The Return of Toby's Blog

Post categories:

Garret Keogh, Online Editor | 16:27 UK time, Thursday, 2 June 2011

Look at all of you! Blogging away like there's no tomorrow. The show isn't even on telly, and you're still there, keeping the faith.

I'm afraid I haven't been checking in as often as I'd like. I've been insanely busy putting together a shiny new series of Being Human for you. As I write this I'm about to head off to Cardiff for our first series 4 'Tone Meeting'. For those of you with proper jobs and proper lives, this is an bum-achingly long meeting with all the Heads of Department, the director (a triumphant return for Phil John - director of 'Type 3', 'The Longest Day' and 'Daddy Ghoul' last year), Phil Trethowan and Rob and Eleanor and me, where we go through the first three scripts (oh yes, there are SCRIPTS... in fact, I just delivered the first draft of episode SEVEN. Yes, SEVEN....) page by page, examining each scene and discussing all the technical problems we'll need to address. It's the first time we'll all be gathered together and it's a lot of fun. Apart from the bits that are boring. Or when we run out of biscuits.

And then, in less than two weeks, we've got the first readthrough! And if you think that's come around quickly, then you can imagine how I feel...

As ever it's been a joy making this series. Though it didn't feel like it a lot of the time. Each series gets harder to make as, hopefully, we set the bar higher and higher. But I think we've got another corker for you.

You know me well enough by know not to be surprised when I say there's nothing I can tell you about series 4, just my usual cryptic nuggets: There will be lots of new faces, an old face, a genuinely shocking death, a new villain, a sort-of new kind of supernatural (though that could change... we're very fickle...), a new writer and a journey to somewhere even we have never gone before.

Oh and thank you for all the Bafta good luck wishes. We genuinely didn't think we stood much of a chance. I can't think of a year where the competition has been stronger. And to have a third series of anything nominated is an honour in itself. Plus, I think Sherlock was a work of genius. Hand on heart, I was delighted for them.

Now then. I've got some homework for you:

A little while ago, one of you came up with a rather delicious idea. I believe it was blogger Ewan who suggested that we come up with titles for the episodes in series 1 & 2. Obviously it's too late to go back and put the titles on the actual episodes. Similarly we can't recall all the DVDs and so on and have the titles printed on or anything like that, so this really would just be a bit of fun to tide us over till the new series starts. But I'll choose the best title for each one and claim credit - I mean... uh... be grateful. Or something. Anyway, these would be the official-unofficial titles for each episode. If you see what I mean. Just a bit of fun.

For guidance, look at the series 3 titles - see how they either came from a line in the episode, a pun (usually supplied by script editor and pun addict the lovely Laura Cotton), or something more thematic.

To kick you off, I'll give you titles for the series. Yes, series titles. I've just invented the idea of series titles. Just run with me on this, Ok?

So, series 1 - There Goes The Neighbourhood

Series 2 - God Loves, Man Kills (a special bonus prize to whoever can tell me where I, uh, 'borrowed' that title from) (there isn't a prize)

Series 3 - (obviously) The Wolf Shaped Bullet.

There. That's your mission, should you choose to accept it. And if you don't then I'll look silly(er).

Thank you for keeping the blog going. It's really nice to know that you're all still out there somewhere. Keep chatting, keep being nice to each other, and I'll see you back here in a few weeks.

Toby x

    shiny new blog! Whooo hoo!

  • Comment number 2.

    Whooo hoo indeed!!

  • Comment number 3.

Season 4 is on the way. soon, very soon.

  • Comment number 4.

Wheeeee! New blog post from The Toby himself!

Old-school X-Men fans know how to live without prizes. We've survived Chris Claremont on a written-himself-into-a-corner tear more than once. (The ending of Inferno was the last straw, but I digress.)

Some of us remember (and cling to) the more specific definition of "graphic novel," and own the first printing of GLMK to prove it. ;->

That said, I have no suggestions for ep titles at the mo, but will try to check back and see what others are up to. (Too busy to hang out here much, alas. I miss my blog peeps!)

Love the cryptic! Keep it coming! :-D

  • Comment number 5.

Oh my - salutations to Lord Toby! A delicious new series to look forward to, as if we haven't been discussing the Series 4 since halfway through Series 3!!!

