!
The fact is, a lot of the fans don't want to know what the future holds, so for their benefit, I'll keep quiet.
There were also questions about getting the show broadcast in the US at the same time as here, whether there's gonna be a series 4, and if so how many episodes it'll have. Basically we have no control over any of those things. We've been granted incredible freedom by the Ö÷²¥´óÐã in terms of the content of each series, but whether it comes back or not isn't up to us. Obviously I'd like it to keep running for as long as we've got interesting stories to tell!
Right. Questions...
The question we'd have to ask ourselves is, can we do this in a way that doesn't compromise or contradict our own mythology? What's our angle on this creature? As you know, there's a zombie in ep 3. The reason we felt it was the right time to expand the universe in that direction is because we thought of the Being Human way of doing it. We'd never throw a new creature in just for the sake of it. It would have to be done in a way that's consistent with the tone and world of the show. So if we bring in a troll (I should point out that we currently have NO plans to bring in a troll), it'll be because we've worked out what a specifically Being Human troll would be.
joooos wrote: Will you consider giving yourself a little cameo in series 4? Or are you already in series 3?
Listen, I never shut up about being in the show. But Phil and Di Carling the casting director won't let me. So then I tell them that I can do what I want because technically I outrank them. The ensuing laughter can last for quite some time. To be fair, there are a few reasons why I couldn't and shouldn't be in it. Firstly I'd be taking a job from an actor who needs it more than I do. Also it would distract you all from the story. Instead of marveling at the majestic dialogue you'd suddenly shout at the TV "That's Toby! ... Or is it Chris de Burgh...?"
But mainly because the Being Human cast are so ridiculously good that I'd stick out like a sore thumb. And I'd probably look into the camera and wave or something.
FlyingMonkeys wrote: I'm a little confused at the ending of series 2
Why didn't Daisy use her blood to save Ivan and not Herrick? The way she and Ivan spoke about Mitchell and Herrick's relationship, I would've thought she didn't like him?
Oo, a nice question. But a difficult one to answer without giving away some plot for a coming episode... Oh, what the hell. Basically it was Cara who held the secret of resurrection - a secret, we discover, that was given to her by Herrick. Consequently she got to choose who she brought back to 'life'. Being reunited with Herrick would always be her prime objective.
tom asked what I thought of the US/Canada version.
I'm really happy about it. They haven't mistreated it in any way, though they've made it completely their own. They've taken bits from different episodes, moved storylines around and introduced new characters. For me, it's really exciting. I'm now watching Being Human as a fan. I don't know what's going to happen and that's really thrilling. I have to say, at first I was watching it through my fingers but once I realized that this was a show made with just as much love and thought as we made our version, it was actually a really enjoyable experience. The other thing is, inevitably they have to tell the stories differently because their seasons are so much longer. If they were going to slavishly adhere to the UK version, they would run out halfway through the series.
ewan wrote: Are there more than one type of werewolf? - Not breeds as we have been told McNair and Tom are different breeds. Types or levels. George stated he had no trouble digesting raw meat from the night before even from his first transformation to Tully who stated that he threw up the first few times. In the CenSSA Lab Lloyd notes that Nina's results were different to the other werewolves.
Or is the answer something we should Debate?
Hmmm, it's an interesting thought... Though I think what Lloyd meant was, that her physiology is different to the other werewolves, just as mine is different to yours. He meant her blood type, blood pressure, height and weight, etc had to be factored into the calculations when determining what pressure to 'set' the chamber to. Regarding the raw meat, yeah, in ep 2 series 1, George couldn't stomach raw meet. But by ep 1 series 2, his digestive system had changed so that he could.

The Cara answer is interesting, especially as am wondering if we are moving towards a big reunion with her as well as Herrick in the show ... she seems more influential than she did last season. (Rewatched episode 1 recently & remember how we first meet her in the canteen!)
Also just wanted to say thanks to the Blog team & to Toby Whithouse & co - apart from being a fantastic series itself, "Being Human" really stands out for how much effort & engagement you guys put in for the fans, like these Q&As and much more. =) The attention to detail really is amazing. =)

I think you might have stumbled across something important there L. Ever heard the Welsh legend of Gelert? Or how the village of Bedgelert got it's name? I wonder if Lord Toby might be going to borrow the idea and replace Gelert with a Werewolf to give one of the characters a tragic and underserved death?
If I'm wrong. Please just accept that I have "issues" and that being "special" isn't always a good thing :-)
****
In Wales, long ago, when the trees were still young, in a palace of stone on the banks of the Conwy, lived Llywelyn ap Iorwerth - Llywelyn Fawr - Llywelyn the Great - Lord of Snowdon, and his wife - Joan - daughter of the King of all England.
When Princess Joan first came from England she brought Prince Llywelyn a royal gift from King John as part of her dowry - a magnificent wolf-hound - with legs long and limber, back sturdy yet supple, and the strength of all Ireland in its large Irish paws. A dog which terrorised the wild wolves for miles around and gently teased the stately palace cat. Llywelyn and the hound Gelert became inseparable companions.
Prince Llywelyn, his retinue and his pack of wolf-hounds often stayed at a hunting lodge in the mountains, and in the autumn they would hunt deer amongst the steep wooded valleys. One day when Llywelyn was out hunting his faithful hound Gelert went missing, and Llywelyn returned to the lodge alone.
He found Gelert there: limping, panting; his jaws dripping, drooling; his black coat clotted and matted with blood. And in the far corner of the room the cradle of Llywelyn's baby son was overturned and empty; the baby's fur coverings shredded and torn; the worn flagstones smeared with fresh blood.
Prince Llywelyn stood tall and grim. He withdrew his sword from its scabbard and held the sword high and his eyes tightly closed. The blade flashed down, plunging deeply into the treacherous hound who had killed his small boy.
But Gelert's dying cry was answered by the cry of a child. Llywelyn searched and found his son, alive and unharmed, hidden by the cradle. At the side, slain by Gelert in a fierce struggle to protect the baby, slumped the body of a mighty wolf, its shaggy throat ripped and yawning with the blackest of blood.
The sad prince buried Gelert with honour in a meadow by the River Glaslyn not far from the lodge. He erected two large stones, one at the dog's head and one at its feet, to mark the grave. Then Llywelyn built a church close by, dedicated to St Mary, as an offering to god for the saving of his son.
But the village which grew up around the church took its name from the grave of Gelert - Bedd Gelert in Welsh - and in the long years after Gelert's death Prince Llywelyn, it is said, never smiled again.

not really that keen on it but as toby said they have made their own i just don't think the magic we have have with the original cast is there. i also got the feeling that when creating the us version they had watched and studied the original pilot as their mitchell reminded more of the the first actor to do him.