  • Comment number 6.

Wooo hooooo!!! Series 4 - Bring it on!

  • Comment number 7.

OMG! *THUD* Ewwwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnn! You are "only in it"!

    "Taxi!"

  • Comment number 8.

This is a mission for any blogger willing to accept it find the blog in question where I offered up suggestions.

Then post them but with alternate suggestions. Oh and if it's not revealed yet the reference seems to come from either the X-Men or a band called One King Down A Metal band

    Will keep looking

  • Comment number 9.

8 - Ewan, "God Loves, Man Kills" is the title of an X-Men graphic novel published in 1982. (It was also the primary basis for X2, but with Stryker adapted as a military figure rather than the televangelist of the original story.)

  • Comment number 10.

And just like that my heart flutters and my pulse races brothers and sisters of the blog we are back and our Lord has set us a challenge oh the joy x

  • Comment number 11.

What I want to know, this new blog being epic I realize, is, "So Long For Now" setting the record for the biggest, longest, bestest blog ever or not?

  • Comment number 12.

9 - Thanks for the information, might even get the Graphic Novel now.

  • Comment number 13.

What I would like to know is, realizing that his new blog is epic, is did "So Long For Now" get to be the biggest, longest, bestest blog ever or no?

  • Comment number 14.

a spanking new shiny blog to play in?!!!! Thanks BH team and LT!

LT you don't look the least bit silly to us!

Note if I missed any suggestions I am sorry and please add them to the lists.

  • Comment number 17.

9 - Ewan, grab it, definitely. Claremont at his writerly best, which is very good indeed, and illustrated in an understanted and very non-superhero-standard style that was a real eye-opener at the time. It was part of a series of high-quality standalones Marvel did with various characters in the early 80s, and easily the best remembered of the bunch, with good reason. It's a classic.

11 - AnnM, I'd say it's the biggest, longest and SCARIEST, for sure! :-D I tried to check in once or twice and just went O_O ...

  • Comment number 18.

New blog! Thank you for the message and X LT. All ready for Operation Cupcake!

  • Comment number 19.

I found a link with the xmen graphic novel on 1984 under God creates, man destroys not the same God love, man kills - xmen fighting racism and a priest in the kemp style reverend stryker - chrisclaremont and brent anderson in french "god creates, man destroys" and the translation google search engine in french confirmns the finding made by wiliqueen

  • Comment number 20.

Thanks for the new blogg LT!! Old face??? Could it be Adam, could it be a flashback of, dare I say it....Mitchell??

  • Comment number 21.

A sort of new supernatural. sort of there is something that will create talks of Hybrids or puppies or who knows what.

A genuine shocking death. because of who dies, who kills or gust because of how?

New faces - freinds foes or guest stars?

An old face - from Bristol or from the past. Mark / Sykes Alan Cortez and Robin?

A new villain We have already met Edgar so Who?

    A new writer Always fun

and a journey to somewhere even we have never gone before. Further back with flash backs? Further into Purgatory? if so add Gilbert to possible old face. Or somewhere else.

    So many thoughts.

  • Comment number 22.

Great a new blog. Buts it's a shame to leave the old one - soooo many posts!! Unbelievable. Haven't been around much but RL has really got in the way the past couple of weeks. I'm back now though. Have read back through old blog 'cos it would take all week - so I'm starting again from tonight. Nice to be back.

  • Comment number 23.

How lovely of Toby to sit in front of a shot of G and M, so we know M is being remembered.

  • Comment number 24.

I'll need to put my thinking cap on about names for the previous episodes.

  • Comment number 25.

Nothing from Topo and Ishbel yet. Ginger and Manc - are you there on the dark side?

  • Comment number 26.

23 - could just be an old photo they've used!

  • Comment number 27.

New writer SHOULD be WhiteHare or Rubyroussetired. or STX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Comment number 28.

26 - oh yes, I'd assumed it was - but just nice to see!

  • Comment number 29.

Just now from Ishbel by Twitter: Marcus thrilled and chuffed. Took delivery of cupcakes. Loved the card & all your messages. Photos to follow. x

  • Comment number 30.

interestingly we have in one hand a kemp like character in the other hand a military agency realm of fancy, but why not after all, BH blog scientific research team oblige- lets imagine a secret service agency like a MI7 or a MI13- naturally it would be MI13 agency dabbling in occult, mysterious cases where the cause or teh culprit is not "human2 or is "weird" yet long standing agency, first case was found on Bede , Ecclesiastical History of the English People- but this part has always been hidden to the public.

  • Comment number 31.

Woo, new blog! Loving some of the episode titles Ewan came up with, esp 'Bad Moon (a)Rising' for my fave ever episode. Will have to keep hopping back and forth between blogs so that I don't miss any of the cupcake news.

  • Comment number 32.

I plan to write to MR t Whithouse- yes- and will send him results of research and the preg wheel, i do not want to know the answer, but if I am right oh my oh my, because guys everything connects and falls into place from the beginning STX son said gobsmacked even!!!!

  • Comment number 33.

Squeeeeeeeeee! Thankyou Sir Lord Toby. Cannot believe it's almost time to start filming series 4. It seems like no time at all since the read through for series 3.
I think it's awesome that the last post generated over 10000 comments (although I think I only did about 3!)

Congratulations Ewan, on your recognition from Lord Toby and the BH production team. I think you should be rewarded with a tour of the set (take note Garret et al -& also take not that it was me (old blogger & mega BH fan), who suggested this! Lol)

Anyway, here's to ALL Being Human bloggers- no matter how long you've been blogging, how often you blog, & how long you've been a fan of the show. Cheers!

Any news on Ishbel & Topos meeting with Marcus, by the way???

  • Comment number 34.

30 - Saint, we already know TW is a fan of Ultraviolet, which centered on just such a super-secret government vampire-hunting agency (with a former priest in charge, yet!). Which doesn't preclude his going there, but needless to say it'd be with the patented BH twist. :-) And actually, Wyndham's machinations and all the other hints building on those "branches everywhere" that Mitchell kept telling us they had... kinda fits that bill already, doesn't it?

Huge UV fan myself, so I'm far from complaining. Wouldn't be the first thing I love that's gotten the BH twist treatment, and hopefully wouldn't be the last!

  • Comment number 35.

33 - thanks for the suggestion but I'm not the putting themselves out there type however if BH productions were to give the option to "One Lucky blogger." I wish you all luck.

  • Comment number 36.

Glad to hear from the man himself but, oh no, not another 'genuinely shocking death'. I've only just recovered from the last one. :0/ Eeek.

Still thinking about the sort of after all.

Hennessey and Alan Cortez were sort of supernatural as they could hear and sense Ghosts.

Molly and Lia's brother to a lesser extent (deleted scene) could sort of tell the future.

So sort of could refer to the level of supernaturalness (actual word was expecting spell check there) sort of supernatural but still mainly human.

No Sort of new type was the word choice. So hybridisation or the young Pup so much to think about.

Well done Topo and Ishbel and Littly. the box, the cupcakes and the card look absolutely fantastic. We're going to miss Marcus, his make-up wizardry and his vats of minty "blood". Thanks for reporting for the blog Gingernut and WhiteHare. It's much appreciated by those of us who aren't members of the twitterati!

Lovely to hear from His Emminence our Lord Toby. I can't believe how close they're getting to the start of filming. Now to ponder this task he's set us. This needs some careful thought...

  • Comment number 46.

ahhh new blog! And a challenge I can't think of. Brain is officially on holiday. I want to title everything "The Precious". That's because I am just watching Aragorn being crowned at the end of Return of the King. Prepping myself. It's research doncha know. Ahh Liv Tyler.

Focus Rose. Focus. Oh I can't do this! I have loaned my BH1+2 to a friend so can't go back over to check my thoughts. Ahhh hobbits. Little things. Nope it's no good... focus and brain function gone... =)

Magnificent job chaps - Sea_Otter and Gingernut in bringing Operation Cupcake to the blog. Love it when a plan comes together. Please and proud.

And what about this shiny new blog then?

  • Comment number 51.

only 10364 blogs to go to beat record! anyone?

  • Comment number 52.

48 - Good evening Kath! What do you mean? There is no reason for me not to be.

And wow! Ishbel and Topo - well done on the successful delivery of cupcakes to Marcus - brilliantness!!! I love it!!! Great photos. This cupcake trend will never end! I love the quirks of BH Bloggers. Best bloggers in the world. I feel like I should be permanently armed with cupcakes in case of a freak bumping into incident. How gutted would you be to meet a BH fame person and not have cupcakes to hand?!

  • Comment number 53.

prediction for new kind of supernatural ... either a witch/wizard or may possibly be called sorcerer/magician. Someone with magical abilities. Don't know though. Could be going into a place TW would rather avoid.
Alternative: an angel! Someone sent by the PTB to protect our remaining trio.
Other possibility: TW has listed Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell as one his favourite books (it's mine too) so perhaps he will introduce a fairy or a creature (like the Raven King) who is ostensibly human but from a different realm, outside the control of the PTB and with magical powers at his disposal. In many ways I prefer this idea to witch/wizard as it takes the traditional 'occult' side of 'magic' away and replaces it with something older, less explicable, more mysterious.

  • Comment number 54.

So your thinking we might get Elves?

  • Comment number 55.

Hi Ewan. You read Jonathan Strange?

  • Comment number 56.

A bit of it then lost the book, really should buy another one.

  • Comment number 57.

OK guys freaky incident today. I saw two vampires in close proximity. One side of the street is a lad about 12. Spit of Bernie. And he was no older than he was in BH1. Like it was filmed yesterday... or he was a real vampire... drive 1 mile further down the road and on opposite side of street is Adam's doppelganger. Now I know it wasn't really either of them, and vampires don't really exist (no, really, they don't!) but that was a bit amusing. I double-taked both times and can confirm that Warwickshire is the new Bristol. Rock.

  • Comment number 58.

I think, ultimately, there needs to be some creature introduced which is more powerful than Wyndham has been shown to be. That's pretty formidable! A fairy would definitely have that power. The only problem with fairies is that they tend not to be very interested in human problems, so humans having problems with vampires would not bother them. They would not just wade in and sort out the vampires. There has to be something in it for them ...
Well, you know how much fairies like babies ....?
And it may not just be Wyndham that is interested in a werebaby ...

  • Comment number 59.

You never know they could have Irish accents. Then how pleased would you be?

  • Comment number 60.

    59 - Oh God!

  • Comment number 61.

    Hello lord Toby....everyone!

Oh my,it's really amazing how quick time has flown since series 3 ended, and now..series 4 is well under way!

mmm,I am so curious as to what the 'genuinely shocking death' will be all about...abit worying this one..lol and the new kind of supernatural sounds exting, gee, that could be ANYTHING! The mind boggles! (which mine often does) lol

Thankyou very much L.Toby for the lovely blog post for us ...........Good Luck with the forthcoming series.have fun .love you all

For goodness sake. I go away for a day and what happens? We get a whole new blog and only set up by LT himself!!!

    Oh and here we go:

"There will be lots of new faces, an old face, a genuinely shocking death, a new villain, a sort-of new kind of supernatural (though that could change... we're very fickle...), a new writer and a journey to somewhere even we have never gone before."

So who will the genuinely shocking death be -Annie or George? To be geniunely shocking it has to be one of them, surely?

  • Comment number 67.

Hello peeps. For goodness sake I go away for a day and what happens? We only get a new blog - and started by LT himself *( we are nor worthy)*

Anyway - "There will be lots of new faces, an old face, a genuinely shocking death, a new villain, a sort-of new kind of supernatural (though that could change... we're very fickle...), a new writer and a journey to somewhere even we have never gone before."

OK who will be the genuinely shocking deaht? Surely can only be either George or Annie? What do you think?

  • Comment number 69.

Sasha mate - was missing you all day today. it was mad. I had to go to a Birthday bash and Operation Cupcake was on standby and waiting for Topo and Ishbel's first tweet. Next thing you know Ewan shows up shouting, "look at BH Facebook everyone" and there was an ad for the new blog post. Then Sir Garret sends out a tweet saying that the new blog was up, just as I was about to walk through the door! Poor Gingernut and Sea_Otter were on the old blog at the start of Operation Cupcake and then had to move blog - half way through it!

    I'm surprised we all survived!
Oh, and then there was Ewan - with the big mention....

  • Comment number 70.

I'm just taking the day off to do some RL, and what do I find when I come back?

  • Comment number 74.

Been out for a drink or two so feeling extremeley happy. Anyway, still looking forward to s4 but gonna miss AT.
However, looking forward to how they are going to take the show now he has gone. Obviously, big hole but hoping they will bring in new vampire. Premise of show is vampire, werewolf and ghost share flat. Taken this long to get over AT leaving, but finally come to conclusion need another vampire to make it right. Tried to leave comment over past couple of nights but my computer has, apparently, thrown a wobbly.
    Mancvamp - how are you?

  • Comment number 79.

OK. Look. "Shocking death" can mean one of two things. (Semantic scope)

    1. It could mean that the way that the person dies is shocking.

    OR

    2. it could mean that we are shocked as to the person that dies.

(Hiya Lozza mate. Lovely to see you. Missed you loads).

Well, Lord Toby is a man, isn't he? Sooo... I think he means option 1. He is pleased that he has written a really good death scene.

We girlies just think about the person that has copped for it. :D

you see that is my problem MancVamp. I always ALWAYs forget to look at it from the man's viewpoint! Right so what sort of shocking deaht does he have in store and for which character?

  • Comment number 87.

84- Well yes and no. If someone dies accidentally in a shocking way - then no.

But if we assume that the "shocking death" refers to someone - killing - someone else - then you are absolutely right. "Shocking" can scope over the agent (the person doing the killing) either in a shocking way or - as you say - we are shocked that this person did the killing.

Right really REALLy am off to bed now. Sleep well everyone - see you tomorrow!

And well done again Ewan for 'being in it'.

24 season 2 Keifer Sutherland telling his daughter to cold bloodedly shoot someone dead.

    1. His Daughter.
    2. The fact there is no other choice.

Make the scene shocking. So if someone you don't suspect had to kill someone face to face no choice about it.

After all think about Annie's reaction to what she did to Closet sorry Cooper. Shocked scared about herself.

A possible shocker, George or Nina when 'out running' attack someone and by morning when they wake up they see the wounds are too bad only one choice to save the poor soul further torment. Shocking.
Or George and Nina in the cage, knowing they are going to kill counting it down.

What About Annie in order to protect G & N from Vampires kills again in a sneak attack.

Who kills can be very shocking.

Then again the vampires could just have gone for Georges parents.

Listen. We've been put back on special measures again by the Mods. We are now being reactively-moderated! Oh dear...... We've gone too far.....

Sasha and Ewan - it is late and should both be in bed! LOL!

I think I'd like to have a think about that. When I saw Ruby's post - that was my thought too - maybe Nina - but I hope it is not Nina. I think Sinead loves the show. Wouldn't like to see her go at all. (Even though I still want Nina to ssssuffer just a little bit).

Letter to Garret Keogh and the Being Human Production Team

I just wanted to say that it has not gone unnoticed how very kind you were to us on the ‘So Long for Now’ blog.

You could have posted this blog post whenever you wanted – but you didn’t. You waited until we reached 10,000 comments and then helped Barry Pilling to post a message at our request. You even let Ewan get the 10,000 comment (grrrr) and then you let us beat the previous Ö÷²¥´óÐã Blog record of 10,084 set by the BcH Bloggers with the help of… Ewan. And you let us do all sorts of things that may possibly have got you into trouble as a result (hope not).

It was a very nice thing to do. It meant a lot. Thank you, Garret.

Ok. What with the wagon being gone + all I thought I'd plum the depths of addiction + see if I can do this from my mobile using a limp 1 bar of connection, no 3g, wifi, nuthin! If you're reading this it worked.

    Why?

I'm in bed + clearly the joy of the new blog has overwhelmed me because for the last 2hrs this blog, Toby's message, Russell, Sinead, Ewan, DrunkKath, WhiteHare + RubyRosettaRed have been all I can dream about. I even slapped Russell's bottom + found it to be passing good. Strange as I'd not rated it until then. The blog was a pub where regulars communicated by tweet + Kath was landlady. I had to sit outside pub because I couldn't think of any episode names, but that meant I overheard meeting between Toby, RT + SK in neighbouring beer garden. I need to purge dream though because I'm feeling disturbed by it all + can't sleep now.

    So this is me. Purging.

    Goodnight all. X
